Retiring Soon - open speculation

To continue an earlier thread, here are the sets listed on S@H as "Retiring Soon":

Friends - Stephanie's Cool Convertible, Olivia's Speedboat, Mia's Bedroom, Series 1 foil packs

Duplo - Train Starter Set, Doctor's Clinic, Emergency Helicopter

Creator - Apple Tree House

Lego Games - Ninjago, Pirate Plank

Chima Speedorz - CHI Battles, Ring of Fire, Target Practice, CHI Waterfall

Technic - Mini Container Truck

LOTR - Gandalf Arrives, Orc Forge

CMF - Series 9

Architecture - Sugnyemun

Marvel Super Heroes - Captain America's Avenging Cycle

Star Wars - Endor Rebel Trooper and Imperial Trooper Battle Pack, Planet Bespin & Twin Cloud Car, Planet Endor & AT-ST

Nothing earth-shattering.  Orc Forge surprises me the most.

  • Here you go. Are likes important? ^^ Anyway, I find it interesting that the City Vulcan sets are also seem to be done. They are from last year, so they are not really that old. Did a pretty good

  • I'm feeling generous and seems Cladner and Val-E are working to hard at this,  might as well simplify their jobs for the holidays.  Plus some of these need to disappear quicker... 10815

  • Chris, I think you're coming in at a time where the LEGO reselling party is coming to an end. I'm not saying there is no more money to be made; what I'm saying is that the ship is full and the general

The 10227 B-Wing does appear to be a turkey at the moment like the 9515 Malevolence.  I'm hanging on to the B-Wing just in case it has more of a presence in episode VII rather than the damp squib in the originals.  The original Malevolence crashed into a moon so that'll not make another appearance unless we see another Subjugator Class ship appear again.

No turkey here dude...

I sold a 9515 for 180$ a while back and I'm holding on to the rest of them . Between TRU clearance and Lego's May 4th sale I have a healthy that I would love to unload at 250$ ish

This might be old news, but have you guys noticed the new items with the "retiring soon" tag at shop@home?

9493 X-Wing

75019 AT-TE

75018 Jek-14

41008 Heartlake Pool

75041 Vulture Droid

75039 V-Wing

75003 A-Wing

75022 Mandalorian Speeder

3185 Summer Riding Camp

And others. Several of these look interesting to me though.

With the update to the Lego LEGO Shop at Home, can someone speculate on why Lego would not include sets like GE, HH, TH, and SC in the retired product label when they are already sold out?

Being relatively new to the game, I cannot reason why Lego would not update those products with a "retiring soon" label if they didn't intend to produce more sets.

In the under-$100 range, I am "speculating" that Unexpected Gathering is going soon. GM Pirate noted in-store stock levels are evaporating, and since then I am noticing it as well. Of our six So. Cal. lego B&M's, only one has stock, though most TRU's still do.

Likely a one-and-only chance to own Bilbo's house, unless your name is Peter Jackson. All opinion, but I think it's time on this one.

A few of the TRUs in my area have a bunch of those in stock for full msrp. They have to clearance those out at some point right?

If I do see any Unexpected Gathering's on clearance I am jumping on them like a panther.  Hmmm....I guess panthers jump.  Although I think snow leopards have the longest jump span of any cat.  At least, I think they do.  Anyway, yeah, I like Unexpected Gathering to be a nice long-term investment.  It's the best LOTR/HOBBIT set, size not withstanding.

People on reddit are posting pics of their Walmarts clearing out Unexpected Gathering for ridiculous prices, like $8 and $15

which subreddit is that?

My walmarts were able to clear theirs at $49. None left in the area.

To the Walmart app!

Bummer...only one store in the San Diego area has it in stock, and it's $54.

MUCH cheaper than TRU @ 79! Have the TRU folks actually seen the Shire? Everyone is broke and it's all cottage industry. People cannot even afford shoes. Where is their humanity?

9 dollar????? Srsly?

