Yes they were good, with the plastic inserts to show off the special figures/parts. I remember this particularly from the space sets.

 

Today's boxes are just that, boxes. And they are too big. The Helm's Deep box could easily be a third smaller.

    If not half.  Not sure what is worse - to get smaller box (bigger means more attractive for kids, right?) or open that huge box and find it 3/4 empty.
