Ok, we all wanted a Smaug, and we all wanted him to be big, I am not sure if the model they had at comic con is the final version or not but I assume it is. Has anyone else noticed that he is larger than any previous dragon from Lego?

I was playing around with my Nephew a few months back and he has the 2013 Dragon mountain as well as one of the Dino T Rex's and I noticed that the T Rex body was a LOT bigger than the dragons. I thought, "if they wanted to make Smaug right, they need to use the T Rex body piece instead of the tiny dragon one" it looks like Smaug not only has a modified T Rex body piece but larger, flexible wings as well, something else I thought would make Smaug work.

Even though we never got a fell beast from Lego, or the citadel guards or the million other things that they could have done that would have been great that they didn't, at least they chose not mess up Smaug, and I am thrilled about that!

For another thing, these large, rare animals tend to go up in value down the road, pretty substantially sometimes as we saw with the HP horntail.

  •   Of course it is still early (or not yet even) in the "EOL" stage for all sets in this theme but you are correct that overall it has not been too good investment-wise.   By CA

I'm planning to grab 10 myself. If I find more than that I will pick them up and offer them to other BP members at my cost + shipping if anyone is interested.

Interested!

I might be interested too depending on how much it costs to ship to canada!

Interested as well.

Hmm...thats my price point. I just want one. My Mother in Law lives near Meijer.

I could get her to toss that stuff into a box and send it.

Legodog if you could get me 2 id be down for it after everyone previously gets theirs of course.

All local lego stores should have this set at 20% off starting today. For sure I know my local store is. Seems crazy for lego stores to be putting a new set on such a discount already.

How do you know this? Is this a a nationwide sale?

I was told no over the phone. What store?

Edit. Just called again and was told yes. Employees don't seem aware of it until they ring it up.

Sacramento. They were putting out the tags when I came in. Maybe your store is out?

Is this a one day sale?

I just called my store.  The clerk said the sale will last through March 27, or until it's sold out.

Looks like this sale is going in Canada as well. Put a couple mountains on hold for tomorrow.

Well, they`re clearing out stock. (Thanks Captain Obvious). Buy it up folks! If you can score some with x2 VIP tomorrow, that`s even better.

Any theories on why these are being discounted? Are they likely to restock if they sell out?

I assume the sale is in store only?

My best guess is short production run, the Hobbit films are done, there seems little need to leave the sets lingering around the shelves. Ya it`s only been about 6 months, but in another 6 a reckon this one is gone, if not before then. What would be the point in keeping them around for a more traditional 1 year, or more, lifecycle? It`s possible, but this one hasn`t seen that much availability to begin with, not compared to most of the other Hobbit sets nevermind anything else. 20% off, plus x2 VIP is the time to buy, unless you can score even cheaper, but if you want this set I`d get it sooner rather than later, absolutely.

That said, maybe now Lego will re-release a gigantic pile of them to flood the market  :taunt:

Maybe I missed it but are you guys saying it's going on sale at the B&M lego stores in Canada with 2xVIP?

Confirmed, phoned my nearest Lego store. 20% off. Got a few hours on my timetable tomorrow so may stop by. $120 with $12 back plus 5%, delicious.

Stopped by and picked 2 up today. Debated waiting until VIP since it starts tomorrow but won't really have time until at least Monday to come back. Not really worth another $5 saved per set.

Lego really dropped the ball on these LOTR/Hobbit sets.  Too many facades when there were some epic moments they could have captured.  The best bets have been (and will be) the buildings - Unexpected Gathering and ToO.  I really think they missed out by not making an epic Bridge of Khazadum scene since they love dioramas in this line.  The Hobbit was even worse than the LOTR with these little half-built scenes...

I don't like this set other than Smaug, but its saving grace is the limited availability...it is tough to justify a $129 set having just 5 figs, even if it does have a big dragon..

Will pick up a few, but I feel there are better investments out there.

Now that I've said this, it will probably triple the year after EOL.
