I wonder if AFA is hesitant to say that it is the genuine thing. I am not implying that it is fake, but it seems like it would be hard to verify its authenticity since there isn't anything else to compare it to.

That is very true. One of a kind items are very hard to verify just because they are one of a kind. If they did try to verify the item, it would be very hard to do so. You would have to make sure that the mask is a certain weight. You would also have to check were they got it from. The second task would be very hard to do.