We have to pay about 60,- dollar pfff

$9 for the unexpected gathering set is a steal.

Does Walmart make profit on them??

Walmart is the greediest company. They can lose money on 1 LEGO set and not even feel anything

Every Long Term Investor should have at least 5 or more Sea Cows for Investment, As people will be watching the Lego Movies on DVD for many years down the road. So its not that this Set will just vanish and everybody will just forget about it. Now there is plenty time to get this set, but starting next year it would not hurt to pick one up now and then. And don't forget about the Simpson House to, along with other Exclusives these 2 will do very good once retired. Ed

70810...Metalbeard's Sea Cow... Had to dig back in the thread for this one.  I've been thinking about this as a "surprise-retiring-soon" possibility. I'm just thinking, it's a big, expensive set.  Prominent in a popular movie, but... it's not Star Wars, or even Harry Potter... I mean, of course we all love it, but does the rest of the world even remember it?  I doubt more than 1000 kids around the world are asking for it for this Christmas.  Of course, it was only introduced in March 2014... could it fade away mid-to-late 2015? It would be interesting to know if the Sea Cow is going to reappear in Lego Movie 2, but the sequel is not slated until 2018.  Do you think it can really hang around that long?

It is a very unique set.  I think this set transcends the LEGO Movie regardless.  Large creative sets do very well in the secondary market.

"Retiring soon" is a marketing gimmick basically, probably to move out inventory of sets LEGO wants to get rid of. MOST sets retire without the retiring soon tag.

I was interested to see several of the brand spanking new Hero Factory Sets are already getting tags though.

The seacow is some sort of a steam punk boat, so it should do fine.

Achilles, I agree to a point.  However, I am wondering why LEGO would not update the retired tag to the large exclusive sets when they are updating the other sets.  I would not think it would take that much more effort, right?

I am curious because if I were an average consumer, and I was saving for the Town Hall, but I see it is in a SOLD OUT status, I may consider waiting to spend my money on a LEGO set until the set I want (TH in this case) returns to availability.  I don't think that mentality would be in LEGO's interest though - wouldn't it be better to label something like TH as RETIRED so that that average consumer realizes that the TH set is no longer available with the assumption that the average consumer would move on and spend money on a different modular like the Palace Cinema, which is available?

I must say that the sea cow is one of the most difficult sets for me when it comes to investing because it is sooo difficult to judge this set.

Yes it's a BIIIG one (and once build it must be quite impressive), it's an exclusive (somehow that doesn't seem to mean that much nowadays ^^) and it is related to The LEGO Movie (which is nice I guess).

The uniqueness of this set is a big plus but since it is so unique (no train no classic pirate ship no spaceship...) it's more of a gamble.

I wouldn't rely on the movies too much, since we're not talking about SW here. The target group of The LEGO Movie are children, so probably most AFOL won't just buy it (it might even be totally off the radar).

Also I don't figure that todays children will want to buy it that much 10 years later ^.^

So there are strong points in favor for this set as well as some against it. I'll probably try to stay on the "safer" side by investing into pretty much what everybody invests in... I also found a sea cow on discount so I bought one and if I ever happen to find another one on discount (AND have the money) I'll probably buy a second one but any more of them is out of the question for me.

(I'd say that quite some other investors have the same thoughts about this set, so if it actually will be a winner those who have some will be even more happy about it ;-) ).

As for the retiring soon:

I think PS will last some more time since the signs are gone and there have been a lot in my LEGO Store.

I was in a LEGO Store in Berlin (as I've already posted) where they've told me that TH and GE will be gone by end of this year.

They still did have some GE and even MORE TH.

Also I found a TH in another store (Galeria Kaufhof).

I guess it will stay sold out online and those rare findings really are the rest of them. (I called another shop close where I'm situated and they didn't have any GE left).

Also I guess that the DeLorean is pretty much done as well as An unexpected gathering (sold out in SAH Europe at least... this might be the other way around case).

Probably they have lots of them in the U.S. since the Movies are more popular there.
