Brick Classifieds - It's Your Store!!

So one thing Ed and I want to convey about Brick Classifieds is that... It is YOUR Store!!!  There will be a category structure that everyone follows and puts their items in, but overall it you will get to control many aspects of it.  It takes a little from eBay, a little from Bricklink/Brickowl, but still different.  Maybe like an Etsy but for LEGO.

Here are a few more features on how things will work or features that will be available to you.

1. Discounts and Promotions:  You will be able to run discounts and promotions on any aspect of your store.  Say you have a large inventory of #10179 MF and you want to unload a few.  You can specify a dollar or percent discount on that one product.  There will be a Promotions widget and links to view all vendors that are running specials.  You can run specials on the whole store, so if you say "oh screw it, I hate LEGO" and want to unload everything at 70% off, you can do that.  If you want to specify a special category, you can do that.  There are also quantity discounts.  If you say "Buy 5 Mr Golds, get the 6th FREE" you can do that as well :)    (Note, all these specials are things Ed talked about.  He is ready to unload   :) )

2. Buy from Multiple Vendors: You will have a cart.  You will be able to buy from multiple vendors in one shopping trip.  Buy 10 sets from Ed, Buy 50 from me, buy a few from TheOrkKing and screw it, buy a few minifigs from ComicBlast.  At the end you will get to select your shipping methods and see a grand total and pay once.

3. Instant Payouts: Ed and I are both fans of Paypal for its simplicity, security and options.  I really do not want to get involved with storing people's credit cards, going through PCI compliance and any other hassles involved with it.  The beauty of using Paypal is, it will allow us to do the multiple store checkout.  Once the payment is processed, each vendor will get paid their cut and start the transaction process.  Each person will be notified that they have an order and can start communicating and preparing their shipments.  Later when we start to include fees, the nice part for everyone is, is that all fees will be taken care of, right there at the transaction.  All sellers will get their money and we will get our commission.  It speeds up the process and we will not have to hire a hitman to collect for us.

4. Sell MOC designs/digital downloads: Those that don't care about buying and selling sets, but are builders and designers will have a category for yourself to showcase your designs and sell the instructions. Buyers will be able to pay for your instructions.  Once they pay, they will be able to get a download link to obtain the instructions and any other documents that you need to give.  Basically just ZIP everything up and upload to the system.  Everything else will be taken care of.

So there are a few more features, I hope this works for most of you.  I am sure everyone may not care or be happy. But I think most will be ok with it.

  • Well here is a quick update.  Ed and I are working through looking over the site right now together.  He is working on editing content about the rules of the site and FAQ type of questions.  I believe

  • Here is a look at the Vendor area for sellers.  Only sellers get access to this.

Sounds cool. :)

I had been toying with returning to the dinosaur ages and accepting checks/m.o.s, but not really sad to hear that won't be an option - PayPal makes my life easier.

BTW, I don't know why the basic smiley is sticking his tongue out :) but I have to remember not to use that here, I always feel like it looks like I'm being sarcastic when I'm not.  :turned:

Everything sounds awesome and I'm ready to try it!

One question - have you seen anything that would allow us to accept Dwolla as payment instead of paypal? I know the concept is the same and their fees are smaller - don't know about the store functionality though.

(Edit: I'm fine with paypal and not complaining.)

Sounds promising. How will search results be ranked? Will it be like Bricklink where the lowest price is at the top?

I think to start the Classifieds, we will keep it simple.  As the Classifieds develops and matures, there might be many additional options(including payment) added.

If someone has limited items for sale - say just 1 of something - does adding it to cart stop someone else buying it, if you are then browsing elsewhere for multiple vendors, or is it anyone's until it's actually paid for (could someone else buy it while it's sat in my basket?)

Well Dwolla doesn't support multi-checkout like Paypal.  When thinking about options, we said going this route:

1. Most people have Paypal

2. Most people trust Paypal

3. Multi seller cart/checkout

4. Commissions get paid at the time of sale

5. Keeps system simple and streamlined

6. Keeps things to one system structure for dealing with customer service, complaints.

Once we go outside of this.  It would be more like other system.  Waiting on payment, we have to chase fees, etc.   If this doesn't work, we can try something else.

Right now, by default it is set to newest first for those that might be looking for a set.  They search it wills how if anything is new.  But there button is there to sort by lowest or highest, etc.

Whoever gets to the finish line first wins.

In the earlier discussions about Brick Classifieds, I believe we were told that we could advertise our listings from other sites on BrickPicker. Does this idea still hold now? It sounds like now it is a more independant buying/selling tool, rather than a site that brings together lots of eBay, BL, and Amazon listings. Just want a clarification. Thanks!

At the moment...no. We feel many members charge too much on eBay and Amazon. We are hoping with lower fees, members will pass along some savings to buyers.

I think the ability of being able to buy from multiple vendors and selling MOC instructions are the biggest keypoints.

Darn, now that Jeff said it, I guess I have to sell something now. :blum:

If you type the smiley in your post like below it will come out as ^_^ which to me is the more 'classic' smiley.

It is! Slightly more demented in expression, maybe, but an vast improvement over the raspberrying goober I keep producing!

Great idea about taking the fee instantly. That helps tremendously in tracking profit.

Yes and one doesnt reinvest their sales to forget about a silly invoice at the end of.the month.
