for cheapskates like me, I place a couple spent rolls of packing tape as supports between the scale and the box, and then zero/tare the scale. This gives me 3" of clearance or so and I can then see the scale reading.4 points
-
Do this long enough and you can guess package weights down to the ounce... that's reseller-loser-druid, level 6. God mode is wrapping all your ToyCentric packages with the free eBay shipping tape.4 points

Actually just got off the phone with LEGO customer service. Explained about the VIP points snafu, and that I was really hoping to grab one of these for my son since we missed out on the last one. Very nice rep named Eric is shipping us one for free...just because. How cool is that?4 points

In my opinion, a precise scale only matters if you are shipping a lot of light packages, less than 1 lb for cheaper USPS First Class package rates and generally less than 4 lbs for the general line separating USPS Priority Mail from being cheaper than FedEx/UPS Ground rates. Even USPS First Class rates are split every 4 oz but the differences can add up quickly for a lot of packages where 1 oz makes a difference (e.g. up to $0.92 between 12 and 13 oz on a $5 charge). For large packages the dimensional weight charge will outweigh the actual weight since LEGO boxes are a lot of air. For example, I sent Amazon a 22x16x16 package of small sets and the actual weight of the box was 23 lbs but the UPS dimensional weight ending up being a charge of 30 lbs so being precise to a 1/10 ounce makes no difference.3 points

We knew it was coming, but sigh, another "airport". It will undoubtedly do well once retired as all airports do, but for the love of all things holy when are we going to get an updated Farm theme??!?! Edit...that plane does look pretty sweet though. I'll stockpile those like I did the last two versions when they hit 30-40% off.3 points

No guarantee the price will come down and you won’t get around to building it anyway. Sell.3 points

My family is in the middle of this build and it's amazeballz the combination of rooms and details...can't take your eyes away..even half complete my 8 year old is filming a mini movie and story telling on it. I know it's actually a rehash of past sets and in that case, many may view it as a copycat frenkenstein...but this being our first modular, it was a great intro. They packed so much into one set...the only thing that rivals it is obviously Ninjago City...which btw way has almost doubled in price since retiring 4 months ago.2 points
-
USED Ninjago City $350, plus $20 ship 2 months ago and 1 hour drive each way, I originally got 3 sets used as a lot for $275: Ninjago City, Parisian Restaurant, and Destiny's Bounty (the recent big boat); all three I wanted for personal build and since they were used, it wouldn't tempt me to sell. Now it looks like all three may go on the auction block.2 points

Are you taking the sets into the bathroom, or did you bring the bathroom to them?2 points

either that, or I've sold out of all the trending items... I haven't decided which yet. I do expect it to wind down once retail stores are open again, and then another bump down when Amazon returns to somewhat 'normal'.2 points

Just sold my last Old fishing store for $400US. Buyin was $130, fees/shipping were $46. What a crazy world we live in right now!2 points

