My wife has a tackle box, into which she sorts every single piece accordingly. It certainly works well.

My strategy is different: start a good movie, grab a six-pack, break open bag #1 and just go.

I hate to move minifigures joints when I build and I wash my hands every 10 minutes or so. I once searched 30 minutes for a tan 1x6 plate(turned out LEGO switched it for a white 1x6 plate).
