The release went so bad. They were not prepared for all those online orders.

Server timeouts.
Customer service number busy for hours.

Crazy morning but i did finally manage to get an order through. Called my LEGO store at 10:30 when i got free of work. Sold out there.

Its going to be an interesting couple of months on this one me thinks....

I'm actually very pleased that I couldn't buy one.  I tried multiple times, but I will just wait for Double VIP points or discounts form Amazon or some other retailer.  It wasn't like I was going to spend three weeks building the damn thing anyway.

I feel the same way. If it works out, then it does... and it could end up hanging around a long time like the death star... I'm just worried based on the Apollo V availability for example, or even how Nintendo has been failing when it comes to meeting demand, that this will turn into a long time hunt if we don't secure one soon... I hope I'm wrong about this. I'm not into this one to resell it, I'm a fan and want to build it. But like you mentioned, this one will take a while to build too so this set is all about patience...

I'm guessing he's also pretty disappointed that his store probably hasn't been hitting its sales numbers for the year either.

I think many LEGO store managers (especially in the US) will not be hitting its sales targets.

Yes this.  My stores employees encouraged me to purchase locally if at all possible to support the store.   I wondered if recent layoff news is creating internal anxiety (rightfully so).  Would love to buy in store but couldn't even tell me how many available the night before.  Today say next delivery is next Thursday and no clue if will get any.  How can you expect  anyone to purchase locally on that info?

The exclusive cards and numbers being put on the signed boxes surely mean Lego can track which of their VIP's are flipping them?

Completely random and can't be tied back to who bought it.  Even if they could track them, I doubt Lego would even be that bothered.

I just don't see this being a short production run with all the advertising and promotion of this set.  Throw in the fact there is a new Han Solo movie in a year from now, I see this set hanging around for awhile.

If they did make it a short production run, that would just re-energize the entire secondary market.  Then again, with slipping sales, The LEGO Group might be looking to re-energize the secondary market.  LOL.

exactly my thoughts mos.  lego store managers should be less concerned with resellers and more about store topics like hitting target objectives, making sure lego stocks them with desirable sets and promos, etc...

any lego store mgt who is concerned about reselling is a moron or short-sighted.

it's sad how lego and their employees forgot the revenue and publicity that's related to the secondary sales market.

Yeah, I agree. I just got off the phone with my local LEGO store, just to see how things are.  They had 5 this morning and all 5 went out and they're getting two more tomorrow but the store manager's attitude was just wait until the release dies down in the next few months. This thing isn't going anywhere for awhile plus more perks are coming up.

He was also pretty happy when the news of this leaked and the re-sellers watched their prices fall immensely on the old Falcon.

Given the length of time the original Death Star was on the market, I would be surprised if this set has a short run.  Unless the production, freight, or warehousing costs for this set are sky high, there would be very little reason to limit the life of this set.

Right.  Honestly, unless you had a picture taken with the designer, signature and proof of purchase, any set being sold promoting this special event has to be questioned.  I really have no idea of what value this would add to the set, but if any of these new Falcon are worth anything, it would be those 100 sold at the Leicaster store.

My local LEGO store plays cheap on the promos. Even when the website will toss in the two freebies - say "spend $50 to get X and buy any star wars to get Y" she makes you choose either X or Y. I put the sets back and said thanks I'll buy online.

Unfortunately we were without a LEGO store for so long and LEGO deals in Canada at TRU and Walmart are so crappy and unpredictable they probably do hit their sales targets.

yup.  this one might be available at retail longer than 10179 was  (2007 - 2010) .  maybe not as long as 10188.  who knows with lego though.

i just don't see an $800 set being a solid seller after the initial 2 waves of die hard SW fans and AFOLs buy  their copy.  ...and it's not like little johnny's grandmom is going to buy this.  then again, lego might make this set available for longer than expected because of it's a huge marketing advertisement (largest and most expensive set, it's star wars, great display model, etc...)

as i stated before, i think part of the increased MSRP over 10179 was allocated for shipping so i think lego is covered there.

The Time Lapse video I saw showed something like 34 hours over 8 days to build it.

Same here.  According to website it is a back order status.  Wonder what the estimated ship date is.  Sucks considering it was not back order status when the order was placed.

My local store had 24 for sale so if all UK stores had the same that's 462 units sold including the 150 in leicester square, not many and initially I read they were giving 20,000 VIP cards out so maybe 20,000 is the production run this side of christmas

There is about 70 stores in the US and from what I have read here about an average of 8 units per store so 560 so perhaps each country has been given no more than 500 ish for there first run? Say france and germany had the same and then the countries with less stores got 50-100 units that leaves a few run of distribution left leading up until the end of 2017.

who knows how many were available online maybe 1000 across the world?

Mine too.  Better believe lego is getting some hate mail if I don't receive this thing in the 3-8 days they promised
