Any idea when the Death Star will be discontinued? It's been around about 4 years...way past normal set lifespans in stores. Thoughts?

  • Hanging is by far the best way to display it.  It has a hollow core, so we used a small piece of wood painted black with an eye bolt and picture hanging wire.  That way its supported from the bottom.

Seems like a really big container ship arrived - DS 471, EV 211, R5 322, T1 607 and lots and of the new Star Wars sets

Wait till the Double VIP / Holiday train promos start and there won´t be much left!  The next 2 weeks will be boring but mid Oct there should definitely be some interesting things going on EOL wise.

Someone just posted on the BL forum that they saw 10188 in a new redesigned box on the shelf in Montreal.  Guess this has another good run left in it!

Emazers may as well go for 80 then.

Set 10188 Death Star his back with a new format also.Box his smaller and the
new logo expert appear at the right corner of the box.

finding it hard to believe they would put the expert logo on a SW box, isn't that basically a creator thing? Also no expert on any other licensed theme that was recently released . Guess we will have to wait for the pics...

can't imagine what could have possibly happened to make Lego reverse course on retiring this set...

I suspect the hundreds of sets sold when it was thought to be retiring and the subsequent truckloads of cash piled up in the CEO's office.

Yeah total mystery

I'm skeptical.. With such giant news like that why would he not take a picture of it.  I'm calling BS

Slave 1, Sandcrawler, Tie Fighter, Helicarrier, NEXT?  I seriously doubt it...

If they do let us all file a class action lawsuit against Lego. We've had enough!

I heard from a LEGO store employee that they are getting more.

Maybe TLG figured out a revolutionary way to produce sets, printed boxes on demand just as what Amazon has been doing with their books. So maybe it means there's no retirement in the future other than the licensing reason. This may also mean less people is going to buy/store their expensive sets at large any more. If this is the case, it's not necessarily a win (not necessarily a loss either) for them but they can eliminate a portion of the secondary market. Who knows... just speculating~~

Guys, we really should not be complaining unless you bought this set 8 years ago. Of which, I suspect only a handful of members here can raise their hands to it. For those of us that bought within the last 12 months, we should calm down. Keep accumulating if you haven't hit your desire qtn. If it retires after the xmas rush; awesome! If not, well... this game is a gamble after all.

This is a game changer if it's true. If TLG just does a box change to extend the life of a set this will make our job almost impossible.

Whoever  sees this as "job" gets zero sympathy from me.

I would also like to have seen a picture but remember that it's only giant news to people like us.

I don't remember anyone asking for sympathy.

Call it whatever you want. Job, "hobby" we are all here for basically the same reason.

Reguardless if you have 1 or 50 TLG extending the life of a set by just redesigning the box will cause us all problems. But alas we are arguing about a rumor that is unfounded and has no proof.

true but I figured if he posted on eurobricks some would care as well

Lego has changed the way they produce stock. They have the facilities to produce small batches often rather than large one of batches.

So glad I read the email deliveries when I've been away from the computer for a couple of hours & catch up on the deleted posts...

Also, I saw there was a reply on that other site:

There is very little chance that this set would have retired this close to the new movie. A case could have been made earlier in the year when we saw shortages, but at this point... What would be the point of retiring it? The new box will only stimulate sales once again and keep this set quite popular till another large Death Star version takes its place. I think it's time for people to look at the hundreds of other potential sets out there as collectibles instead of the same few dozen. LEGO can't keep them all in production.
