Class of '15 - sets we loved and hated

So the year is pretty much done in terms of sets to be released that haven´t been leaked - Hoth Exclusive is the main exception.

What sets that came out in 2105 have grabbed your attention in a good or bad way and why?

Here, in no particular order, are my top 5 good and bad ones:

Good.

42043 Mercedes. Pneumatics, record parts content and outstanding use of Lego to create an accurate and complex workingmodel. What many AFOLs have been waiting for.

60095 Boat. I love the shipwreck and the storytelling element to this set. It really stands out from run-of-the-mill City remakes.

750093. Final duel. Good to see a new OT set that isn´t a spaceship. Again, the storyteling element is fundamental.

70751 Temple of Airjitzu This is what the F40 could have been. Detail, size and a shot in the arm for the theme.

75104 MF. Xmas wouldn´t be the same for reselleres without an MF to flip!

Bad.

10248 F40. Not a bad set but it has only served to disappoint those who were looking for a bigger, more detailed set.

41543 Turg. Lego´s Donald Trump prize for P.R. goes to the byline for this model.

10249 Toy Shop. Haven´t I seen you somewhere before?

76035 Jokerland Yet another overhyped and overpriced Batman set. Messy execution, the sum is not greater than the parts.

21302 Big Bang. It´s just a baseplate and a wall. Ok, there are minfigs and printed parts too, but I don´t get it. Seems I am in the minority when sales are taken into account!

Yeah, no large sets and it´s kind of the last hurrah. Late 2013 early 2014 was the chima golden era.

Intersting to see so much support for the Ninjago Exclusive.....

From a personal non-investment POV...

Liked:

Temple of Airjitzu

UCS Slave and Tie Fighter

Detective's Office

Birds & Wall-E

24 Hr Race Car

Mystery Machine

Not so much:

No large Architecture set

Ferris Wheel

Pirates re-launch was a bit too familiar

Big Bang Theory

F40 - not too bad, but the T1 continues to be a hard act to follow

Endless super hero sets

Dimensions - I just don't get it, maybe I'm getting old lol.

How could I forget to add 24 Hr Race Car to my 2015 like list? It is awesome!

Good:

Ferris Wheel (let' s hope they can continue the theme longer than 5 yrs without re-releases ;-))

Tie Fighter (iconic - best SW ship ever)

All new modulars.

All MF series

Simpsons QEM

Respect for the new Ninjago exclusive. First time I would be tempted to pick one of this theme up.

Bad:

Elves (looks too much like playmobile)

Scoobidoo (would've been better to pay for a better licence - mansion looks nice though)

BBT (ovbiously, even though I got one)

Birds (I don't want to showcase them for a reason)

WVToyShop (terrible choice)

Friends (for turning into something very stereotyped / some sets borderline "vulgar")

In the end the balance is positive even though WVTS was a true bummer.

It´s one of two sets  I have bought for myself so far this year but I still prefer the Arocs and limited my likes to 5!

A little to soon for me.  I'll chime in closer to the end of the year.

2015 positive surprises for me:

  • all Elves sets, they're really good
  • Ferris Wheel
  • Ninjago Temple of Airjitzu
  • SW Imperial Shuttle Tydirium
  • Friends Grand Hotel
  • WV Toy Shop

2015 negative surprises for me:

  • CMF series 14: monsters

Everything else wasn't surprising in either direction, e.g. Detective's Office which is great but what else would you expect from a modular house?

Also from a personal non-investment POV:

Sir Lovesalot:

Temple of Airjitzu

UCS Slave 1

Detective's Office

24 Hr Race Car

Ferris Wheel

Simpsons QEM

Mystery Machine

CMF series 14: monsters

Master Wu's dragon - Falcor the luck dragon

JW dinos

Jokerland

Kinda like:

F40 - gimme a Countach any day though

Tie Fighter - too much wing?

SW Imperial Shuttle Tydirium

WV Toy Shop

Deep sea exploration vessel

JW main sets

City space port

Arocs

Not really interested:

Birds

Wall-E

Elves

Friends

No thank you sir, no thank you at all!:

Big Bang Theory - I just don't get the appeal, to the point I'm angered for the other possibilities that this was chosen ahead of.

Pirates re-launch - it's not a fair comparison but i missed out on the Imperial Flagship and i resent anything similar that doesn't come close.

Dimensions - cash sink

Chima

Thanks for the opinions. It is always useful to see what people think about sets from a non investment potential as it could suggest what will be in demand from future dark ages afols.

Seems Birds is one of those love it or hate it sets but enough loves makes it worth following.

  • 2 weeks later...

Love the Birds but not interested in paying over $40 for it.

Good: Sets I got

Toy & Grocery Shop

Detective's Office

Good: Sets I didn't get:

Ferris wheel

Airjitzu Temple

24H Race Car

Louvre

MF

Bad:

F40 (Looks too similar to Speed Racers in the past)

Kwik E Mart (Why bright yellow)

XWing (rubber band issue)

Beach Hut (Bright yellow, again, why)
