Should I pick one of these up at $600 plus shipping? That is a lot for me right now.

Go get a Grand Emporium or 2 if SSD is too much. Most of us don't buy legos unless they are at retail or below. From my understanding GE is set to retire soon.

There is a moment where you have to let go. SSD is far from the only money maker. I wouldn't buy any more SSD going over 400

It would be put on a credit card. With 0% interest. And I would probably pay it all off within the next month to 6 weeks. So no, I don't have the extra cash laying around, but I can put it on a card and not have my power shut off or anything, I just wouldn't be able to buy any other sets for a bit and who knows what else awesome I might miss.

A Tumbler or Maersk Triple E on September 1st is a nice deal with the extra freebies from LEGO S@H.

received my stash of 10221. this time TRU surprised me. they all came in LEGO package. of course 2/box. all from 11/12. and i didn't bother checking the seal

 

the seal of 1 single looks like it 50R1. i would have preferred that they shipped my previous order like this as well...

The SSD will show gains immediately, while other sets will take longer...much longer in some cases.  If you are still paying your important bills, then maybe you could take a shot.

I think this is wrong advice. What if next month there is an accident with his car or any other financial problem. Don't think people should be advised to buy Lego on credit even if it would be a possible good deal.

my thinking is a little different, it got its retirement boost already. its going to hold here until the next boost which will be the new star war movies. am i totally off here?

I hear ya.  I came across a SSD this month, and picked it up. But it did blow my budget for the month.  It happens, though.

Price will continue to rise thru the holiday season IMO, granted not a dramatic one, but it will be there...

I don't think it will skyrocket, but it will definitely gain nicely over the holidays. Probably $800 by January 2015, though that estimate could be a bit conservative for some.

Oh ok, I misunderstood situation  then. Like Ed Mack said, it is a very good investment. If I say i'd never buy a set above retail, i'd be a hypocrite because I bought 2 rovers at 45

It's already 700 on ebay before Christmas rush

I think I would rather just get more R2s and other available UCS sets for now. If it drops because of a flood later I will look into it it, but otherwise I will move on.

This is a topic for another thread, but buying LEGO on credit is a viable practice...and actually smart at times.  Using someone else's money to buy an appreciating asset(especially when bought at a discount) works for many on this site.  You just have to be careful not to overextend one's self.

Yes, you are reading this correctly.  What's it at now?  $600 consistently?  I can see $800 by XMAS.  You might see slower appreciation after the first of the year, but this set will explode next XMAS.

You just have to be careful not to overextend one's self.

it has already touched $700 for some sales. over $650 consistently.

 

the wild card here is how many sets are currently held for resale perspective and their cost price. $399/set is a barrier to entry to lot of people and weaker hands will be off by oct . i think that's when target's 90 days expire right?

 

there are less than 10 listings in ebay. what happened? seems like we are running low on sellers!

I think there are two different LEGO secondary markets...The US market and everybody else.  The SSDs in Europe and the UK are not a consideration for US customers.  Taking into consideration the currency conversion, import fees and taxes and shipping costs, a SSD from overseas will be close to $700(US).
