76013 - Batman: The Joker Steam Roller

I searched for a thread for this set but didn't see one. Mods, if I missed it then please feel free to combine them.

With the recent clearance of this set at Target and Walmart, and the varying opinions on it's potential value and seemingly over abundant supply (at Target at least), I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread to discuss.

Personally, I am a big believer in this set. It has five figs, four of which should be popular, a so-so bat-plane, and the very unique steam roller that the Joker drives. The steam roller is what caught my eye at first when this set was released. I think it fits the Joker to a tee, and I doubt we will ever see one again. This set should pair well with the funhouse and yet to be released joker land.

I currently have 27 of them all bought right around the current $35 clearance price, and the chance to buy several more. At 30% off I think this set is a no brainer, but the abundance of them at Target intrigues me. Why do they have so many, as compared to other retailers like walmart? My walmarts have been out of this set for awhile, but target keeps bringing them out to refill the shelf every time it's empty.

Since it appears that many of us are loaded up, this set may take awhile to see any solid gains, even if you are patient and roll the dice to try and score some at 50% off or more. Has anyone parted this set out with any consistent success? What are some other opinions on this set's potential?

I ended up with 55 of them. I'll start selling them 3-4 years from now. Until then, I'm on a ramen noodle diet.

  • comments about soooooo many people buying a set as a reason to not invest really make me scratch my head because its like you are saying the rest of the time when you buy a set, its your little secret

  • Just got 18 more. Up to 45. I'm all in on this set. I like it that much, especially at $25.

Yes, 1 Steam Roller occupies about as much space as 2x $40 sets.  We were looking for a gift for my nephew and actually compared a few options for that price range

I can't vouch for undercover boss, but here are 47 of my 55. His tower o' rollers should be twice as tall as mine if he has 100. I love this set at 50%.

I love this set at 50%.

As do I.  I don't think we're seeing this heavily stocked and quickly discounted at Target because it's a poor seller.  I think it's a timing issue and stock was late getting to the stores just like the Family House black friday promo.  I remember trying to find this at several stores when the minifigure cube came out and most were out of stock at the time.  The Steamroller is awesome and the minifigures are great!  I don't expect this to take off, but it should be easy to double your money once it's retired and gets back above MSRP.

Are people buying and holding 76103 until it retires?

Ebay prices are only $40-$45, not much profits after all the fees and shipping and cost even if you get it at $25 + tax.

That's the trouble with a widely discounted set. The QFLL's don't know what to do!!!!!!

Part it out, or hold on for the long run. Flipping this one right now doesn't make any sense.

The only logical thinking I can think of is holding off until Christmas and unloading it at $50-$55....if Lego still have it in stock or more if they are OOS.

What QFLL's mean?

Quick Flipping Low Life

Someone on here coined it to speak to the fact that high volume, low profit 'flipping' is generally looked down upon by society, and by the Brick Elite (only buy $150 + sets and sit on them for 3-10 years, the folks who say, "I don't bother with a transaction unless i clear $400 profit each", Selling on Craigslist is for plebeians, etc)

Still hangin' around (Kmart 5/5/15)... $39.

There are still a bunch of these at my local TRU stores. I think they'll be there for at least the next year or three at $55.

Its still readily available at TRU, LEGO, Walmart and others around RRP, and its only been out a little over a year.  The Target clearance was just them trying to offload a lot of stock that they didnt want on the books.  May have been intended for Chirstmas but didnt make it to the stores on time.  This one still likely has another 6-12 months at LEGO Shop at Home and TRU.

Still should do well in the long term, as long as it doesnt go the TRU "exclusive" route.  Its a great value even at RRP.  Throw some SYW discounts on that $39 and its still a great deal, many bought at Target at $35

A great value at RRP? I think you'd have to hold this one for 2-3 years in order to see just 50% growth over RRP. There are so many other better investments out there. I would still be buying them at 50% off though.

A great value at RRP for a buyer, not necessarily an investor but it has potential.  great ppp, 4 exclusive mini-figures (2 that dont appear anywhere else atm), and batman.

Pretty sure most of these were sold to forum members at $25.  That's what I paid for 16x of this set.  The 3 price points were 30-50-70% off.  At $37.50, few bought there.  Once they hit $25, most were cleared out.  I think a few very lucky forum members found a couple of sets at the 70% off price point, $17.

And these Jokers are going to start a factory and open retail outlets over there in 2017.

Maybe they will start caring about all of these bootleg sets being offered when it affects their retail store sales.

I dunno,if they continue to knock of 2 year old sets, I kind of doubt that LEGO will notice any decline in sales that they wouldn't attribute to market saturation.

Lego would be stupid to ignore it.

It's been like this for a while.  I've been seeing these Bela sets for at least 2-3 years now.

I bought a few of these from work i think the 5 minifigures will make it a fairly decent investment? Batgirl and a Joker, what do you think?

Its a cool set, but stores everywhere where stocked with it at $25, so if you got it for that price it probably will take a while for you to get a good return on it.

But in the long run it looks like a good set, most batman stuff does very well.
