  1. I'm not sure if the long gold pole things are even lego
  2. Thank you so much Phil B!! You are amazing! Especially for the tips on how to figure them out in the future. I've been sorting out a mostly Friends/Disney/Elves lot that was 50+ lbs and have been able to identify several hundred pattern/stickered pictures and am now down to the final couple of dozen with ones that haven't been identified through my other methods. I'm very excited to add your tips as I identify the rest. Thanks again!
  3. I've scrolled through hundreds of images on bricklink and brickowl and tried Google lense. Is there anything else I can try to identify future pieces?
  4. This year I bought two bulk lots of Friends (and other "girl" lego). They're all sets that I don't have in my collection as I've never collected those themes before. The last bulk set I bought was roughly 7 years ago. I have an almost 2 year old girl now and am throwing as many duplo at her as possible to encourage the love of lego. I figure she'll enjoy the Friends sets in the future. Between the two lots there may be a few duplicate sets, but I'm not sure if I'd sell or just save them for her to free play with. But I do try to complete sets in my collection with the idea that they may be sold in the future. I've completed maybe a dozen sets so far and there are definitely some frustrations, but I'm still enjoying the process overall. Not trying to keep up with extra pieces will make up for the frustration of having to purchase some pieces individually on bricklink in the future (I hope). Either way - I'm having fun!
  5. Thank you so much for all the great advice! I'm working on sets from a "Friends" lot. One particular set had a pair of gold binoculars in it. But it listed 2 additional pairs on bricklink's extra parts. I found 2 of the 3 but couldn't find the 3rd, went to my own collection and of course I only had standard gray binoculars. I found it frustrating to not complete a set when the only missing piece was an "extra". As a collector I've typically kept extra pieces with my sets, but other than potential complete resale I had no good reason for it, especially as the inventory in the actual books don't include the extra pieces. I think I'll save myself a lot of time by not doing the extra pieces anymore. Thanks again for all the advice!
  6. I'm rebuilding sets out of bulk lots I purchased this year use bricklink's inventory. I typically include the extra pieces in case I ever resell as I would consider that complete. But is it worth it? Should I just ditch including the extra pieces?
  7. I'm loving the colors too! At the very least we'll be able to build some very nicely colored creations in the future! Building cities was one of my favorite things to do as a kid and the Friends sets seem to be perfect for that
  8. A lot of these pieces I've never seen before so this should be pretty interesting!
  9. I based my values off of the recent sold listings (lower end) so it's like that the lot is worth well over 2k. There were several elves manuals but since I don't plan on reselling these sets it really doesn't matter. Just excited to add quite a bit to my collection and missing the brickfolio to be able to track that appropriately.
  10. I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right forum but I really wanted to share my recent find with some other Lego lovers. While on vacation visiting family I visited a kids consignment shop with my aunt. She noticed a huge container of lego and pointed it out. I talked to the staff and they were planning on sorting it out and selling it in a Facebook auction around Black Friday. They didn't seem willing to sell it that day so after buying other awesome stuff for my daughter we left. I thought about those lego for the next week and shortly before we left the state I gave the store a call and asked again if they'd be willing to sell it all at once. They agreed! I was able to get this lot for only $300! They're all "girl" lego like Disney, Elves and Friends. I haven't bought a bulk lot in roughly 7 years and didn't have any of these sets. There were around 17 lbs of manuals included which show over 80 sets. The rest of the lego weighs over 65 lbs and not pictured is roughly 4 lbs of megablock/off brand and other toys. There's over 50 complete minigures and pieces of a dozen more. From what I've priced out, the sets that the manuals include are valued at $1600 currently so even if I have to spend a few hundred in missing pieces I still got a great deal! I'm also pretty excited for my daughter to get to play with these one day (she's only 20 months so we're still in duplo for the moment). Some of the notable sets include the Frozen castle, Friends airplane, treehouse, camper and cruise boat.
  11. I'm currently sorting out 140 lbs of bulk lego. I'm sure I'll have plenty of leftovers I can't identify soon!
  12. My complete sets are in labeled ziploc bags, then stored in a trunk for easy access. My instructions are kept in binders and the boxes (I only have a few), are typically kept in closet storage where I don't need to get to them. Right now I'm only a small collector, so it works for me. But as my collection grows and I sell duplicates I have a feeling I'll need to re-organize everything to make it easier to find sets.
  13. Pretty awesome, though I wish the article gave more info. Like where his instructions will be posted, how you can donate, etc...
  14. Doesn't have to be pink/purple. Bright vibrant colors seem to be what attracts certain girls. The whole point is that Lego has created a line that attracts a certain type of child. Why not expand it?
  15. What I don't get is why people seem to think that this letter is going to change the way Lego thinks about its set design. They're still going to make everything they're making now and I doubt those particular sets will be changing to different colors. The only thing this might change is Lego ADDING more to their lines directed at girls. I can go to my local Target or Walmart and find an shelves full of Lego, but only a handful of sets that have any pink in them. For those with little girls out there, wouldn't it be nice to have more to choose from for them?
