  1. Lots of memories for me. My brother and I would always inhale dinner as the first one done and upstairs got to be player 1 and decide what game(s) were played that night. My parents recently retired / moved, which means we had to go through all our boxes of stuff that we still had at their house. I received the NES and the games. My initial thoughts on this set were meh, but after going through my games, I like this set more and more and think they could add so much to it such as Excitebike, Spyhunter (if they could change the scrolling), Castlevania, Megaman, etc. And for the math discussion...

  2. Yes, absolutely. Buy a hair dryer. It works wonders. You don't want a snooty Amazon or eBay buyer seeing that the set they just paid $200 for only cost you $14.98.

  4. I'm in the minority here. I don't see the appeal of this. Neat display piece I guess, but I'm just not feeling the same hype. I grew up in the '80s and still have my original NES hooked up and play it from time to time, so I understand the fandom. Anyone looking to spend that kind of dough on a NES Lego set would probably rather just buy a real NES that you can actually play. The reseller in me will probably buy a few just because, but I don't think I'll be loading up on these unless there is a steep discount. I think there are safer options at or below that price range to invest in. I'll enjoy watching from the sidelines.

  5. I built BricksWithWings' MOC of Buck Rogers Starfighter over the weekend. It's one of my favorite ships and brings back a lot of childhood memories. It's about 400 pieces. The instructions cost $4, and I sourced the bricks from my bulk bin and Bricklink. I spent less than $30. This is the first MOC I've built, and it really makes you appreciate Lego's instruction manuals and build process. Granted, they are a multi-million dollar company and it's unfair to compare them to a fan-designed instruction manual. Overall, I am happy with the build, and I even swooshed it around the house afterwards. The look on my teenage daughter's face was priceless. Side note: I didn't follow the instruction manual for the display stand and ended up building my own stand with bricks I had on hand.

  10. I think this is technically the right thread. I've been doing brick built stop-motion on TikTok lately. Finally built 31033 last night after having it sit in my backlog for years now. https://www.tiktok.com/@bradtrainer/video/6849302647225322757 Red Car from 31033: https://www.tiktok.com/@bradtrainer/video/6847094112550718725 Ideas Space Rocket Ride 40335: https://www.tiktok.com/@bradtrainer/video/6834348774924586245 White House 21006: https://www.tiktok.com/@bradtrainer/video/6835808934952045829

  11. Today it's nice to see that BrickPicker has achieved the milestone of hitting 100,000 registered users. Sure all of those members are not active, but regardless it's a nice achievement to hit, something Ed and I never would have thought would have hit years ago. New and better things are on the horizon, so stay tuned! Thank you for registering @lasloo!!!!!!!

  15. Reading on the other thread, I'll post here my .02c Someone mentioned taxes and me thinks that's part of the reason North Americans have so much purchasing power. I make around 42k pa but only take home around 29k. And that's a pretty good amount of money for my small European country. Another factor is that mostly everyone in here lives in apartments where they lack space to store lots of sets. Almost an anecdote, but I have a friend who lived and worked in England, Germany and in the US. To this day his biggest regret was to leave the land across the pond, where he said he made so much money that he didn't have time to pirate video games, he just bought them whenever he wanted. This was a shocker to me, as 20 years ago normal middle-class teenagers here would only buy one video game per year, usually at around Christmas. 20 years later and the most expensive LEGO sets cost more than what minimum wage workers bring home every month, so the gap is still there. Let's just imagine what South Americans and Africans have to save in order to buy a 600 dollar set. If on the other hand you look at Germany and UK, there's a lot more purchasing power than my small country, but still doesn't even come closer to the US, where sets are cheaper when you convert USD to EUR: a 100$ set is also usually 100 Euro, but 100 bucks are 89 EUR, thus making the difference even larger. So all in all, yes, low taxes and cheap credit paired with A LOT of land space make it the dream land for a LEGO reseller.

  16. One of the technic pieces from my childhood. I usually ended up using my teeth to pull out the 3749 (Axle Pin without Friction Ridges Lengthwise), still do so when I remove 8020 from the box to build it.

  20. I'm not sure that folks who are taking unemployment are the ones dropping big bucks on Lego sets. It's far more likely to be parents who are both employed and working from home, and need something to keep their kids occupied during the day. A lot of folks I know say that they've been buying Lego to help pass the time either for themselves or their kids...a few have even marveled at how expensive some sets have gotten.

