The remaking of the UCS sets is bad for all LEGO investors. The impact is not only on the original sets that are remade, but on the line overall. Most buyers of the high flyers are speculators, who after getting burned (multiple times now) will certainly learn to avoid getting burnt again. Even the wealthy LEGO collectors (who aren't buying for investment, but for enjoyment) would certainly prefer to avoid making unwise purchases (this is usually a trait which helps to create that wealth). Although it doesn't alter your thought process or methods on investing, it probably should. I know you buy and buy, and do not sell - you have faith in the overall LEGO valuation continuing to rise (which is reasonable to believe). One day when you sell, you will be pleased with the results. Happy to have avoided all the good/bad investing decisions. But you are an exception - most investors need to understand that these re-releases are relevant, and should have an impact on how one chooses to invest. They are relevant and they don't help values long term, I agree. I am also a realist and realize their is a ceiling for many of these sets. Obviously, I am the "whale" collector that likes to stockpile all sorts of sets. My Brickfoilio is widely varied and I have many TMNTs, Lone Ranger, Prince of Persia, Atlantis and other subpar performers because I like the sets. I have all the older UCS sets, but I really don't care because they are keepers to me anyway. I have a few duplicates, but most I have a built copy and a sealed copy. I don't have 10 or 20 of a set like that. Only recently have I been stockpiling sets, but now I have shifted back to my original plan of buying one to build and one or two to save. I buy all themes and intriguing sets from those themes. Yes, the new STAR WARS movies are both a blessing and a curse for LEGO collecting, but as always, pick the right sets and they will appreciate well. The market is still strong, but no way as easy as it once was. But I build a set everyday with my son and see his reaction and my own and realize this is no commodity. It's the best damn toy ever created and there will always be people like myself wanting them all.7 points

To be fair, the UCS snowspeeder was released over a decade ago. Considering how rare it is by now, it might as well have never existed as far as many people are concerned. And they have put out some good new UCS sets recently, like the Slave I.7 points

If we have to rely on Lego Movies to showcase stuff then we are all in trouble! Ciglione will no doubt be praying for a time travel scene where Benny travels to the Wild West and meets the Lone Ranger then goes forward to drive a Unimog through the wall of Arkham Asylum.4 points

patience will be rewarded with this set. its been gone barely a year. there is bp blog article discussing an established pattern of modulars and other large exclusive's taking a price hit at this time of the year when resellers come out of hibernation. there is no doubt that influx of sellers will stretch out the x axis on the growth curve. still, at some point, you get to the seller's market where the people holding don't have to sell, and have figured out how much they want and are willing to wait it out. the seller's market is when there is significant price appreciation in a short amount of time. there will be a market for this set and there will be people paying top dollar. you have to ask yourself are you willing to wait it out and is it worth it to get to goal. given the remarkably short run of this set and sudden disappearance, the answer for me is yes. this recent trend points out that its not always up and to the right and there is likely a seasonal seller bubble more than accomodating any seasonal uptick in demand of what is still going to be a limited demand. only so many folks shelling out hundreds for a lego set. some folks have to sell. the price goes down. no discussion of a bubble over in the taj mahal thread. it will be interesting to see how TH is doing in 2018 when I would imagine we are getting into the seller market phase.2 points

Disappointing that LEGO cannot come up with new and unique UCS sets without rehashing old versions that were done quite well. There are plenty of different vehicles and characters they can be recreated in ABS plastic without having to resort to duplicating retired sets.2 points

That are alot of UCS sets coming next year than. Wonder which other UCS set will be sacrificed. So... 10188 DS for the new DS. Hoth Base for Ewok Village. Snowspeeder for Red-5?2 points

Inventory placement service is going to increase your per-item fulfillment cost by whatever the rate is - $.50, maybe? It's something you can turn on and off once you know where the setting is; it might be worth using inventory placement if you want to send them 80 of one set in a single box. CA to Jersey might make it for the last little bit of the holiday window. Ship Monday, could arrive Friday (and if it doesn't maybe get backorder status with Prime shipping just in time for Christmas). I wouldn't count on it but you could get lucky. And while sales drop precipitously right after the Christmas deadline, in my experience they don't absolutely crater until after the new year.2 points

