I'm not so sure it's overstocked by resellers.  Many ignored until late and it wasn't a popular investment at the beginning.  Heck, Darin hasn't even started buying yet and he'll get 50 before it's all said and done.

Let sleeping dogs lie. Or it will be retired already yesterday!

I called CS and the agent was 100 % sure that it will return. They just don't have a new date of availability and an appropriate status. "It's definitely not the same 'Sold out' as with R2-D2."

He said currently software has it in product range until December 2015 but that doesn't necessarily mean they will produce it until then.

As always take it with a grain of salt or two.

Sometimes those LEGO employees do have something valuable to tell us after all.

That was from January. A lot of business decision can change in 8 months. This will be interesting to watch how fast will Target's inventory go at $285.

Thanks for digging out my old post - I had forgotten about it myself. ;)

In all fairness they're 1 for 1 in "tips" they've given me.  I still think they have to be considering retiring some sets in the run up to x-mas.  With all the new stuff hitting the shelves it might not be a case of production capacity but just of shelf space capacity.  Unless we're going to see a trnding shift to some online only sets.

Called one of my local lego stores yesterday and asked if they had any R5's in stock.  They said yes so I asked if they could hold 2 since that was the LEGO Shop at Home limit.  The guy told me "Sorry, the limit is 1 right now because they're retiring".  Called another local lego store after that and they were all out of stock but the guy told me that they have been getting fewer and fewer R5's in each order and that they would not be receiving any in their Wednesday order.  Called the final local store and they were out of stock but dint really give me any other information.  Take it for what its worth but for me the signs are pointing to retired.

9493 is all about the exclusive Jek Porkins minifig.

*cough, cough*

Now i will have to sell my R5's so i can buy back all the 9493's i sold lately. Hopefully selling 9493 to buy R5's works out ok

I knew there must be something driving that set :)  Interesting to see the price appreciation on that one now.  Must be some serios collectors out there because if your considering that one its only a small step up to R5... unless that it is the case that R5 is out of the door and you cant find one.  Making 9493 the next best thing.

The last one I've seen in my Lego store was probably about 3 weeks ago. They only had 1 on the shelf. Haven't seen one since.

But what does this all mean with regional retirements? EU retired Maerisk ship. N.A still available. N.A sold out of Red5 and Death Star, but Available in EU and Limit still at 5.

Errr... just seen the EU inventory report and 25% of the r5 stock has been taken up.  Someones gotten wind of something...

Or they're en route to America.

Have a look at the DS

Sold: 23 | 71.88%

Blooming heck!  Definitely something going on (or someone whats to moc up some next level DS). Whens the SEC getting involved in an insider trading investigation??? :)

Although whats the normal selling rate for these sets?  23 a day doesn't actually sound too outrageous to me given it is a "Europe wide thing" - similarly with the R5 set sales.

SEC investigation rescinded.

Insider trading? Lego is privately held...

That was my (poor) attempt at humour :)  .

It is interesting to watch a rumour break though and then suddenly all available stock of said set gets bought up.  I do wonder how much of it is actually re-sellers though and how much is collectors who realise that if they miss the boat now then its going to cost them considerably more in the long run.  Having to store a set for a few months you were going to buy anyway has to be a better alternative to waiting a few months running the risk its now going to cost you 50% more.

If both the UCS Red 5, and 9493 are both gone by the holiday season, this gives me hope that 9493 is going to go over 200.00.  I saw it reach 160 the other day on resellazon.

If 9493 goes to $200, I'll kiss my last one goodbye.

Yeah, who would've thunk it a year ago.  Lego even put the "Retiring Soon" label on this set last fall/winter.  I wish I would have picked up many more when 9493 was available for <$50 at Target, Amazon, etc...

I was just about to return 2 R5's to Walmart when this thing showed sold out.  If it EOL, thats a sign and I was lucky to not return it.  I have about a dozen :)

This. I wish I had held one. I made a bad gamble from the first trailer that the new one was at least the same color scheme. Going to be a couple of years I bet before they refresh the classic (but they will I would bet - Death Star run X-Wing, or something like that).
