My frustration with TRU and what they did about it...

When I started seriously investing in Legos my trips to TRU became more and more frequent and so did my anger and frustration with their pricing. TRU seems less like a toy store and more like and an airport gift shop. I mean does anyone there know what they charge EVERYWHERE OUTSIDE OF THEIR STORES???? With the internet so readily available and even the average consumers becoming ninja-like in their ability to find the cheapest prices how can a bunch of suits sit around in an office and think they can get away with marking up their prices sooooooooooooooo much???

If this wasnt the worst bit of it then comes the sales??? I ask what is the point of a sale when any and everything thats worth buying is significantly marked up before said sale??? This and the worst is a con and and its best is an outright lie.

Anyone here who's bought Legos for more than two months knows all too well what I'm speaking about. What I decided to do about it was write an email to their customer service. Heres what I sent:

This is an email concerning the general frustration I have with your store/website. I'm always getting survey request when I purchase things from the physical location so I hope the fact that I've taken time out to actually write up an email and send it is reason enough for somebody to take note and actually give me a written reply instead of a canned statement. Whatever the response I will be posting this letter and the reply to my various social media accounts.

Ok just so it's understood, I LOVE Toys R Us. I always have since the first time I went there as a 6 year old child. As a child all that mattered to me about your store was getting in, finding something I wanted, then completing a strategy to get my parents to purchase whatever it was that I found. Times were a lot simpler then. As an adult, however, more and more things about your store and its policies are making coming there to shop more and more frustrating. At this point I am making the trip to your store simply for the nostalgia as your policies and prices are bested by just about every other retailer out there that sells toys.

First lets talk pricing. Your in-store pricing is on average 5-20 dollars more expensive than the Target right across the street, the Walmart down on the corner, and 5-35 dollars more expensive than their corresponding websites. Now with the invention of the internet its hard for me to find a reason for this other than to milk parents who would do anything to quiet a screaming child. Is it to take advantage of individuals who aren't savvy enough to check pricing before they make purchases??? This is something I would expect of a theme park gift store where vacationing zombies think little of pricing but are more focused on relaxing. These ridiculous mark ups are particular to your store and has relegated me to purchasing things from you ONLY when there is a sale or promotion and only when that promotion beats the competitors, which is rarely the case because your prices are already 10% more on average. Which brings me to my next point.

Coupons, sales and other discounts. I recently called RewardsRus to find out why points that I had earned had not been transferred over to my account in the form of coupons, of which I had earned 20 dollars. I was told that on average it takes 4-6 weeks for points earned to be converted into coupons. 4-6 weeks??? How can ANY retailer say 4-6 weeks to a consumer and it be ok??? NOTHING I've ever had to do at a store has EVER had me waiting 4-6 weeks for results. Again, with EVERYTHING being computerized how can such an archaic policy even be in place???
Today I received an email stating 20-25% off a complete purchase from now until the 21st. "GREAT!!" I thought and hurried to your website to purchase the most expensive thing that I wanted which was a Lego Superstar Destroyer that retails for 399 (which is one of the few Lego items on your store website that sells for the same price it does everywhere else). After I had it loaded into the cart I tried to apply the coupon and found that it wasn't applicable to this item because it was a "HOT DEAL" item. I literally laughed when I saw that this item was a "HOT DEAL". "No it's not!! This is the same price it is EVERYWHERE ELSE!!!". This is as close to being an outright lie as I've ever seen. Then when I saw most of the other items I wanted were all HOT DEALS it basically makes this promotion absolutely useless for me.

I love being in your store. The look of happiness on childrens faces, the smell of all that plastic and your super friendly employees. It would be the place that I would want to purchase toys from for the rest of my toy purchasing days. However, your policies and pricing have pretty much squashed that possibility. Nostalgia isn't enough of a reason for me to pay a 10+% premium. Coupons that I cannot use are wasted paper and junk-mail. And rewards points that take 4-6 weeks to be able to use is just nonsense when most other points programs have almost immediate accessibility.
I shouldn't have to make reasons or find excuses to go to your stores. It should be the other way around. A department store that doesn't specialize in toys should be coming up with reasons to pull customers from you. Instead, all your competitors either at their stores or their online equivalent have the same products you do and are beating your prices without the need for coupon codes. And when they do have sales........it pretty much looks comical how over the mark your pricing is.

I have 100 dollars coming to me for your holiday promotion. After that coming to your store to shop will happen with nowhere near the regularity that it has in the past.

Here's to hoping someone who has the authority to make changes finds this email. Its been an awesome few decades, but the camel's back is beyond broken.

Toys R Us in my town has been surrounded by a Dave and Buster's and a community college.  When I pull in to the parking lot, Toys R Us has maybe 5 cars in the parking lot on any given Saturday.  The far end of their parking lot is filled with cars for the other two places I mentioned.  It is a sad experience going there.  Once inside, you see a dirty and wet room filled with rusted and dented shopping carts before you can enter the store.  Inside the store you have to pass through a 'dollar store' model of crap toys and gift wrap.  Then you have to go through their seasonal section (which is now costumes).  Only after going through these sad areas can you actually navigate through the aisles to the area you want to shop in.  Unfortunately, the Lego section is on a strange angle to the main aisles and it is not well lit and is usually pretty unorganized.

