Retiring Soon - open speculation

To continue an earlier thread, here are the sets listed on S@H as "Retiring Soon":

Friends - Stephanie's Cool Convertible, Olivia's Speedboat, Mia's Bedroom, Series 1 foil packs

Duplo - Train Starter Set, Doctor's Clinic, Emergency Helicopter

Creator - Apple Tree House

Lego Games - Ninjago, Pirate Plank

Chima Speedorz - CHI Battles, Ring of Fire, Target Practice, CHI Waterfall

Technic - Mini Container Truck

LOTR - Gandalf Arrives, Orc Forge

CMF - Series 9

Architecture - Sugnyemun

Marvel Super Heroes - Captain America's Avenging Cycle

Star Wars - Endor Rebel Trooper and Imperial Trooper Battle Pack, Planet Bespin & Twin Cloud Car, Planet Endor & AT-ST

Nothing earth-shattering.  Orc Forge surprises me the most.

  • I'm feeling generous and seems Cladner and Val-E are working to hard at this,  might as well simplify their jobs for the holidays.  Plus some of these need to disappear quicker... 10815

Sorry, you're wrong about there being a variation for the VW T1 Camper, where two different version were produced. In the case where you could select two different codes on LEGO Shop at Home it's because the VW T1 Camper not only got a simple box-redesign like Palace Cinema (same box format, different graphics with updated Expert Logo) but because the size of the box for the VW T1 Camper was also changed. That caused the resized & redesigned box to also get another item-code, hence the double item-code selection drop-down menu.

I had forgotten what the "redesign" for the VW Camper was, but according to this thread it was a couple of pieces on the front end of it. I was thinking that if TLG has to do a minor redesign like this, then they "retire" the set in-house before releasing the "redesigned" set (thus the reason for the two numbers on LEGO Shop at Home).

I can't think what they might redesign for PR, PC or PS... but who knows?

I could easily see Ewok Village being retired soon.  Here are some reasons.

First, Force Awakens sets are hitting.  It's a simple out with the old - in with the new.  They want shelf space for Reys Speeder etc. and Ewok Village is taking up that valuable brick and mortar shelf space.

Second, they have shown no reservations about retiring popular or iconic sets in the past.  The Star Destroyer was recently retired as well as the Ultimate Collectors X-Wing.

By the logic above, I see no good reason to NOT retire the Ewoks, put them to bed Lego, and let me make some money on these sets...

Dear (Deleted),

Thanks for getting in touch with us.

It's great to hear you like the LEGO® Red Five X-wing Starfighter™.

It’s a very popular set and we’ve had a lot more orders than we expected. We don’t have any in stock at the moment, and we’re working hard to make more.

Our warehouse does not have a date when we will have this set back into inventory. If it is a set that you would like to add to your collection. You may still find it at a retailer in your area. We just don't have a set date yet.

If you don't want to wait for this particular set, we have plenty of other great sets that might inspire the LEGO builders in your family.

To see all the LEGO toys that have available now, visit LEGO.com/shop.

We want to make sure we're doing a good job for you, so you’ll always find the link to a four-question survey in our emails. Please tell us how we did today:

Doesn't sound retired to me? Thoughts?

It had a retiring soon flag and is now sold out, this one is not making a comeback

If it's not retired then my mistake, I thought for sure I read somewhere that it was officially retired.

Also, it's listed as "retiring soon" on Lego Australia shop and I think also on the EU shop but for some reason i can't get to the website:

http://shop.lego.com/en-IT/Red-Five-X-wing-Starfighter-10240

Additionally, the Star Destroyer was retired as well right?  75055

If both of the above are retired and are just as iconic, if not more so than Ewok Village, then them retiring Ewok Village shouldn't shock anyone at all.  It's been out for a few years now and the new movie just hit.  It's time.

We already had this mail with SSD, HH, TH and many many more... they never came back.

Seems to be just a kind of auto-answer they will give you anytime you ask for a set not in stock/ sold out

emails from lego support agents means nothing. same as infos from the telephone agents. but... hell yeah... it could come back.

I'm confused about the Star Wars retirements. Aren't the Rebels boxes like only a year old? It seems like half of them are already gone. Am I wrong in my timeframe?

at-dp 75083 is marked as retired on eu sah for example, it was released in jan 15 if im not mistaken. also, the sets from the same wave seem to disappear here, dunno if just sold out and coming back or completly gone. i dont have any other info yet, but it seems youre right.

No your timeline is not wrong.  There was a mass exodus of non-exclusive sets in 2015, many earlier than expected.  A lot of these sets were marked as retired across Europe during the 4th quarter.  I don't think those red/orange sold out and call to check sets are coming back and expect them to be officially retired in the U.S. in the coming weeks/months.

That's weird. It seems like most of Star Wars is retired/retiring soon with just the Ep. VII stuff and a few others carrying forward? It seems like Walmarts are split on whether any of the Rebels boxes are carrying forward in their stores. I haven't run into any of the discounted Final Duels or Troop Transports, but I have seen one store with discounted Imperial Shuttles.

means out of stock, well get back with it

So right now after looking at the release / retirement chart that is on the first page of threads, you can see a direct correlation (mostly) between a new set being released and an old set being retired.  The question that I really have is, does the fact that the Pet Shop has been out for so long effect it's future resale value?  I mean, people have had an extra 2 years to purchase it over the Town Hall (town hall had a shelf life 2 years less is what I mean).

Also, with the Brick Bank releasing, it's almost a guarantee that SOMETHING Is being retired, and VERY soon.  The most likely candidate, again, is the Pet Shop.  But it's possible they could do a mass retiring although it wouldn't make a lot of sense.  Is it possible that they would retire the Parisian Restaurant BEFORE Pet Shop and Cinema???  Well, if Parisian gets retired, it will have lived 9 months less than Town Hall...seems like a very big longshot that it would be retired.  However, if it was, due to the short length of time available it would go up in value tremendously.

So we're left with 2 logical choices.  Cinema and Pet Shop.  I could see them both being retired at the same time.  Cinema if retired will have been out nearly the exact same length as Town Hall...something to think about.  But I question the desirability of Cinema.  Is it something people will pay top dollar for after it's retired, 2 years after?  I would have thought the Fire Brigade (Just under 4 year shelf life) would have been very very popular and it is selling at a premium but it is nothing too shocking at $400 US dollars and the Emporium (over 4 year shelf life) fetching just under $300.  Maybe the fact that IF Cinema is retired, it's relatively short life span could push prices sky high and well above what Pet Shop might be able to get on the resale market after retirement..

Something to think about...
