At least for me, the surprise points disappear when I apply ANY coupon to my cart.  It has been like this since January

I am still going to try, my cart showed $5 off $50/$10 back in points for over $75/$1 back in points for economy shipping.  Not entirely sure where to look for the $15 off but if it does not take I will try just a plain $30+ order with no promotions.

Yes, for the most part. I can get a $10 back on $50 to work every so often.  @legogregors just mess around with it until something works to your satisfaction.

Use one of these $10 off $75 in combination with $10 back in points.  It should work if you are over $75, but not below $75.

Interesting ... as mentioned before, I had a $76 purchase this morning, to which I first applied $10 off $75 to make it $66, then went through the checkout process and during payment applied $42 in points (which included the recently added $15 surprise points from last week's promo), reducing the total price to $24, plus $2 tax. This still gave me free shipping, as that is determined post-coupons, pre-points.

I should have been clearer, I was talking about the unprompted surprise points that just appeared on my account from time to time.  The one you mentioned required some actions from you (ie, order $75 by this weekend) to get it.

I have been noticing more unprompted surprise points so far this year, 2-3 times it has been $5 on relatively low purchase amounts.  I don't see mention of them in the emails but there are so many different places to check. 

Finding the latest $15 off $30 promotion was a fluke.

Gotcha! I had an issue with those surprise points before the weekend on Sears.com, where they were showing and then when I got my order confirmation they were gone. Ended up calling their CS who explained the difference (just like you guys just did - I guess I was just confused by the nomenclature) and who told me that you don't earn those points, but you get to just spend them during their activation period if you place an order. Anyway, she credited me those points as "normal" points
