We've been chipping away at building this for the past week or so and it's been great. It strikes a pretty good balance between standard pieces and bespoke pieces to make both an interesting build and a well-polished finished model: Too many bespoke pieces makes a build more boring (IMO) and using only standard pieces makes for a crude finished product. The number of stickers is insane but that's been discussed at length already.

We normally just stick to modulars and other buildings and this is the first vehicle we've done. It's been a nice change though because it involves a lot of Technic stuff and the build itself is much less straightforward and predictable as compared to a building. Does anyone have any recommendations for other sets that are similar that we should consider trying? Tumbler maybe?

Saw this pic on reddit today. Sure the DO isn't a huge modular or anything, but man the Slave I looks massive.

I finished building the 75060 UCS Slave 1 the other day.  Here's a quick size comparison between this set with the Hasbro POTF toy (uses the Kenner 1980 toy mold) and set 8097 from 2010.  A

If you like the technic stuff, I recently built the new AT-AT and it boggles the mind how designers come up with this stuff. End result is pretty amazing.

Yeah, throughout the Slave I build I was like, "How do they even BEGIN this design?" It's so incredibly complex. At least with something like a modular building you can break down the architectural features that you're going for and build it in bite size chunks but the Slave I has all kinds of crazy angles and studs facing in every direction.

Is it really that much different in build than 4483? I have 4483 packed away, and have yet to build 75054.

I think it's the case of lots of recent spaceships, no ?

I mean, lots of spaceships have to be built in some big steps (most of the time, as many as the number tagged on the bags).

If you do not connect them together (bag 1 with 2 with 3...) you can scratch you head but in the end, you realize the overall design once they are all put together.

Last time I had this "mind-f**k" was with the galaxy squad crawler (#70708): "is that the head ? the torso ?" and in the end, you just add some few pieces (legs, eyes) and... hey ! Here it is !

Cherry on the cake was to see its legs move... awesome.

Maybe you could try benny's spaceship... (big and cheap price)

If you're into star wars, according to Jangbricks, the new TIE Advanced Prototype (#75082) : "the entire build process was incredibly satisfiying and I felt like I was learning the entire time".

So it might worth take a look....

On a sidenote: I really am looking forward to get my hands on the TIE advanced prototype (75082)...

Just for my personal collection! There are so many cool new models that I really will have to spend quite some money on it!

After watching the video I would love to get at least 3 or 4 of them just for myself ^.^ After building one and having all the minifigs I bet you can make good use of the parts of the other ships just to build MOCs.

Also the AT-DP is one of those models were you just want to have at least 2 for your own collection ^.^

(Though I don't really like what they did to the "pilots" when it comes to their helmets).

I'm also really looking forward to finally buy and build a Slave I, but it'll take too much space (and time) for the moment so I'll just wait and buy other items that are pending on the "to buy" list for the reselling business...

I bet the UCS Imperial Shuttle and the UCS Slave I will look great if displayed together.

TIEs are usually fun builds, and the prototype definitely was. Reminded me of Vader's TIE Advanced (for obvious reasons). I'm looking forward to cracking into Slave 1 this summer when I have some spare time.

Are the TIE advanced prototype (75082) meant to be out on ebay already?! Seems they can be picked up for

42009 (Crane MkII)  is the mother of all technic sets.  An amazing, long, complex build.  2 gear boxes that switch between 5 functions.  You'll get to book 3 (out of six), and still wonder what the heck you're putting together.  Very sturdy final model, highly recommended.

Here's the thing. Personally, I hate the look of Technic sets. That's why I like the Slave I, because it's got a Technic "chassis" and the exterior is covered with nice smooth bricks and details. So I'm trying to guess at other big sets that would be similar, and I would think the Tumbler is probably like that?

Can't go wrong with the Tumbler, either.  Do try to find an assembled 42009 to see in person  I've yet to have a friend look at mine and not be completely blown away.  Captures the source material perfectly.

I went to the Lego store yesterday for the first time since before Christmas. They didn't have the Slave I on display then, but they did now. The ship is HUGE! I'll pick one up later since it's still newish.

As a new investor this set seems like a no-brainer, I've got 2 un-opened so far, do you guys think I should get more?

Sure but there is no hurry....it just got released. Focus on other sets that are closer EOL.

If you where asking this question in February of 2016 I would tell you that its a bit too early. This set is a great set of a great ship. There is no way it goes before mid to the end of 2016. go after sets closer to expected OEL (Red 5).

Is there an echo in here? ;)

If you're looking to load up, never too early to start.  Just know that money will be tied up for a long time.

Agreed.. There are much better options to put your $$ on atm that you might be able to cash out of before this thing goes EOL

Yes.... sell your all your possessions, your house, the clothes off your kids backs. Invest every spare cent you have into loading up on these immediately, don't waste a moment, rumour is EOL is nigh!

Why does Slave 1 not have a Disney Logo on the front of the box while the TIE Fighter has one?

Seriously I think because big businesses are slow and Disney had not had time to "perfect" amendments to the Lego contract and now that they have them in place voila a Disney logo.

timing likely.
