Still haven't broken the friends barrier. I just don't know if I can do it. I don't care what others think normally, but if I buy it, I will forever remember myself.

Only time I feel dumb is when there's a hot chick right behind me in the checkout line, but other than that... no.

 

I don't see anything wrong with that.  It's a great conversation starter.

 

Plus, there is no shame in buying Lego in bulk.

It was wierd at first (like a virgin ) but after that one starting purchase, you get used to it. My beginner Friends sets were three polybags, Olivia's Desk, Summer Picnic, and Ice Cream Stand. I'll always remember my firsts.

So minifigures are the little guys with the mosly yellow heads, and maxifigures are the ones like the Hulk that are oversized (According to Marvel's LEGO coverage at SDCC 2013 on youtube).

 

What are the Friends figures officially named?  They aren't either of those.

 

I seem to recall a very old people style LEGO created early on which had a different name too, but I can't think of it at the moment...

Minidolls are what most call them.

No real name for them. I think on most Lego forums they just call them Friends animals (opposed to normal animals, which aren't as cute/cartoonized).

Altough I'm not following the Friends sets, as an investor I was surprised by the fast growth of set 3187 Butterfly Beauty shop.
In your opinion which set will follow 3187 footsteps and make a decent growth?

- 3942 Dog show seems to be growing with a 87% CAGR in the US
- 3315 Olivia's House will also be picking up the pace.

 

But what about the other sets like 3185 and 3189 from 2012? Is there a future for those and other sets? Which one will you be investing?

I think the Dolphin Cruiser will be the one to have down the line.

Riding Camp and Olivia`s House I would say are the best now. Definitely Dolphin Cruiser down the line as well. I took a look at it last week in stores and wow, it`s pretty impressive. Now to wait another 1.5years to start buying haha.

That only means it's getting more popular.  I feel this line is unprecedented with Lego where you can roleplay with a specific settling for young females.  For boys with the city sets, you can roleplay with the firemen and police and other mundane town stuff.  The Friends sets are more exciting with the house, bakery, riding camp, and partying on the yacht.  Watch out Barbies.

This. First wave got that kind of CAGR due to their limited runs.  Now that TLG realize they have another gold mine in their hands, they will make sure supply matches the demands

Not a fan of the friends sets. I wouldnt want to be stuck with any if they don't go up in price.

I agree with lowillsw, these are great playsets. My sons have as much fun playing with these as my daughters. Fully 1/3 of our Lego playspace is filled with a Friends/city layout (including all the MOC's my kids have made). (The other 2/3 of table top space splits time b/t SW, LOTR/Hobbit, and Castle/Ninjago/POTC - in a house with 5 boys and 3 girls).

 

I have picked up a few sets as investments so far but I haven't seen many on clearance yet so I haven't jumped in with both feet.

Yes, the first wave will reach higher CAGR, but the big sets like the Cruiser should be also winners. I'm definately keeping my eye on them.

Do you think they will redo some of the early sets that disappeared, like Butterfly Beauty Shop?  I did think that Olivia's Treehouse was disappearing but now it is back everywhere, so maybe the popularity became apparent just before that got EOLed and they doubled up on it?

lol true. thought i've actually never seen anyone looking at the friends lego in stores...it's always busy in the regular lego section. just has me worried.

Not true here, my Walfart has a very picked over friends section...

I've been accumulating a few Friends set when I find them on clearance, I'll be interested to see how they do down the line. Worst case scenario, I know I can get my money back out of them as a set or in parts.

 

As a grown-up girl, I do have to say they are appealing to me and my younger self - they look like great fun to play with.

Worst case scenario for me is that they don't grow or lose money, but my daughter will get to play w/ them and her smile would more than make up for any lost $...not too worried either way. I'm long on Olivia's House, Dolphin Cruiser, some of the polys, and the exclusives.

I think those are some great choices, hepcatpunk.  OH and DC seem like no-brainers to me, and the residual haterade for the Friends theme will only be a boon to those who believe and invest.  I can see Friends performing similar to Ninjago, and possibly even better.
