My son and I have been working on this set for the past few days. He is seven and does all the building. I just find the pieces for him. We are 3/4 done, and it has been a very enjoyable build thus far. Nothing too difficult or out of the ordinary. You will enjoy it. Have fun!

  • Hanging is by far the best way to display it.  It has a hollow core, so we used a small piece of wood painted black with an eye bolt and picture hanging wire.  That way its supported from the bottom.

  • I think this pretty much sums it up. A five year old boy (my son) watching Star Wars for the first time ever. The Death Star is... fascinating.  When it is gone (whenever, if ever, that finally happe

Pretty good deal for $310.  Nice score.  Discounts have been rare and are getting rarer on the big sets.  Not sure how long you'll have to wait to see it go EOL and get the hopefully resulting value increase, but at least you are well ahead of the curve with that discount.

With regards to the price, that was why I pulled the trigger. It's also the reason why I'm going to hold out on the Sydney opera house until I get lucky and find it for like 250-280. It seems a little high for me right now.

If it ever goes EOL, I'm not terribly worried. It might take a while, but it will go up in price. My theory is, because it's so popular now, imagine when it clears off store shelves... I believe it will only go up in value in some similar fashion to the other large SW sets.

Just re-read your OP and saw you were going to open and build it, so I guess my EOL comments don't really matter.  $310 for a great build and 20 minifigs is very very good.  And hey, if you do sell it used down the track you'll probably still make a bit of money.

The "Live" Star is a great build.  There is so much playability with 3 floors with 4 different quadrants per floor.  It took me about 1 and 1/2 football game to put the whole thing together.  If you decide to resell, it goes for around 350 on Ebay for used.  That'll basically cost you about 20 bucks to build it after fees and shipping at your 310 entry point.   Have fun building!

It a brilliant score for $310. Definately worth building it. I assumed you are keeping the rest of the death star that you have for future EOL sale....

To make another one? We can all hope. Lol

I hope they make another one.  I would like to see another variant of the Death Star 2 or the first Death Star in the guise of a DS2.  Not a playset.  The one thing I would like to see IF that were to ever happen, is a little more detail in the arena of color and weathering and stuff.  Maybe some more greebling or something.  Of course then we might be looking at a 4k+ easy set...hmmm...one can dream though.

I assume you mean that I have more than one??  If that's what you mean, then no, I only have purchased the one.  At the moment the money I put into Lego's is for me to build and enjoy and display.  Right now my investment money is going straight into my 401K.  I'm seeing ridiculous returns for the year right now and I want to continue to ride that gravy train.

The Death Star set is brilliant. I am not even sure why Lego would stop producing them.

'Brilliantest' post I've seen in a while xD

I wonder how much longer the set is going to be in production. There has been much speculation about the set's EOL, but we are not sure about the exact date of EOL. If the set was about 25% off I would buy it.

Lego's new ad that can be found magazines such as New England Home, Evo, and Robb Report.  ha

Name change: 10188 "Life" Star instead of 10188: Death Star

Good for you.  Buy a set and enjoy it.  The DS isn't my cup of tea, I'm more of a SSD kind of guy.  The minifigures included in that set are starting to look dated compared to newer releases and the lack of pupils.

I'm debating if I should buy this or the SSD from TRU, with all my giftcards and the TRU holiday bonus we'll be receiving (assuming we can use all that free $$$)!

SSD. The price is not jacked up and it has been in production for a lot less time.

This is something that bothers me too, especially when I recently put together a 6211 and immediately swapped out the heads on the Imperial Officers.
