I am shipping an architecture set. Although it is quite heavy, the box is about 12 by 15 inches. I know that UPS seems to be cheaper on an oversize box , but how about where the box isn't huge, just heavy. any ideas which shipper is cheaper?  Who appears to be cheaper on heavy items. Thanx for any info

Generally speaking, if the box weighs more than 3-4 pounds and is not too large it is cheaper to go with UPS. USPS Priority shipping is reasonable when the package is 4lbs or less.

I agree, especially if you get any type of an EBay discount.  How do you get UPS as a shipping option for EBay shipping?  I signed up for UPS, but it's still not in my drop down list when I compare delivery services.

Fedex is the only way to go for large items.

I have yet to send a package over 4 pounds that costs less by Parcel Post than Fedex. Maybe it has to do with my location, but I really have never used USPS parcel.

What about a medium/large box (once used to ship a modular set) filled with 40 pounds of lego?

Maybe it's our different location. Also, my nearest fedex is a smartpost, and the nearest ups is a small strip-center shop. So maybe I pay a premium, too. But take for example the Technic Flatbed Truck. I've shipped 2, in the same size shipping box. Parcel to NE was $14.85. Fedex to SW was $21.

I don't think we'll ever deduce a shipping formula that's equal to everyone.

USPS Parcel Post is worthless unless you are:

 

shipping across country

shipping something between 13 ounces and 2 lbs or so.

 

Otherwise, Fedex will get it there for $10 pretty much everytime. in 3-4 days.

I just shipped an Anakin and Sebulba's Podracers via Fedex ground. Weight was 3.92 lbs, from TX to CA, cost me 14.61. Whatever you're doing to ship for $10, keep it up I guess.

USPS priority mail flat rate boxes would be my choice for this function.  Not sure if they have boxes of that size offhand.

No, unfortunately the large flat rate box is square. And it's $18 anyway.
