An unfortunate side effect of the scale and medium used. I imagine at a significantly larger ratio, it would be possible to give both characters proper joints and dimensions. As the MOC stands, they are relatively 'in scale' of each other and the surroundings although the bench is still indeed too big but works. Shoot, even minifigures don't really sit on chairs so much as in them making bar scenes with stools kind of awkward.
