Well, I have a similar experience.

 

I bought Winter Village Cottage online 3 months ago, and I decided I want to return it.

 

I went up to the customer service and did the return, and the lady put a sticker on it, which looks like the clearance sticker.

 

So it caught my attention, and I saw it says online item and the new price is $50.06.

 

So I ask her why and can I rebuy it?

 

She told me it's online item so they sell on a discount.

 

So at the end I rebuy it and save 50%.

 

But not all store do that, 90% of the store I went to, they put all online item in a cart and not putting it out on the shelf.

Probably, but it's really YMMV thing.  There is no guarantee that the items will go back to the shelves.  You could be wasting your time doing all the work for nothing.