They get distributed all over the country unless you sign up for their placement service ( additional fees included ). And no, you can't just drop it off at your local warehouse .2 points
-
You cannot drop them off. You will ship your product where Amazon chooses you to ship them. After a while you will notice a pattern for the shipping plan destination based on number of units, time of day, time of year and a few other settings so you can more easily get a fulfillment center close by and not a distribution center. Some distribution centers you will want to avoid at all cost. Good news is you can always delete a shipping plan before approving it if you don't like what warehouses they are giving you. After approving a shipment you will want to make sure not to cancel as more than a few of those will get you suspended.2 points

Yesterday morning I saw that AT-ATs are going for a lot on eBay. Probably because they are nowhere to be found in stores. Listed one for $170, sold in 3 hours. Relisted another one at $185 this morning, sold in two hours. I'm pretty sure I wasn't the lowest price on either of these. Decided to relist another at $250 and see if anybody takes the bait.2 points

Prices are crashing on ebay. Couple went in the 30's. Makes sense considering folks are still receiving these in the mail and apparently some are still finding them in lego shops. Almost worth buying on ebay to sell on amazon1 point

I"m wondering if Star Wars is just sucking people's attention right now, and so the modulars are taking a backseat. Give it another year or so, and if the new lego movie does showcase modular buildings again, which isn't a farfetched idea then I think you'll see a spike again. But, I do think a lot of attention from AFOL's wallets is on star wars. I don't think it's all doom and gloom, fellas.1 point

Well, I just took advantage of that 2xVIP and bought another DS. I figure, why not. Now, I sit at 2 (yes, nothing compared to some people)… none of which are opened, and i'm not opening any until the new one comes out. Then I'll make the call to either open one of these, or buy the new one and hold these as investment sets. I've sort of convinced myself that the new death star will not be like this one, and since this one is VERY MUCH as OT as it gets, it might do just fine and not be as vastly affected by the new one. Just watching the 2014 sets fly out of the gate was all it took to convince me. Heck, even that UCS DS2 model, which I think is kind of boring is now sitting for 2700 on amazon, and that one has nothing really to it. So, we've already seen what happens when another DS is in the mix. They end up going into the thousands when they retire.1 point

I'm wagering (with investment dollars) that the markets will align on retired architecture sets within 4-6 months, max. Hopefully...1 point

I think it's set in stone that this is the giant flagship set for Rogue 1. Considering that entire movie is based on the Death Star, I think there is a very big chance that this is the premiere set that will be available on Force Friday next september when they release the initial bunch of figures and sets for the movie. If next weeks film is as good as I suspect, then I suspect star wars mania will be in hyperdrive over next year (yes, I'm now even convinced that the original death star is setting at the optimal time - right when a large % of people on the planet are going to be into star wars thanks to a new wave of movies). So, I think there will be a nice spike. This movie hysteria has created a demand for Star Wars products. Traditionally, most of the sets that are retiring at the moment would not be nearly as high right out of the gates if it wasn't for this demand. That's why we've already seen 195.00 At-At's, 60.00 jedi interceptors, and 185.00 for ISD's only a week after they became scarce. If this was 2013 or last year, that would not have happened like that. So, I suspect, if people play their cards right they could make some money on their death stars. Just hope that the new one is based on Rogue One, and not some minor update of the old one.1 point

I would buy some Imperial Hotels. The FLW buildings are doing well recently and I don't think this would be an exception. The sorry Guggenheim I bought less than 2 years ago for €20 is going around €100. Imperial will do nicely in my opinion.1 point

This. The piece count will drop and the minifigures will be updated but the detail and functionality will be improved. This is for a new generation of buyers but Lego will assume that a good chunk of the 10188 owners will get the new one as well. The new one will not be tied to the new movies. Disney and Lego know how insanely popular the original trilogy is to both young and old fans alike, and both companies are in the business of making money. They won't risk a $350 to $450 set on the new films just yet. Do you see Lego basing the Ghostbusters Headquarters on the new films? Uhh, that's a no. Same with the DS.1 point
-
I think main target are not the people who already have one. On the same basis why not retire 10188 after just 2 years because people already had it? New buyers were always coming, kids reaching the age where they can build one. If they could sell a Death Star for 8 years they will be able to sell it for another 8. Most exclusives are mainly bought by collectors, but I always thought DS is different. If it was sought after mainly by collectors then it would have been discontinued ages ago.1 point

10188 is a great set to own if you are even a seldom lego builder. let's not forgot that. regardless of profits, lego sets are meant to be built.1 point
