Odd question... any tips for "free building"?

I would love to just sit down and build something like I did when I was a kid, but I find myself suffering from blank page syndrome. Even if I go in with a goal in mind, like building a robot or whatever, I just can't get started.

Along those lines, any suggestions on making a bin/box/whatever specifically for this sort of free building? I've got tons of Lego bricks, which I've tried to sort by color, but that compounds the difficulty of free building. I'm thinking it would be good to make a mixed box of parts that are explicitly unsorted.
