From a Reseller standpoint, obviously we hope they replace the current Lego Death Star with a new version.  But realistically it doesn't seem practical from TLC's standpoint, especially with Rogue One's plot centering around the Death Star itself.  Like I said, the most they'd do is probably change the packaging.  So there's the Brightside.

I think you might be confused, I think what resellers want is for the DS to retire and another one NOT be made.

  • Hanging is by far the best way to display it.  It has a hollow core, so we used a small piece of wood painted black with an eye bolt and picture hanging wire.  That way its supported from the bottom.

Apparently, Darth Vader wasn´t 100% honest in declaring DS´s emissions when homologating it.....

I'm not the one who brought up the idea of Replacing it in the first place.  FIrst of all I highly doubt it will Retire anytime within the next 2 years.  However if by some surprising turn of events they actually do retire it in the next couple months, and release a new version of the Death Star sometime next Fall/Winter to coincide with the opening of Rogue One..., the silverlining would be that the retired original Lego Death Star might still be highly sought-after thanks to the popularity of the new movie at that time.

I'm not the one who brought up the replacement either. This has been a rumor for a while now...

A time goes on here, the 10188 Death Star might be one of the best current investments I know of.  Considering all the discussions as of late of remakes of the UCS Snowspeeder and possible remakes of the Falcon and other large STAR WARS sets, this set could be the big winner.  There will be a new Death Star set at some point, but you know it will be quite different.  The characters, scenes and design of the new set will be different enough to have very little effect on the 10188 in my opinion.  This set will not be remade to anything close to this design...and if it is, it will have all new features to make both sets highly attractive to fans.  Plus, you know the new retro Rogue One movie is launching in 2016, so the new Death Star is not far away, making this one obsolete...but still desirable.

Unless they replace it...

lots of chatter about a replacement DS, but really if you think about it, Episode IV was about the initial testing of the new Battlestation. Rogue One will be about the stealing of the plans of the DS. I would not expect that there will be new Death Star with scenes from a different movie as the set pieces because as far as we know the DS won't even be completely built yet.

I subscribe to the current DS staying put in production until people cool there jets and find something else to hoard.

I think it's inconceivable that a movie about stealing the plans when the Death Star is 99% built doesn't have the Death Star in it. We ad a whole movie about a 66% complete Death Star. Plus Vader will be in it. Take that to the bank.

I think you may have misunderstood. I am not saying that there won't be a Death Star in the movie. What I am saying is that the current model depicts scenes from Episode IV. My guess is that in Rogue One the Death Star will be under construction, thus not lending itself to create memorable scenes for the rooms of the Lego set like the current version. My guess (and only a guess) is that a majority of major movie scenes take place in locales other than the DS.

I think you misunderstand the situation. The death star is 99% complete and where significant imperial activity is happening at this time. Vader, Tarkin and the fleet are based there. There will almost certainly be major scenes set there. Which is good reason for a new set.

I guess I will back up 4 DS 10188, but atm I fear it will be wasted money. I was lucky enough to store a two-digit amount of 10225, but for the 10188 I'm not really convinced. And the "We are currently making more, so please check back soon for availability."  does not really makes me happy. I wonder if they just fool us with this message, and the DS will disappear until the end of the year like 10221 some months ago. But really hard to say.... It could also be they don't stop 10118 production for another 2 year cycle...

90% of all big sets retire in November and December so why are people always crying months before the end of the year.

This one has to go because of the new movie, minifigs are outdated and have to go.

I also heard that lego changed all their boxes because the want to be green certificated and all new boxes need the FSC stamp.

ah, looks like I may need to consult wikiwookiee.com a little more often.

I think this pretty much sums it up. A five year old boy (my son) watching Star Wars for the first time ever. The Death Star is... fascinating.

When it is gone (whenever, if ever, that finally happens), just sit back and watch the prices skyrocket as this moment (pictured below) happens again and again all over the world.

I'm jealous that he has the ISD to swoosh around while he's watching.  That's awesome!

My son was like that when he first watched Star Wars IV, V and VI. Now his room is all Star Wars and he wants all the OT Lego sets. He won't be seeing Ep. VII until Mom and Dad check it out first, so essentially, the OT is all he knows and wants. I've got two DS in our storage room just for kids like him!

You nailed it! He's also shooting the little green lasers at Darth Vader every time Vader comes on the screen. He's getting to be a pretty good shot, actually… could probably hit a few womp rats.

He's just saying a 400 dollar haunted house wont appreciate as much as a death star. I am not sure i agree that the death star will out perform the haunted house. Assuming equal price points. Death star has the brand going for it. Haunted house has scarcity. I think scarcity is going to win out.

I wanted to snag some haunted houses before it hits 500+ because i see it at 1000 in 2 years. Will the Death star even retire before then?

As long as Lego doesn't 10249 the Haunted House

Offtopic: A little bit too narrow to the screen IMHO! ;) Not good for the eyes I would say.

i dont see how 10188 and DS in R1 go in hand. other than the shape, the scenes presented in OT DS have nothing to do with the new movie.

Seems like a really big container ship arrived - DS 471, EV 211, R5 322, T1 607 and lots and of the new Star Wars sets
