Any idea when the Death Star will be discontinued? It's been around about 4 years...way past normal set lifespans in stores. Thoughts?

  • Hanging is by far the best way to display it.  It has a hollow core, so we used a small piece of wood painted black with an eye bolt and picture hanging wire.  That way its supported from the bottom.

I'm not sure it can before SSD, though...Am I wrong?

Obviously the SSD will reach $1k before the DS, it retired 1 year ago.
The DS is already at $600 on both Ebay and Amazon.
If It reaches $650-$675 by next Sunday?....then $1k by Christmas is really reachable.

I expect I will hold mine for 3 years past the officially retired status date.

How do you know the 10188 HASN'T had an affect on the 10143????

Circumstantial evidence.  10143 routinely commands some of the highest prices on the secondary market in MISB condition (Ebay prices tend to be a bit lower, but it sells consistently above $2000).  There are only a handful of other sets that sell in that same neighborhood and if you compare the sales prices of 10143 to its UCS contemporary (10030) for which no replacement UCS set has been made, 10143 routinely sells for more.  So, if 10188 has had any downward pressure on 10143 on the secondary market, it is not evident to me.

Good for you, i am sure you will do well with them

Possibly 100% complete used set for $335, free shipping: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LEGO-Star-Wars-Death-Star-10188-/321811428776?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aed74b5a8

For anyone that still needs a personal copy

If he had ONE picture of all of the lego figures I would think about jumping on this thinking it probably is complete. (but not even one picture of the figures with a seller rating 1k+ makes me assume he is vague for a reason and the set is gutted.

He says he didn't see any mini figures.  Gut job.

For me the cheapest set on Amazon is $598.98 including shipping.

Only 4 sellers below $600.

3 have 11 copies total and one has 99.

eBay has only 8 us sellers with 8 copies total below $600

If this set stays gone (and it probably will not) it will be gold at Christmas and on 12 18 15.

I think that may be underestimating the number of people that may liquidate their stock in the short run (this Christmas). You might see some undercutting and such, just like what happened with SSD.

Since you can't reliably predict the action of fools, the future has become a great unknown.

maybe.

but I am not under estimating the riled up fan base that is about to be unleashed this Christmas

I asked the seller, "You say the set is 99% - 100% complete. There are 3803 pcs, so you are saying there will be less than 39 pieces missing (1%) if any. Correct? Do you guarantee that? " He wrote a several paragraph reply saying he was "highly confident " but couldn't make guarantees. Seems very suspicious. Seven photos of boxes and five photos of parts, showing a half-complete DS... where are all the parts that were taken off the half built one there on the table? How come they aren't in bags sitting next to it? This guy is not to be trusted.

Agreed but there isn't really any risk on the buyers part. If it isn't 99-100%complete then just open a SNAD case. You will win.

With as much feedback as that guy has, it's probably ok. But, that description is one of the worst I've ever read.

The worst!

This discussion reminded me to increase my placeholder price on my listings.  I usually park sets at double MSRP, but I can see this hitting $799 much faster than I want to sell it.

Sold the HH last month for $499.  Should have raised that placeholder too.  Oh well.

Hi guys,

I was at LEGO in MA over the weekend and spoke to a cpl of the employees that have worked at this one particular location for a long time. They told me emphatically that the DS retirement is a rumor and that they have been told by lego corporate to expect plenty of sets for the holiday season. They also mentioned that Pet Shop is indeed on it way out followed closely by tower bridge. I asked about the SOH but as far as they know it should be around a while longer. I bought a cpl extra DS on the news that it was retired also but will most likely return the one from target and put that money into set/sets that I need for my collection or believe will retire sooner.

Why would you rather return it for $400, when you could sell it today for $600?

I fully believe what you are being told is what you are being told.

Here is what I find interesting.

My memory may be faulty but ...

Red Five was on backorder for several months.  You could backorder it and let it sit.  I forget how long my backorders sat and I know some on here were on backorder longer than me.  Sure place backorder orders all the time for a few months that is great.

Along comes the DS, it runs out.  It runs out everywhere.  Even if resellers bought up all remaining stock everywhere which I do not believe the secondary market increased it from 400 to 600 in less than a week.  I think there is end user sales in that at a minimum.

So anyways it goes from available to call to check to sold out in less than a week.

But hey we have a large shipment due in the end of July.

Lets go ahead and mark it sold out and not take backorders even though a EEE of them is on the way and will be here at any time.

Also there will be plenty for the Christmas season.  So many we cannot see straight.  But lets let it stay sold out for now.

I do imagine some sort of refill is coming and it could be full strength but I tend to think something else is going on...

There could very well be a B&M restock coming, just as they did for 41999 and The Tumbler.  A few may trickle online, but they may only be widely available in stores.  Just speculating in the wrong thread. :)

I would certainly like to see this stay sold out indefinitely like everyone else. That is what I was told and usually the info I get from these guys is pretty spot on. As far as selling it for $600. If someone on CL is willing to buy it for $600.........done. As far as going through the trouble and fees of ebay for $600 Id rather just return it and get my $$ back, LOL

B&M will need to put something on the shelves where the new SW sets were...

I expect a restock, which will be a bummer, but I think it will probably be the last.  There are two superweapons in the new movie and I don't personally believe Lego will do a remake of the Death Star.

Then again, if Lego was a public company and I was a large shareholder, I'd probably be upset to see them retire this set.
