Lego buying and selling in the UK (and EU)

Hi, I've really enjoyed reading this forum over the last month and appreciated the insight.

I've certainly got carried away at times in the early days of investing having read some of the advice in the forums. However, I occassionally notice a post that says something doesn't really apply to Europe, e.g the popularity of a certain line, or where is good for selling, or the time it takes for items to increase in value.

So as a lot of the advice is written with north america in mind, I thought it would be really useful to hear from those based in the UK and Europe.

- What are the main differences for our market to the US

- What sort of discout and ROI do you usually aim for?

- Where do you prefer to buy and sell trom?

- What delivery companies do you recommend for the mid to large sizes?

- Any good cheaper 2nd hand selling sites for used sets we want to make ourselves?

- Are there any yearly sales in our region to look out for?

- Aside from xmas are there peak times to sell in the UK?

- any good tips on saving in the UK by buying from the EU while the Euro is down?

- Any recommended toy shops for picking up older stock?

Sorry if this has all been covered elsewhere but i couldn't find a thread that focused on it.

Cheers

B

At this price you can't lose even if they perform badly!

Exactly, even if I only get RRP it's a decent return. The Lonely Mountain's are the ones I'm happiest with.

Thanks.  Indeed a shame Millano has sold out - that would have been a great deal!

Although saying that could have done without this sale :)  Wallet is getting a little light this month.  Already got myself some Mos Eisley, X-man and Bat-mobile UCS for the personal collection this week.

I am a sucker for the sales though.

Just been to Smyth toys in Reading and they had few lego sets on clearance 79016 Attack on lake town for £20, 21023 flatiron building for £20, Bennys Spaceship for £50, 70170 Ultracopter for £30 and some Chima sets e.g 70145 Mammoth Stomper for £30

maybe I just need to watch the movie but at 36 for the drop ship is that good buy in point for an investment? I like the setset (@ 36) but just not sure what it has going for it that will make people buy this one as opposed to any other.

Looking at eBay listings I'd see this one as just a quick flip. Anyone feel this one will do well as a long term hold?

It depends on your market, to whom you are selling and how much profit you want.

I can move these at £50 cash per set or part the figs and base weight, selling bulk new colour. 1.43kg (incl. packaging) with 8 figs, 8.2pp at retail and 4.2pp at £36. Some sets are great value parts boxes at heavy discount. Bulk grey is my best seller.

If your plan is to sit on them for 2-3 years until the next Lego movie and sell on eBay, there are probably better sets; but without knowing your plans.

Lego shop have Chima 4 minifigures accessory set 850779 for half price at £5.24. Is that a good buy? http://shop.lego.com/en-GB/LEGO-Legends-of-Chima-Minifigure-Accessory-Set-850779

  • 2 weeks later...

Got the last two Green Lantern Vs Sinestro 76025 for £10 each in Sainsburys in Plymouth Marsh Mills today.

Thought that was a decent drop, put the info into my Brickfolio when I got home, was told they are worth £10.79 each!!! duh!!!

Lol never mind.:mda:

Not sure if this is general knowledge but 21303 WALL-E set is available at Tesco right now. Its also on the boost.

Not sure what's going on at sainsburys, but I've seen posts on fb about bargain Lego star wars stuff, and my local one had empty Lego star wars shelves.

thanks - wasnt aware of that and still got a few boost vouchers left. Good post!

Thehut.com has quite a few discounted Lego sets available plus they are offering a further 10% discount on any two sets bought at once, or 15% on any three sets bought at once. Worth a look.

Go check out your local Sainsburys as there are some good deals in store but it varies from store to store.

I went to 2 different stores and one of them had hardly any deals at all apart from Simpsons Minifigures 5 for £5!!! The other (super) store had half price on quite a few different items but Simpsons minifigures were only 3 for 2 lol. I got a Ninjago Jungle Raider for £9 for my eldest and Kashyyk Troopers were £6 although they were £8 in the other store. A few other bits and bobs available - not the greatest range of stuff but you can't knock 50% off.

Just got back from another Sainsburys. No deals in there apart from 5 minifigures for £5 so I bought another mitfull.

On the plus side I had a wander around the Smyths that is on the same site and they had Flatiron buildings for £10 so picked up all the decent boxes and left the tatty ones. Not a completely wasted journey in the end.

It looks to me like all the decent deals are in the massive Sainsburys superstores so don't bother unless you have one near you as the smaller stores are disappointing.

Thanks shanks. I'll give sainsburys a look later today. Any sign of series 14 CMF in Smyth's??

Can't be any worse than the looks you get when sitting on the floor of TRU smooshing the CMFs. Kids and parents both staring, wondering; WTF?!