I don't have any fond memories of this store growing up.  I have better memories of Ben Franklins, KMarts, American Sales, and KBToys.  Toys R Us has always seemed quite the paradox to me: a depressing store that sells toys.   I don't think I will ever bring my son in there.  Target seems to be the best 'toy store' for us.  The displays are clean and interesting and interactive.  The store itself is clean and organized. The layout is welcoming and easy to navigate.  Even with pricing aside, I think Toys R Us is a dinosaur that has gone too far past their ability to change into something good.

Nive letter, I see that took some effort but I also think you probably should've been a bit more appreciative of their response. Im not trying to be rude, but most business will still give you a BS response even with all of that but the person in this case actually took the time to address your concerns individually and even tried to relate to your analogies. Her grammar was a bit lacking for a sincere response letter, but I think "Shanice" actually put some effort into her letter, and I respect that even if TRU's policies won't change.

I did appreciate that someone took the time to write a response as I didnt even think that that was going to happen. The discount was great as well and being as I wasnt expecting either I actually felt that at least somebody, no matter how far down on the totem pole it was, listened to what I had to say and did something to assuage my frustration no matter how small it was. 30%.....cool, I'll take it. Did it change anything??? Of course it didnt and I didnt expect it to. I just wanted to vent is all and thought the response worth sharing. Who knew.....

I wholeheartedly agree though, that a business can charge whatever they want and that the only way to change that is by not shopping there. Which was what I decided to do all along...

If you were on last night around midnight or so you would have seen why TRU isn't gonna change. The 41999 which has been sold out for a while now and is being released in batches a few at a time was available last night for a few minutes on the TRU EBay store. The same people who despise TRU because of their business practices were the same people scooping this set up even at the ridiculously inflated price. We all know there are gonna be some people whining about how there order got canceled or how their box came totally crushed. The TRU ebay store has thousands and thousands of negative feedbacks but for some reason people still shop there. No offense was meant by any of the posts here, TRU rants just grow tiresome. My suggestion from experience is to just forget the store exists. My life is a lot better now that I have done that :)

LOL Agreed!!!

If they didn't have the Dynamic Duo Funhouse Escape set I doubt I would purchase there at all (*cough damn local $89.99 retail pricing cough*)

LOL Agreed!!!

Oh and I forgot to say Goooooo Sun devils!!! I lived in Tucson and was torn between staying there and going to UofA or moving up to Tempe and going to ASU, I chose ASU. Both schools are amazing. I can't believe I graduated, it was a 4.5 year party with a few hours of studying thrown in.

That's crazy. The whole reason I came back was to Arizona was to start a new career and the choice was between moving to the Phoenix/Tempe/Mesa area for ASU or coming back to Tucson and going to UofA. I chose Tucson as it was the last place I was stationed before I got out of the military so I know the place pretty well and it feels like home.

Yeah I actually really liked Tucson, I have many friends still there and one who owns a few restaraunts there. I go every year for the World Matchplay golf tournament they have in Marana.

"feels like home." I can relate; I grew up all over AZ. I lived in (in no particular order) Flagstaff, Casa Grande, Tucson, Sierra Vista (mostly). Mesquite and sage on the wind...can't get that smell anywhere else in the US. I'm east coast now, but will be in AZ for Thanksgiving.

Were you stationed at DM? Pima County Air Museum and the "Boneyard" are my two favorite places in that area (yes, I'm a plane nut).

LOL I was born on Ft Huachuca!! I was just there the Sunday before last for the 50% off sale at Kmart (steering it back to Lego). Great pick ups but the ABSOLUTE best was Nogales. I had and overflowing cart of stuff from there and its where I got my best pick ups. (Steering it back away) I was stationed at DM after moving here from New Jersey. At DM I worked as an IT guy, but before that I was.......wait for it.....an aircraft technician. LOL I worked on 141s and KC10 refuelers. If I'd have stayed as a tech I wouldve requested to work the A10s on DM but chose to change to a "sit down" job.

I complained to TRU after the Friends and Family "sale" 4 weeks ago and have not gotten a response. At least they answered you!

I am letting my money do the talking. All of their "exclusives" are also available at Lego.com. No reason to throw any $$ down the TRU pit.

I have good memories of my local TRU, like preordering Super Mario Bros. 3 in the late 80's as well as Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy games and then showing up when the store opened.

I like that bible quote at the end of your letter, their owner Bain Capital and the Romneys dig that kind of stuff.

There are deals to be had at Toys R Us, just shop smart.

50% bogo + price matching + cashier that doesn't care = tru deal

I don't shop at TRU that much because of the higher prices, but every now and then they do have a deal like this one:

http://slickdeals.net/f/6092718-lego-city-fire-plane-20-free-store-pickup

$20 for a $60 set ($70 TRU retail price)

I usually wait for deals like this to buy something there.  Sometimes I will use the BOGO50 offers to get some of the polybags that are hard to find at other stores, like the lawn mower:
