You redeem the points for a cash statement balance, which you then spend on Amazon to earn more reward points with.  If you use your points on Amazon to buy things you don't get reward points for them.

Edit: Its 1:1 though, no penalty for redemption to statement balance.

At least it has been a fun day and it didn't all end at 10am this morning.  It's bee pretty interesting seeing new things pop up and wondering if the other will price match, etc.
