  1. Lets elaborate on that "sell it now and buy another set who can do X2 in a year". Maybe if you had an insight into retiring sets or were just plain psychic I would say this is a perfect philosophy, however you're point is flawed. I am sitting on a huge stash of T1 Campervans that I was convinced were going last year or this. I have Tower Bridges, Ecto-1's, Pet Shops, Brick Bountys, all sets that I was convinced were retiring soon and look how that's turning out. Predicting retirements is difficult and selling a set that to just rinse and repeat is going to get your fingers burnt soon enough. Over the last two years I watched numerous sets that I've sold rise in value while the sets I replaced them with sit stagnant in my loft. One more thing. Very very few sets double in price after one year. Plus when you factor in tax, eBay fees, Paypal fees most good sets will only return 25-50% max after 12 months of retiring. For every 1 successful set its very easy to invest into 4 poor performers.

  3. The rumors are true. Picked up my first ever friends lego set at ross, dolphin cruiser for 44.99. I like this ship and i liked the price. It was also worth it just to see my son stare at me with a look of disbelief as i paid for it. He made a couple loud comments about not wanting a girls set in front of some women but then in the car away from any girls, he says "i think i want to build this ship, it looks pretty cool". 8. Waiting is not fun so many will dump this set early and move on to PS, Red 5, ToO, DS etc. No risk of hundreds of offers for TH, while it is guaranteed for the 2015 sets. Changing market conditions and changing production policy has added a ton of value to the already retired sets. Once the number of offers dips below that critical point you are going to see $100 jumps quite quickly on this set IMO. I don;t believe we are too far from that tipping point and this time next year things will look alot more interesting.

  12. Funny to read all the butthurt in the comment section. What's funny is I would bet nearly every Lego "collector" has sold something on ebay/CL/Amazon, what have you, and made money on it. Then talk out the other side of their mouth and claim resellers are the devil.

  17. These went quick in-store as well... I pass 4 walmarts on the way home from the office, the first 3 stops had none whatsoever (& these were the usually less trafficked ones) in the 3rd I happened upon the stock clerk in the toy section restocking the endcap with the Duplo boxes & she said they sold 60 boxes of the classic in the first couple hours the store opened, there was a line up at the door before they opened! (they're already on local kijiji at $65) the last store on the way was the fancy new superstore which is always the busy one, so I wasn't even gonna bother but in the excitement of the quest I forgot to get cat food so stopped by anyway - they had just rolled out a fresh new pallet full - in the food section! as there wasn't any more room next to the toys. (I bought the kitties the slightly higher end tins this week :-) btw - a little bird told me there are 2 pallets to each store per Wednesday truck, 2 trucks during the pre-black Friday sale - so the next restock will be next Wednesday over-night... just say'n

  18. Great article. Please take 2 minutes and read it. But if you're lazy, it basically suggests that many investors expect prices to peak in December, when in fact they often decline. It is theorized that too many sellers, hoping for December gains, put their product out there, and increased supply leads to lower prices. I actually saw this play out last month for the 10228 Haunted House. I thought October would be the perfect time to take some profit on one of mine. Ebay prices in September were around $445. So I put mine up for sale in the beginning of October, and what-do-you-know... a lot of folks had the same idea, and prices dropped almost 10%.

  22. I think that price is only pulling up three bulk listings on eBay which is skewing the result/value. There are currently 100 listings on eBay. via brick fan: Update: I’ve been told the street date for the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Hulk (5003048) is December 6, 2015.

  24. Thousand piece AT-AT set releases are on a fairly consistent 3-4 year cycle. 2003-2007-2010-2014. http://www.brickpicker.com/bpms/search.cfm?searchterm=AT-AT 2017 would be the earliest we "should" see another release and with the new movies coming out maybe they give the old sets a little longer time out to pasture. This set is second largest AT-AT and only 1 piece smaller than the motorized AT-AT by piece count. Given the upcoming movie release schedule, if we get lucky with no new AT-AT until 2018, 75054 should do pretty well. Wild card is if we get a UCS AT-AT which i kind of am hoping for. I have 10 to sell before xmas 2017. I wish i had 5 more but i'm saving up for black friday brick towers.

  25. There are ups and downs in any marketplace. In the LEGO secondary market, prices on the whole, usually rise in the Fall and early Winter and drop after the New Year. My theory on why some large and expensive exclusives drop when they should be rising is based on the new wave of resellers. This is a newer phenomena. Year ago, almost all LEGO sets would rise though the Holiday season, but I believe now the current makeup of resellers is to flip for quick profits, instead of holding for long term gain. Many new resellers get anxious holding a set past a year, so they sell these big sets that they made some quick money on to lock up profits. Over time, after more exclusives are resold, the prices continue to increase at a solid pace. If people would just look at the history of some of the current $1000 sets out there, you would see it was a slow climb for the most part, over yearS, not months. People selling their Town Halls right now is understandable, but my sets increase in value long term with each early sale so I really won't complain.

  26. Retired modulars are for adult collectors. They shouldn't be so season sensitive unless it's a surprise Christmas gift. If I want a retired item, I buy it, no matter what date of the year; The reason for more listings could be finance: investors locking in profits (smaller than should be) to reinvest in 'better' sets. Or just cash- constrained investors looking for some breathing space. Selling TH (or HH, FB etc) is exactly what you shouldn't do, unless you're afraid of remakes. The larger the lego community, the better the retired classics will do. Last thing on my mind, is to sell my best sets to reinvest in popular (maybe never retiring) current items... FBarcelona has written excellent articles on the timing to resell top sets. I suggest everybody to look them up. Take care

  27. Bought another one of the Vader/Luke Buildable Figure Combo Packs today at TRU and got the two free polys (C3PO and Space Vehicle). Trying to spend the minimum to get the free polys---time will tell if the Vader/Luke is a good choice. I'm not sold one way or the other. Oh, and found a Gallimimus poly buried in the Space Vehicle bin....$3.05 after discounts.

  33. Yeah... many VW car dealers gave this set away when you bought a new VW. I suppose sales have plummeted so they sell the legosets. At least these will sell. They do not have any sneaky software in them I believe.

  34. You can tell who the flippers are when they talk about Sydney Opera House being a slow seller post retirement. I'm sure Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal and Statue of Liberty were slow sellers as well when in production. Landmark sets are timeless, that in itself should tell you it's always going to be collectible.

  36. I might be temted by a SOH, even though it's not clear how well it will sell in the after market. Anybody willing to share? Sales data seem weak (Australia/Asia/tourist interest? Too large? Not very attractive as a showpiece?) EV and MC seem like too early to retire... Box redesign? If EV would leave, that would be excellent news though

  38. Priceless. My 9 year old son won't touch Friends with a 9 foot pole either, but he is happy wearing pink and claiming it as one of a few favorite colors, because "it's boss." BCA + Football for a few seasons has no doubt encouraged his "metro" attitude, in admirably ironic fashion. On topic, 2 IR at TRU, $100 + tax and struggle to get ANY free poly with the space cadets working there these days. Appropriately, they would only offer me the space utility vehicle.
