In Ep 8 news today (and as rumored), the release date has been delayed from May 2017 to Dec  2017.  We know Ep 7 was delayed due to a major script rewrites. I believe it's for a similar reason.

Star Wars: Episode VIII to Open December 15, 2017

The release date for the next film in the saga is confirmed.

Today, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: Episode VIII, originally scheduled for release in summer 2017, will now debut on December 15, 2017.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently in preproduction and will begin principal photography in London next month. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman will produce and J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski will executive produce.

I am still trying to figure that scene out too.  When I try to save someone, I usually t-bone them from the side.  I don't think that is dangerous and will result in killing the person who I am trying to save.  Rian couldn't think of a safer strategy?

It was never meant to be a standalone movie...just the introduction to the next two.  The Empire Strikes Back, which is considered by many STAR WARS fans to be the best of all time, ended with one HUGE cliffhanger.

I don't know if Han being captured was the biggest cliffhanger of all time, but the Vader reveal was certainly the biggest twist of all time. I picture a young M Night Shamalan taking notes in 1980.

The bad thing is, she stopped Finn from escaping in the first place. How is he supposed to be on board with this Canto Bight hullabaloo?

Different type of cliffhanger. ESB had a big bombshell drop, but it ends very open and without requiring an immediate pickup.

The only way it's comparable is if ESB ends with the credits immediately after the Vader reveal.

Really?  The Empire Strikes Back gave me a completely "incomplete" feeling.  I never expected any of these first two movies to satisfy all questions and concerns.

Yeah, me either. I don't think I was super clear in my first comment. I basically meant that I never liked the idea to have the movie end on a critically important scene, because it either requires the next film to pick up at that very moment or to skip past that moment (which is a lose-lose, IMO). 

As much as I loved the Luke scene at the end of TFA, ending it with Rey and Chewie entering hyperspace would have avoided that issue. It also would make it much more similar to that ending of ESB, where something is coming and there's some suspense - but it's not immediate.

It was pretty big.  It was almost equal to an Adam West Batman sort of cliffhanger.  It was HUGE.

I think what ruined it for me was Luke throwing the light saber over his head in TLJ.  I thought it was funny at first, but really?  Would a Jedi really do that?  I always thought Luke tried too hard to be cool.  He was and is not Jedi material in my opinion.  He is a whiner.

He's post Jedi. Ever since Empire it was clear that he was not going to be a traditional Jedi. He didn't beat Vader and the Emperor by doing what Yoda and Obi-wan wanted but the complete opposite by stressing his feelings and attachment. All these years I was hoping to see the new Jedi Order, half expecting Luke to embrace balancing the light and the dark. It didn't have to go that way to interest me but having Luke regress back to being a whiner (which he was not by ROTJ) while utterly failing to train new Jedi was a poor choice.

Once a whiner...always a whiner.  He was cool for about 5 minutes at the beginning of The Return of the Jedi.  That's it.  LOL.

On 1 hand I do not want them to recast, but on the other hand I am curious to see how much damage a recast could inflict on the franchise.   

They had time to fix the whole Princess Leia thing if they really wanted.  You want to talk about putting the next guy in a bind, Rian did it by not taking care of her when he could have.

A real person died. Not a movie character. A real person. Her parts in the film were finished. Her final acting performance.

Yeah, it's not ideal for the next film or the franchise. But that's the least important of all of that. I'm thankful that her final performance was released unaltered, and that we all got to celebrate her one more time. She wasn't given much in TFA, and she had some really great scenes in TLJ (specifically at the end, which is when people want her written out).

Regardless, they have still have to deal with it.  We're talking about recasting, CGI version, writing her out in the crawl, etc. none of that seems disrespectful and I don't feel it would have been disrespectful to alter TLJ.  Maybe doing so to the proximity to her death would have been more offensive, but as they say, the show must go on.

How is that a shitty thing to say? He simply stated they had time to fix (Id use the word address) the Leia situation. I didn't read anything else into it. I'm, not sure how you did.

Another thing... Whether you enjoyed the film or not, Did anyone think the Mary Poppins scene was... awesome? Good? Totally plausible? Needed to be kept in? Didn't need to be adjusted?

It easily could have been, reach out for a cable with the force, draw yourself back in.  Force grab Ackbar and bring him to safety.

I'm a huge fan of TLJ, but that scene is always so visually jarring to me.

Like, I don't have an issue with the events in that scene. It's just the way that it was shot. Something about it is still so strange to me after several watches.