  23. Pretty cool stuff. Jeff and I have really been blessed over the years to meet so many intelligent and generous people through the site. Brickpickers have helped keep my sons' school open with their generosity and their participation in the annual LEGO raffle and have taught me a lot about business and reselling. Writing two books , writing for BLOCKS and being in the USA Today was really special and it was because of YOU that we had the chance to do it. I feel bad not being more active as of late, but we are moving in the middle of a pandemic and it has sucked all the time and life from me. Hopefully, I can back to my life again in a few weeks after packing, inspections and paperwork is over. I'm excited by what Jeff has shown me with his new changes that are coming to the site that will simplify and improve many of our main features. Thanks again everyone! Ed Mack

  24. If they do any remake, I would hope it would actually be something like the Skylab launch pad. That would be the top 2/3 of the Saturn V but hopefully include the Launch Pad. That way we finally get a launch pad that we've always wanted for our Saturn Vs.

  27. I'm in the minority. I never got an NES but I did have a SNES, which I loved playing. I also played Super Mario Bros in the arcade religiously, but this set does nothing for me. I feel like the novelty of the scrolling scenes will wear off pretty quick. On the other hand, if they come out with more games/scenes, this set will do well, being the first.

  31. You must not have got an nes for Christmas in 86-88 it really was quite an experience and many of us gen x will have to have this for the nostalgia factor. You may not understand it but this is great and will take many people back to the 8 bit days of their childhoods spent playing Mario bro’s and duck hunt.

  32. I dont get the general idea behind this set: Essentially building a scaled-down version of something you already have at home (console + tv). I mean building with LEGO fundamentally is about recreating something you do NOT already have at home for real, like ISS, s apace rocket, a rollercoaster, expensive cars, a wrecked boat, a hospital and so forth. This NES set is the complete opposite of that idea, this might be the main reason why I dont get it that so many folks around here are going crazy about it. Isnt this just like building a LEGO mini-model of the laptop standing on your desk? I dont get it - whats the point of this?

  41. consumerism seems more part of US culture than other countries, prices tend to be cheaper to ship things across our country, I'm guessing perhaps more Americans have larger houses than the average European household so theres more room for non essentials. just some of thre factors I'd suspect, but I won't say any of those guesses are fact

  43. Seeing what ridiculous prices a lot of US buyers are willing to pay for all kinds of sets (even mediocre to bad ones), you get the impression that it nearly doesn't matter at all what you buy as a US-based investor, you'll make a profit anyway. Meanwhile, in the EU selling prices are much lower and rise significantly slower, so you really have to know what you are doing. How there can be such big differences in the buyers' general willingness to separate from their hard-earned money?

  44. I agree...and my boy doesn't have his own phone so the LAST thing I need is for him to have ANOTHER reason to ask for my phone...honestly every time he borrows my phone or tablet to do something legit...it always ends up with him moving on to gaming when I loose track of what he's doing. if its just LEGO bricks the worse thing he could do is set death traps for my bare feet.

  45. I don't know if I would say "every" set is a good seller. Not a single Hidden Side set is backordered. Several are even on sale at this time and still not sold out. Hidden Side Train has been 25% off for over a week at Target and you can still buy qty of 10 for shipping (https://www.target.com/p/lego-hidden-side-ghost-train-express-70424-augmented-reality-ar-toy-train-building-kit-697pc/-/A-75667055). Hidden Side reminds me of a sports study done in the USA many years ago trying to determine why inner city kids typically do not play baseball or hockey. It was determined it was the cost of equipment. Inner city kids were more likely to play basketball or soccer because all you needed was one kid with a ball and a hoop or target (goal). Hidden Side sets are nice, but unless your kids have access to devices, they're not able to play with it to its fullest. For those parents (like myself) whose kids already spend too much time on electronics, LEGO was supposed to be the escape from electronics. I have to admit, the videos advertising the Hidden Side actually turn me off. A group of kids standing around a LEGO set playing electronic devices? Kids are already doing that. Why would I need to buy a slightly more expensive LEGO set sitting in the middle of them not being played with?

  47. Hello, not long ago pulled my bricks out of storage to introduce the kids, they are hooked now! This reignited my own love for Lego. I have toyed with the idea of investing, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Still trying to learn the ropes.
