Ideas #009: 21301 - Birds

Featured Replies

I only bought one Birds set, out of curiosity, and when I had just started my Lego investing buying-spree. In hindsight I think it would have been smart to buy some more during the last double VIP promo in October. But that ship has sailed, or rather, those birds have flow. ;)

soo question for my Euro bros and gal pals... All the Toys R Us's in my area are stocked full of lego Birds... If there is a 20% off coupon I can get them for 35$US.  Should I buy them all?

Very different situation there in the US compared to here. The Birds set was never sold in large retail stores in The Netherlands. Maybe some specialised 3rd party Lego stores had Birds in stock as a courtesy to their clients, but they had to buy them from Lego LEGO Shop at Home as well for retail price. It was never sold with a discount here.

Anyway, when I look at the box of the set, I think it's very presentable as a gift, especially to people who love nature and animals. And it's a nice way to get adults who forget all about Lego have their eyes opened (again) to the possibilities of Lego.

The price seems to be jumping on them. I can't find any at retail prices that ship to Australia, or are for sale in Australia.(at retail prices) . I only got 4.

I have seen them in small toy shops and a lot of Toyworld stores. That was a few weeks ago though and they might have been devoured by now

You still have a source where you could order them from? :P

I would say the best one - S&H Germany.. ;-)

That would make we wary about investing - this set has scarcity value more than anything. At 20% off. I´d get a few but not go crazy.

I assume you mean the Lego physical store? You're lucky if you have one nearby.

No, I think he means the Internet one. Max limit was 2 PER ORDER / Account and he is risking being ban hammered.

I thought when he said "Ordered 10 Birds yet... :-)" that he just now made that order, and I wondered how/where that would still be possible, since there is no "Add to bag" button on the Lego LEGO Shop at Home any longer.

No, I have ordered it via phone at S&H...

And no, I won't get banned becuse the order was entered by an employee and second because i have orderer a lot of unique sets in the last month.

I'm not such stupid to order every set ten times...

It's a cool little set. I've built it, and the birds are great to display and can easily be moved around on a bookshelf or something. Fun to build also.

If it's gone, I would think it should be hitting €100 by next November. Maybe sooner if it's not been hoarded too heavily.

The desirability of this set was well-discussed when it was released back in January.  I'm on the record here as saying this set may be one of the very few to hit 4-5x MSRP after retirement.  Single most important factor: more than any other set released in the last several years, this has massive NON-AFOL appeal.  Nearly all my and my wife's friends who saw this set went bonkers, especially the non-lego fans who wouldn't give a Star Wars or modular a second look.  Non-AFOL appeal means lots of gift sales and opened boxes, just the ticket for price appreciation.  Also, $150 for this set doesn't break the bank of adult gift givers.

It's small, easily displayed, has science and educational value, and looks just fantastic in the flesh.  For all these reasons, plus a short release life and non-hoarded status, I still predict 4-5x MSRP a few years after EOL.   Another clue: the 2014 Lego Employee exclusive - 4002014 - is a very similar set (5 birds).  It routinely sells in the $250 range.  Yes, it's rare.  Give 21301 a few years, it will match this, easily.  Final comment: if they ever release a v2 of this set with 3 new designs, the original will skyrocket.   4-5x MSRP will become 10-12x.

I have none but think I have time it is still everywhere at the moment

I retract my comments that all two members of the audobon society have two copies each and there is no demand

that being said I better fly to action

I better get up like the early bird to catch this set

this set will be a winner winner chicken dinner

put it with other ideas sets and they will be birds of a feather

if I was christopher cross I would ride like the wind

I have none will look to add some if I can so I will not be the lonely duckling

think you all will be happy if this sentence is the tail end of this post

I would just like you to know that I read that post with Garrison Keillor's voice in mind.  I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up reciting it here tomorrow.

Keep hyping it up. Then the horde will get it in their crosshairs. Then lego will make 100k more and it will be around until 2020

Cmon 10-12 times seems tooooo far fetched. If this thing hits 100 by next XMAS and 150US/EUR XMAS 2017 it will be nice, but not more in my opinion. You have to take into consideration that there are lot of bird watchers out there, but I guess not many are willing to pay more than 150US/EUR for a set like that.

But of course I hope for you, you are right. I got none and it will stay that way :jester:

10-12x? Uhh no. Not in our wildest dreams will it fly so high. Maybe 3-4x if they actually get around to Birds V2. I'll be happy with 3x as my buy in was relatively low since they've had these forever at RRP at TRU (wow, imagine that).

One thing I noticed that this set weighs a ton so it's going to cost a pretty penny to ship. I thought birds had hollow skeletons.
