Are fruitcakes running rampant on eBay lately? Selling, buying, listing, feedback, etc...

Featured Replies

Just got an offer for 30% of my asking price on a listing. Gee thanks.

Reasonable offer if your asking price is 43% over the current going rate for this item?

Update to this crazy story.  Of course the buyer never returned the item and never sent any documentation verifying they received their package with rat feces inside.  I called eBay

No - it was 30% of the total asking price, not 30% less. And my asking price is only about 10% above the going rate :)

I had a buyer send the obligatory "can you sell to me for $xx and I'll pay right away?" emails awhile back.  I ignored like I normally do and then they paid full price 2 days later.  Helped it was a relatively rare item on ebay but I chuckled nonetheless.

I had an offer on a JW Poly (G. Trap) for .50c less than I paid for it. Ignored it as I normally do and I received an email from the potential buyer telling me to accept the offer or she will leave negative feedback. :jester:

Needless to say, its not only Friends polys that I tossing at Kangaroos now.

I would have blocked her and told her good luck leaving that negative on a purchase she hasn't even made! I love selling on the Bay but every now and then, you just come across the craziest people

Haha its the crazies that get me up in the morning. I love listening to their inventive stories.

I can beat that, I got offered €30 on a €180 BIN price. Feck right off.

I hate getting offers when you've not listed it as 'make an offer'. Especially when they get sore about it when you politely refuse, and they try telling you what's they think it's worth.

Oh man, I would have trolled that poor soul mercilessly before giving the banhammer.

I have had some luck with ebayers if they are offering close to the price I will have them purchase from BC to save on my fees and they can usually get the price they are looking for.

How do you point them towards BC without violating eBay's guidelines about making deals outside of their site? Not trolling here - I really am curious how you might suggest to a potential buyer that the item is available elsewhere while using eBay's communication system. You can PM me if you prefer!

I'm not even covert about it.  If a buyer asks me for a slightly  lower price, I tell them that I can sell it elsewhere (BC in this case)  I have had emails cancelled from ebay due to putting an email address in it, so I know you can't do that anymore, but it seems redirecting them to Brick Classifieds has not been caught onto yet.  If they ban me, whatever, I'll move my stuff over to Amazon.  They might be losing 1 in 50 of my sales, it's a small percentage.

People are stupid.

There's a scammer putting up top end sets on auction with no feedback and people are still buying off him. Any time I spot them I report them, but still miss a load of them.

In the last day I've seen a Grand Carousel sell for over a grand, Death Star II for over €500 and an Imperial Flagship for €300, all with the same MO.

Each case the country of sale is a European country, but the location is Hungary and the seller always has 1 feedback as a buyer from a Chinese seller, not rocket science that it's a scammer.

Yup. This has been going on for awhile. Someone has previously reported the same thing. Those hackers are good though. It's a shame eBay can't figure this out on their own.

How do people do this without getting caught and tracked down? Can't the money be traced to a bank account or can't PayPal shut down the transfer before it completes?  I guess I'm too honest to know how to do shisety stuff like that.  Knowing my luck, I'd end up getting caught and would spend some time in the pen.

I haven't bought Lego on eBay until recently.  I bought a complete set of Series 12 CMFs and received them yesterday.  The seller said they could include the original blind bags if requested and I sent the request at the same time I complete the purchase.

When I received them yesterday all the plastic baggies and even the CMFs smelled like a pack of Marlboro - it was pretty bad - like your clothes smells after being in the casino the whole day.  If these were for displaying only I wouldn't care but my kids want to play with them. Also I did not receive my original S12 bling bags as requested.

Is it reasonable to expect that these would not smell of smoke when they were advertised as new?  I messaged the seller to see what he/she wanted to do but 24 hours later and no response.  Would the next step be to file a SNAD?  How long should I wait if he/she doesn't reply?

start a case.......eBay will send the seller a message. That usually gets them to respond.

Just air them out and leave neutral or negative feedback.

After all this time I think the real question should be... "When AREN'T the fruitcakes running rampant on ebay?"

And it seems like there is something in the water all the time.

A "mother" asked me if she could have my Friends Pet Salon for £5 rather than £15 as her daughter has broken her finger, doesn't have much pocket money and needs cheering up. Well, she should be careful where she sticks it then, shouldn't she? I didn't reply otherwise I'd have told her where to stick her offer. ID now blocked.

I have lost count of the amount of autistic children, house fire burnt everything, types of stories to get a cheaper price.

I always want to respond with "and if you don't pay the full asking price, my children won't eat."

Thank you, I didn't want to bring up the "Autistic child" excuse at the risk of offending someone, but every time it is always this excuse, If you don't want it, please let me know instead of me chasing you for a week and a half and getting a paper thin excuse.

Look I am more than happy to help out but some of the stuff that goes on borders on exploitation. I have donated Lego to the local Make A Wish organisation for their raffles and fund raisers, cost prices for some stuff and also shared deals with others but some people simply push it.

I often donate Lego to local schools. I really can't be bothered to sell small sets or polybags or so I just give them away or keep for Hallowe'en trick/treaters for example. I even gave away a 9515 Malevolence last week for a StarWars themed raffle prize at a school's SciFi evening. Not that I'd get anything for the 9515 on eBay anyway.
