10188 - UCS: Death Star

Any idea when the Death Star will be discontinued? It's been around about 4 years...way past normal set lifespans in stores. Thoughts?

  • Hanging is by far the best way to display it.  It has a hollow core, so we used a small piece of wood painted black with an eye bolt and picture hanging wire.  That way its supported from the bottom.

  • I think this pretty much sums it up. A five year old boy (my son) watching Star Wars for the first time ever. The Death Star is... fascinating.  When it is gone (whenever, if ever, that finally happe

I want to build one, so I've had my eye out for a used one for less than $300 for about six months now. Even used ones are selling for $350+ right now on ebay. Wait till Black Friday, it'll probably get down to $330 or so on Amazon.

329 to my front porch..I'll take one. 299 and I'll take 5. Even drop shipped. I won't be surprised to see it for 299 on May 4 2014.

Anytime I've been able to get one for under 315 I've bought them. I've actually never paid above 325 for one!

$317.58

and not a penny more!!

why 317.58 not 316.69?

Nice thanks for the advice. I have a chance at one now for 350 and I'm on the fence

$317.58

That's a shame Grolim 'cuz I was just about to PM you with one for $317.59...

Here in Australia, I need to be getting them at 400-450 for me to bite at any sale.

Amazon.fr had these discounted the other day as well the SSD, to just under 300 euros. I took the SSD only because I think it will retire first.

Sorry, my complex investing algorithms allow me no more than $317.58

I would not buy it for more than 320$

Uk

$0.00

Literally. Death Star to me stands out as proof that LEGO pays attention to its secondary market. Like they are saying "Hey, watch out. We could always never retire this, you know."

I am glad I don't count any of my money as tied up in this set.

$0.00

Really?  So if someone offered you a free DS you wouldn't accept it?  :hmm:

I answered the topic question of "When do you pull the trigger?" with a $0.00 price point, aka free. I don't think that means I wouldn't accept a free one.

Obviously my comment is a heavy exaggeration to illustrate my main point that this set has been a thorn in the side since it keeps getting produced, making returns take longer and be smaller in size.

probably around $250. Every day that this set is not retired presents a bigger liability for a flop/reduced profits.

I would be in at about $280, roughly 20% less than BP value.

I feel like I'd do it for 300 or less. But more than that and I just feel like I'd rather invest in something else. I agree in that the longer this thing sticks around and the more there are that sell, the less it's going to appreciate in the long run. I'm sure it will eventually see gains, but are those gains going to be worth tying up that much money in a big set for that long? Imagine those that bought one in 2009 for investment purposes. They will have to sell at a very high price to make the investment truly profitable.

If I really want the set, I am pretty sure I still can get this for $400 shipped a couple of months after EOL

After collecting for 4 years I've never owned or bought one. I feel this set will be around for a reasonable price for a really loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time. Light years perhaps! I never thought this set was really that cool, and id hate to be stuck with 5 of these ugly things... 2 haunted houses and few fun houses.. Or a imperial shuttle, that's what I'd like to get stuck with :)

UK sucks. near impossible to get the DS for under

No matter how long this set is made, I have a feeling it will experience quick gains after retirement.  If it simply doubles, it will be an 800 dollar set.  Tons of minifigs and great piece count.  Anything around 300 is good.

$320 $300
When When When? is the question.
Not only in the Price drop but EOL!

I have mixed feelings on this set.
Iconic set, tons of speculation. lots of potential upside.

on the other hand, It may go another 2 years or more, we don't really know what the execs. in Lego is thinking.
So what's the upside on a $320 - $400 investiment?
Even if it doubles, I dont think its a good number to sit on because it may take 1-? years of extra production time plus 1-3 year of secondary market to double.
So if I got 10 sets at say $350 that;s $3500 and I can sell it maybe in 2020

Guys, I dont have a crystal ball so don't rip this comment apart with your nasa data.

Having said all that, Im still going to pick up 2-4 sets just in case.
But I will wait until next year, this set is on the backburner, unless i see one below $300 of course.

Once upon a time TRU's BOGO sale included Hard to Find sets as well.  Getting DS at $300 was not just a dream