Materials guide for LEGO selling & shipping Many members have asked for a centralized place where they can go for shipping box information. I'm going to pin this post and update it as new information is provided. I just want to take a few minutes and thank those who wrote the following articles. They are still very good reference materials for the LEGO storage and shipping process. I may develop this into a blog article eventually. Fcbarcelona101's : Selling LEGO : Basic Materials Guide Mos Eisley 's : LEGO Storage Wars Incompetech's Catalog of Amazon.com Box Sizes - (thanks No More Monkeys) Amazon Boxes Sorted list by length - courtesy of pstebbing I've scoured the forums and here is a list of box sizes with basic set information: Boxes: 24x20x8 : Super Star Destroyer; Death Star, Roller Coaster, UCS Sandcrawler, Assembly Square 24x20x6 : Thicker sets like Town Hall, Tower Bridge 24x16x6 - 60052 Cargo Train, R2-D2, Maersk Line Triple-E, 7939 Cargo Train 24x16x4 - Helm's Deep, Vampyre Castle, Black Pearl, Friends Riding Camp, Parisian Restaurant, High Speed Passenger Train, Jabba's Palace, Downtown Diner 24x20x4 : Grand Emporium, Pet Shop, Imperial Shuttle, Haunted House, Palace Cinema, Fire Brigade 24x14x4 : Dolphin Cruiser, Coast Guard Patrol 24x4x12 - Dolphin Cruiser, Coast Guard Patrol 20x16x4 - Volkswagen Camper Van, Olivia's House, Sonic Raider, Sopwith, Creator Bike Shop, Batcave, Quinjet, Moria & Ambush 20x16x6 : Thicker sets like the Republic Gunship; City Cargo Plane 20x14x4 : Attack on Weathertop, Hulk 's Helicarrier Breakout, X-Wing 9493, Black Gate 16x16x4 : Gungan Sub, Pre Viszla, Tie Fighter 16x10x4 : Council of Elrond, Desert Skiff, City Grand Prix Truck 16x10x6 : Thicker sets like Creator Family House, Hillside House 15x12x4 : Funhouse, Orc Forge, Tumbler Chase, Daily Bugle Showdown, Hulk Lab Smash 12x12x4 : Uruk Hai Army, City Cargo Truck, Creator Treehouse, City Fire Emergency 11-3/4x8-3/4x4-3/4 : Wolverine Chopper, Arctic Batman, Power Armor Lex, Droid Escape, Cloud Cuckoo Palace 12x8x3 - Battle Packs, CA Avenging Cycle, Catwoman, Gandalf Arrives, Holiday sets 10x8x4 : Battle Packs, CA Avenging Cycle, Catwoman, Gandalf Arrives, Holiday sets Envelopes: 4x8 : Minifigs & small polybags 6x9 : Polybags small & larger 10.5 x 16 : Larger shipments of 3 x polybags or more Packing Tape : buy in bulk or on sale : you can throw some in during a Staples coupon promotion to get up to free shipping Walmart.com Duck Brand Packaging Tape http://www.staples.com/Staples-Standard-Grade-Packaging-Tape-Clear-189-x-110-yds-6-Rolls/product_380107 Retailers: Uline.com : holiday sale starts first part of November (usually 30% off) Staples.com : use coupon promotions - $10 off $30, $20 off $75, free shipping over $60 Walmart.com USPS Priority Mail (free boxes at USPS.com) Michigan Box Company: Flat Boxes 18"-23" L (thanks pstebbing) GBE Packaging (thanks pstebbing) PackingSupplies.com http://www.packaging...ated_boxes.html (thanks pstebbing) Bubble Wrap: 3/16" thick x 350' ft x 12" wide - eBay Sams Club 3/16" - 12"x240' $12.98 (In store) ($.05/LF) (thanks pstebbing) I like to use large and small retailer plastic bags to wrap items in, even after I bubble wrap it. For battle packs and even small sets, I sometimes use Wal-Mart, Target, or plastic bags from any store. Additional packing isn 't really needed. Usually like 2 bags on bottom, one to wrap the item, and two bags on top. Make sure to cover the corners of the item real nice to provide extra padding. Rule of thumb : ship & pack all of your items the same way you 'd like to receive items you've purchased. Hello New BrickPicker members and forum users... Due to spammers, jerks and bots that attack the site and forum constantly, we have implemented a 20 Post Approval System for new members and forums users. Each of your first 20 posts needs to be approved and content checked by Admins/Mods. After the Admins or Mods approve 20 of your posts, you will no longer need to get approval to post. We constantly check for new posts, but we apologize if there is a slight delay for post approval. Thanks...Ed Mack1 point

I use my bathroom scales for large packages in 2 steps: 1. Weigh myself without the package 2. Weigh myself holding the package Subtract 1 from 2 and there is your package weight. Downside: A painful reminder of my own weight.....1 point

I, on the other hand, was happy to unload my last 10188 Death Star locally to a fellow AFOL who has a 4yo kid that loves minifigures. Sold it for $420. Could've probably gotten more on eBay but it felt good to help a fellow fan out during SIP.1 point

Mickey Mouse BH purchased for $2 BN online clearance sold on eBay for $49. Still have 2 left. I have been selling a lot of brickheadz and Nexo that I got from my TRU going out of business sale (which was around a year before the entire company went under) for 70-90% off.1 point

Buy your shipping labels from PayPal or Ebay, they are cheaper than USPS retail. Don't guess at the weight, buy a $20 package scale from Amazon and a tape measure to measure your box size.1 point

Don't push the deadline. I know you are worried about the small amount of donations so far but just relax. Everybody tends to donate towards the end so by pushing it farther and farther back more people are forgetting about it and not donating. If you keep pushing the deadline back then everyone that donates at the end will wait even longer. It's a lose-lose. Take a breath and realize that the Brickpicker community is giving all they can and pushing the deadline won't change that. Besides you can always hold another raffle in December, when you stock up on Black Friday deals.1 point

We have worked our way to the 2nd floor of Assembly Square modular. what's special about THIS particular build is the boy and I finally got "mommy" into a LEGO build...I was able to entice her with one of the spaces being her occupation...and that we can display the model at her office. "Come to the Dark Side!" MUUAAAHHAHAHA1 point

Yesterday I built the 75094 Imperial Shuttle Tydirium set I originally bought to resell but decided to keep it instead because it is an excellent set and is my favorite ship from the original Star Wars trilogy. Exciter1 gave me a $10 Kmart coupon shortly after I joined this site to help me save a little bit more on it, I will never forget his kindness and him doing that The minifigures lined up for a class picture of sorts and the white bricks really glimmer. I am definitely displaying this one in a room out of natural light to keep the bricks nice and white. My only minor complaint is the use of the rather flat Trans-Black Windscreen 1 x 6 x 3 instead of more a curved one. My ultimate goal is finding a deal on the 10212 UCS Imperial Shuttle and I can hopefully find a score like Brickvoyeur did a year or two ago!1 point

We built a Welcome to Apocalypseburg last week, and then Pirates of Barracuda Bay this week on the same table... No comparison... $100 difference in RRP, and Pirates is the sameish size, and SO MUCH BETTER. Best set since Old Fishing Store.1 point