  16. Not all lego sets resemble real life. I seem to remember quite a few of the old space sets that had blue spacecrafts. Does NASA use blue spaceships? No. But it's a favorite color of boys and a little more fun/interchangeable than more grey, white and black pieces. With more girls being interested in Lego, why not have a purple ship? I wouldn't push for a pink Lego spaceship, but purple would be just as inaccurate as blue. I wouldn't expect large $100+ sets to be girl oriented either, but a series of smaller pink sets would make quite a few little girls happy. It's just another market available for Lego. Why not take advantage of it?
  17. I checked them out, but it appears that they're only on the West Coast (or at least their locations that ship to Canada). Thanks though! I hadn't heard of this company at all before now. If they spread out to my end it'll be worth it to check them out.
  18. I'm not shipping Lego, but I figure with the vast number of people shipping sets around the world that maybe there was someone out there that had sent a large package internationally and could give me some advice. It looks like UPS has the cheapest rate (a little over 200 for 5 boxes at 40 lbs each), but I've heard about some other places that may offer freight rates, like DHL. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
  19. It's been years since I've bought bulk lots and picked through them to complete sets, but I think that I used to focus on finding minifigures or unique pieces and using peeron to match them. Now there are so many more Lego sites out there that I'm wondering what other techniques are out there that I'm missing. I've noticed the forum for identifying pieces on this site, but hate to be posting multiple pieces a day (I'm expecting 140 lbs in this week pending some shipping issues). Regardless, it'll be interesting to see how others handle bulk lots!
  20. As a girl (though always a tomboy) I can understand the little girl's complaint. Sure, we can just put female minifigs in the castle and space sets and let them go on adventures. The hard part is keeping the "girly" aspects. I have a feeling this little girl wants girly adventures. For example, going to space in ships that are colorful pinks and purples. Some parts can easily be interchanged out, but some of the specialty curved pieces are only available in standard darker colors. I don't take think this letter should be taken as feminist or start a gender war, but merely to plant a few more ideas into the lego set designers to expand their audience. When I was little I think I had one "girl" lego set (the one with the horse transport and small stable) and I think I only got it because a family member noticed it was the only "girl" set on the shelf. It's great to see that lego has expanded to include girls more in the past 20 years, but it would be great if there were just as many girls into lego as boys. We'd probably see many more girls in engineering and other male dominated fields.
  21. I'm in Burlington, so not far away from you! Someone mentioned that the link didn't work, so here's one that hopefully will. I think there's some catch about having to have multiple videos up before they make it "easy" to find channels. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoaaUlOtgZoj23dQEV-aajg
  22. Hey everyone! I'm 26 years old and live in North Carolina. I had a nice sized Lego collection as a kid and rediscovered it in my teens/early 20's. I started organizing everything by piece, building and separating old sets, and expanding the collection with bulk lots from Ebay and Craigslist. I used sites like peeron to track everything and help me build over 100 sets with quite a few "in progress" missing a handful of pieces that I hope to run across some day. About 4 years ago, I rediscovered my pokemon card collection. Compared to lego sets, pokemon sets were much easier to collect and I put all of my energy into it, storing all of my legos in my parents basement (temperature controlled). I was able to complete a master english set as well as collect many promos and Japanese cards. I began selling off my extras, keeping only one of each card and somehow, I was able to "break even" recently. This was mostly thanks to a large YouTube following (TheCatsMeowth if anyone's interested). So I have a huge valuable collection that I essentially didn't have to pay for. I recently bought my first house and decided it was time to not only move the Lego collection over, but get back into collecting (though I will continue collecting Pokemon as well). I consider myself a set collector, though I don't care about boxes or manuals. if I have them, it's a bonus, but I'd rather have the actual lego set. After I built a set, I'd display it for a while, then take it apart, label it in a ziploc bag and store it. After my "break even" experience with Pokemon, I've considered trying to do the same with my Lego collection, though I don't think this is possible for me. Even if I have a duplicate set, I feel like I wouldn't want to part with it because the pieces could go to another set. Though perhaps as I build I'll change my mind as I build. I decided to start up a YouTube channel to share my collection with the world (many of my pokemon fans are also lego fans and had requested that I do something to show it off). I named it "Gotta Build 'em All" and while I will be focusing on actual lego sets, I would love to try and do some pokemon related stuff (mosaics, building various creatures, building scenes from the games/show). Unfortunately I'm not the most creative when it comes to designing Lego creations, but it seems like there are quite a few programs to help with this. Mostly I'll be doing time lapse builds while doing amateur reviews. There's not much on the channel now, but in case anyone is interested (feel free to critique once reviews/build actually go up), the link at the moment is: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoaaUIOtgZoj23dQEV-aajg My birthday's coming up, so I decided to treat myself to a bulk lot to kick off the new channel. Soon I'll be showing the scores from a 40 lb collection with over 100 minifigures! I'm really excited to be part of this site too! Identifying unique pieces can be fairly time consuming (and not as much fun as sorting or building), so I plan on utilizing that area of the forum quite a bit!
