Any idea when the Death Star will be discontinued? It's been around about 4 years...way past normal set lifespans in stores. Thoughts?

  • Hanging is by far the best way to display it.  It has a hollow core, so we used a small piece of wood painted black with an eye bolt and picture hanging wire.  That way its supported from the bottom.

  • I think this pretty much sums it up. A five year old boy (my son) watching Star Wars for the first time ever. The Death Star is... fascinating.  When it is gone (whenever, if ever, that finally happe

haunted house. i've got five and am going back for more. this set is amazing, and i would be surprised if it doesn't at least double in price within two years.

I am also thinking about getting a Haunted House myself. The only thing holding me back right now is that I can't find it under retail anywhere. It may go EOL and I'll be still waiting.

You haven't missed it being discounted......it has not been as of yet and it could never be. I dont know what to think about it ever being discounted.

As I knew the Shuttle 10212 and the Potter 10217 Alley would be big money maker's. I am shooting for 50 Haunted Houses and 25 or more of the New Cinema Palace thats coming out.

This question makes me laugh! Not because it is a stupid question but because The Haunted House (10228) came out in 2012 and I actually believe it will go EOL before the better to be named Endless Life Star (10188)! I can almost promise that 10228 will need to be around for at least five years to come close to as many MISB 10188s stashed away. Although, in all fairness, the market for 10188 is probably larger, but is it large enough to soak up all the MISB inventory sold since it came out in 2008? Only if you count in decades! At this point in time 10228 makes a lot more sense than 10188! Makes me laugh out loud!

This is all true, but what if the Haunted House stays on the shelf as long as the the Death Star has? If that happens then potenitally a lot more people could hoard away multiple Haunted Houses since they are much cheaper to acquire than the Death Star (one HH is less than half the cost of one DS). Something to think about.......

Great point! People get tunnel vision with some of these sets. When I see people buying 30-50 of any set it makes me LOL......literally.

Haha yep, there are much better ways to invest your hard earned cash, and much better ways to diversify in a product that has 500+ new sets released each year. There are so many under the radar sets that people forget about, and/or are never talked about, and they are some of the biggest winners. Purchasing multiple modulars (while it may still yield a nice return), ISN'T something that is under the radar, and IS something that many already know about. Both the Haunted House and Death Star are sweet sets, but I think it's very important that everyone thinks outside the box some when investing in Lego, because there really is a huge variety of amazing sets out there.

Anyhow to answer the original question, I would go for one Haunted House, and then wait for the Death Star to get heavily discounted (maybe down around the $300-$320 price range), although waiting for this deal may take some patience. However, with patience you will end up with 2 of the best Lego sets out there!

Well, it isn't so much whether I have enough money to buy a DS. It's more like which horse would I rather bet on? Even if I had 20 or 50 HHs, I still think with $360 I'd rather buy 2 HHs than 1 DS. I've got a pretty diverse Lego portfolio, so there isn't an issue there. I think it's obvious the overwhelming majority believe the HH has a better future. Let's hope we're right! p.s. My plan is to buy a 10188 in 2020, right before it goes EOL.

No one can tell you when the exact time to buy is. The best way to look at it is to do your research. Check out the market prices on eBay and what they are ending in. Google up and see if Death Star has been offered cheaper before. Last year, Amazon had it for 339 I believe. Once you get the hang of market prices, you'll realize when the right time to buy is for YOU. Also be careful because you are sinking quite a large amount of money in these big sets. Be prepared to hold in case they do not discontinue for a couple more years. If you see yourself needing the money in the near future, you will probably lose money.

Yes, be prepared to hold onto this set for a few years before you see any real return. $358 is a good price for sure, but as stated above, a lot to sink into a single set that has been around for going on 5 years now, at least for investment reasons. I am sitting on an extra right now, and personally wishing I didn't, even though down the road 5 years from now it could be worth quite a bit more, assuming Lego isn't still selling it:)

Anyone wanna trade 3 MISB GEs for 1 MISB 10/10 10188???

Unless Lego decides to release a smaller Death Star, this is going to be the only way to get your hands on one. With the new movies coming out and more AFOLs coming out of their Dark Ages, I think we'll be fine.

What price did you all pay for Death Star 10188? It's still on Amazon for $358.00.

I paid 335 for the 1 I built for display. The cheapest I have seen them advertised for is 309.

$289

$289

Was that an advertised price? Where was that from?

I'm willing to bet what Pirate paid is false. It seems the only reason he made an account is to make negative and/or idiotic comments.

We will never know. People can get discounts for lots of reasons. I plan to post later this week on how to get Helms Deep for under $80. No drop shipping and no eBay. I have it all planned out and I will post my result later this week.

eh maybe. I know there were a few people on another Lego forum that called TRU customer service and talked their way into getting B2G1F (max was 2 so it was 2 DS and 1 SSD)... with shipping I believe it worked out to be 260$ each...

But they had to complain and the whole situation was a little shady and morally questionable imho. It wasn't an advertised price. That sale wasn't supposed to include UCS sets is why I asked if it was advertised.

There are always better deals out there but the advertised deals that are available to everyone is what the question was referring to.

I agree. That price is definitely possible.

You might be right, but on the other hand, Set 10188 is a cash cow for Lego. Might be one of their most popular sets ever. Tons of pieces and minifigs. I'm not so sure they will be stopping it. Lego doesn't think like a collector. They think about making money and if the set is still selling well, then why stop production?

Not only that, but Lego executives probably know all about the new Star Wars movie coming out in less than two years. If the set is selling well, it would probably be a crazy financial decision to discontinue it, since it will likely boom even more as soon as the movie comes out.

That said, if sales flag at all during the interim, they probably won't keep it around hoping for a recovery during the movie. They'll probably just discontinue it.
