I've just finished James Luceno's book, Catalyst. He's written a number of decent SW books.

 It was alright as a SW book goes.  At least now I know the full backstory of the  Erso Family and their buddy Krennic going into the film.  

No Vader or Emperor except being mentioned.  Highlights were the Death Star stuff and the few chapters Tarkin was in.   

Main story  takes place from just before ROTS to about 4 years after that.
