Update: Trades, Want Ads, Manual Orders and Currency

Today a big update was pushed on Brick Classifieds. One major change was the way that the site handles currency.  Before it was doing a bunch of conversions to try and handle the currency conversions. It worked, but was not ideal.  A lot of pages have been reworked and it is the way it should have been done from the start.  Make sure your store currency is set properly and whatever you enter as a value it will hold.  No more conversions unless you are need to see it in different currency and at checkout.

NOTE: If you are selling on Brick Classifieds and your store currency is not USD, please take a few minutes to visit your shop and make sure all your products are set at the price you want them to be at.

WANT ADS

We also added a few new features to help build business conversations with potential buyers. The first is Want Ads. This is a pretty straight forward feature for buyers and sellers. All registered users can post a Want Ad. You will fill out a title, description of what you are looking for, price range, quantity, condition as well as location that the item you would like it to come from.

After you fill out your post, you will see listings like this:

At this point, vendors will be allowed to come to your post and create a bid for your business.  Vendors will need to have this item in their store inventory.  They will then select it from their inventory and put a price.  If it works for you, you can accept their offer.  When the offer is accepted, the vendor can then go into the shop admin area and build an invoice in the new Manual Order feature.  It is pretty simple to use.  Once the invoice is created, the vendor can search for the interested user and they will be emailed the invoice.  If the buyer clicks the button to confirm the order, they will be taken directly to the shopping cart on the site, all the items in the invoice will already be waiting in the cart and they will just need to checkout with the agreed upon price and shipping.

TRADES

Another feature we added was the ability to do trades with other vendors (Note: All trades must be done vendor to vendor and again, the items of trade must be in your shop inventory).  Like the Want Ads, vendors can ad items to their listing from their inventory.  They can add a title and description about what they are interested in trading for.

Once the trade is posted, other vendors can come in and offer items from their inventory and submit to the original poster. You can go back and forth negotiating until you both agree on the items being offered.  You will click a link to approve each offer which will then lock in the trade.  The entire transaction including any cash offerings are done however you wish outside of Brick Classifieds. Once everyone receives their items, you will be able to click a button that says that you are received what you were promised and then provide feedback on the trade.

Users will now be able to get feedback on regular shop purchases, want ad and trade transactions. Give it all a try, feel free to PM with feedback.  I wanted to get the features out there and of course they can be improved. We need to start somewhere though.

Just want to say I did my first manual order on Brick Classifieds and it is a really cool and easy thing to do.  I was chatting with another Brickpicker member here about some extra sets I have and we settled on a good deal that works for both of us.  I went to my store area, added my set, enter the quantity and price then searched for their username.  Sent.  Two minutes later I got a notification it was paid for already from the invoice that is emailed out.  Really nice job and hope to use it more

Good, I am glad it went well for you.  I like this feature very much. Will have a few more updates soon that is aimed to spur conversation/negotiation/etc.

with the latest addition of "make an offer", I can see some pros and cons of the feature.  The pro is that more option to potentially make a sale is always a good thing.  The con is that the existence of such feature begs for customers to make a lower offer by default.  Sellers may begin to mark up their prices in anticipation of such behavior (to make some room for negotiation), which takes away a nice benefit that BC is (or should be known for), which is lower Lego prices due to lower fees.

having said that, is there a way to expand on the "make offer" feature, such as the ability to communicate back to the buyer instead of just accepting/declining?  I've already declined 2 offers, but wanted to let the buyer know that I was willing to meet them in the middle.  An ability to counteroffer would be very helpful.  I know I can just message them on the side, but buyers may not always realize it.

Good feedback and I will enhance it.  Its good to launch at a point and see what happens.  I agree with you.  The goal is to get the communication to be easy and work out a deal. It will get better.

Just wanted to say thanks for building all this stuff.  I have been visiting Brick Classifieds on a daily basis and there is always a lot of good stuff getting listed on there.  Just wanted to say that I really dig the Lastest Listings (http://www.brickclassifieds.com/latest-listings) link you added that allows you to keep scrolling through all the items posted on the site.  Makes it much easier to see all the stuff there

How do you add a new trade?  The site says to "choose product"  but there is nothing in the box to choose.  I click on the "add new item" button and nothing happens either. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have items in your store?  In order to trade, you need to have items in your shop so that you can post it.  Its not like a want ad, were you create a listing, it is more of a business transaction.  "I have these items in my shop and want to trade, what do you have."

Oh, I thought is was separate from the store.  Like the original trade forum.  So you have to have something listed for sale in order to trade?

Yes, its more like a business to business type of thing.  Has its own feedback, etc.

I miss the old trade section

I apologize if this has been asked before, but is the login to Brick Classifieds secure and encrypted?  I'm not seeing an https:// when I go to register.  Thanks.

Having https in the front a web url has nothing to do with how secure and encrypted the "login" is. Https defines that the communication between your browser and the server is encrypted. You can have https and still have crappy "login" security.

Using https prevents passwords from being passed as plain text to the server when your login is validated. Jeff would have to speak directly about what he's using but to be honest it doesn't appear to be https. It's also bad form to publicly speak about what you might be doing or not doing for security reasons... :)

When setting up a listing, can it only be set up in U.S. Dollars? I have my currency set to cdn$ but when I go to set up a listing, us$ seems to be the default and can't be changed. Or am I missing something?

If this is true, is it possible to post listings in the currency of the shops choice because if I'm selling to a fellow Canadian, we both lose out on the money being converted twice.

Edit: I was looking at the manual orders and also seems to be the same there.
