Building a Vertical Lift Roller Coaster - Tips?

I'm looking for guidance / lessons learned on building a vertical lift roller coaster like Mark & Boone did on Lego Masters.  Mark does mention it "waits three seconds and then..." so I assume some logic has to be in there?  I don't have Mindstorms or PoweredUp right now, but do have Power Functions and Qty 132 of the technic chain link... would Mindstorms or PoweredUp be required to accomplish the vertical lift?  If so, that might answer most of my questions.

If anyone has attempted this type of project and has any lessons learned I'd appreciate it!
