  1. ok. maybe its just me and i have star wars on the brain but i took a picture of this cloud the other day... dum dum da-dum dum da-dum dum da-dum.
  2. These don't have to be huge articles. Maybe a monthly 300 word blog about why one shouldn't invest in LEGO bricks. It would be a huge lightning rod and interesting conversation starter. Negative commentary is welcome as long as it is in good taste and respectful of others. LEGO investing is not for everyone and their should be an opposing view to all the "RA RA" dialog on the site. I even have a name for your blog...MR.SUNSHINE'S ANTI LEGO INVESTING BLOG...LOL

This could have gone in about 5 different threads, but ultimately, it's an MOC, so it belongs here. Credit to PaddyBricksplitter
  9. You should read the book. Ed covers this in there
  10. Actually, once I'm done with the article I'm currently working on I might give writing a "Dangers" of LEGO investing type article. Actually a good idea.
  11. I guess the main thing I discovered when writing the book was that there are plenty of themes that appreciate very well and are never discussed. I knew most, but some themes really surprised me. As for the "Stormtrooper by the urinal" thing, that will be book number two. We will be giving members a chance to get heavily involved on the creative and visual side of things with this next book. We are finalizing the contract now with the publisher.
  12. The reality is that a) some people spend far too much time searching on eBay and b ) others exaggerate how good the deals are... but general hints are: - look for common spelling errors (millenium vs millennium) - mis-categorized items - learn to use the advanced search features to group words and exclude words - and most of all, don't trust eBay's search feature since it uses a highly complex and unpublished sorting algorithm .. there are services out there that will search eBay's listings for you based on criteria you set and they'll do the search all day long (sometimes up to every 30 seconds) looking for matches. People don't like to give too many hints about how they go about searching for the deals... using an automated service or writing their own scripts to monitor eBay and other retailer websites (or paying someone to write them) is a lot more popular than people think.
  13. you all better study. this will be on the cyber monday test trivia.

The Ultimate 42009 is by far the most complicated build I have ever done. The creator of this moc is Jurgen Krooshoop and he did a fantastic job. It is an expensive build with all the PF's. It has eight motors and two battery boxes. In the near future, I will also be taking apart the 8043 and building his ultimate version of that model as well.
  15. People should also realize that good things can happen if a person writes well and starts producing content. It's not only good for the site, but good for them as well. You never know when someone will come knocking asking you to write a book. If Jeff and I can do it, many of you can as well. I think Jeff also forgot to mention we are willing to pay for quality content. It's something that has to be figured out, but we can discuss that with interested parties.
  16. It is very cool seeing this with other people. It's a great feeling knowing it's been released out in the wild
  17. I tried my best here. I am NOT a PS expert. I used Paint!
  18. Finally got that sweet smile and wink to work today. Ended up with a free Bat after the manager scanned a $15 off coupon under the register. She simply smiled and said "I made it work."
  19. Why don't you write something about the pitfalls of LEGO investing? We are not asking for people to give up secrets. We are looking for ALL SORTS OF CONTENT. News, reviews, videos, analysis...whatever. Here is a chance to be heard and to impress others. It's easy to post stuff on forums. It's much harder to present it in a formal manner that can be scrutinized and/or enjoyed by thousands of people. Like Jeff said, people can use it as a way to promote their own endeavors.
  20. Picked up a MF at my local TRU yesterday... Used 20% off combined with 15% off gift cards I bought on eBay to get it for a total of $98 before taxes and rewards... +3p0
  21. The news posts from other sites will be removed from the home page totally. I will keep the feed going in the news section, but will probably block it from being crawled by search engines.
  22. At first I still could resist the urge... but finally it has been stronger... I have fallen to the dark side... of shopping!
  23. Please keep this ToO thread somewhat on-topic. I just hid about 20 posts to help clean things up.
  24. Fantastic read. I read it cover to cover. I learned a lot from this guide. I need to rethink my strategy a bit. I'm already targeting a couple different sets that I wasn't paying attention to before. This guide helped open my eyes to the collectibility of different kinds of sets. Overall very well done! Great photography too, btw! Disappointed we didn't see "the thumb", the cat, or a storm trooper at a urinal. Oh well, can't show all your best work on the first edition. Congrats on the book. This is all around awesome. Everything is awesome.
  25. My sets arrived in original cartons, even when my order didn't fill the case so I am happy. I should be very close to having enough track to run through two rooms... and around a Christmas tree.
  26. It appears that everyone on the west coast had their trains delivered today because there is a rush of Cargo Train ads on CL.
  27. I'm going to throw this out there as an unexpected benefit - you might be able to parlay writing on a regular basis for a press pass into conventions. San Diego Comic Con has some of the strictest guidelines, but I feel as if you can pass their test, you can pass anyone else's. If Brickpicker is truly going to start generating content on the front page in the form of articles, blogs, etc. (as opposed to just writing forum posts), then you will be a contributor that should be eligible for consideration. Considering Lego usually has a presence at this major events, it could really be an extra perk for you. Considering my own proximity to San Diego Comic Con, I'm really considering what I can do to contribute in a way that might really be of benefit all the way around.
  28. 3x$18 40122 3x$18 40123 Pretty happy with that as I've just started selling within the past month or so. Feels good to have things moving!
  29. Already undercutting you by having it up on eBay for $99.49.
  30. I've met so many people with small warehouses full of Lego sets that it has me a little tepid about the future of investing. (I know there is a thread for that.) I'm not stopping....just lowering expectations.
  31. I've made a few nice sales since 26 Oct. 32. Don't mind at all. I purchased lot from a fellow Brickpicker back in February/March. Consisted of 250+ lbs. He had done some initial sorting, but finishing that and washing all the parts took about a month. I have been ordering parts as I go, inventorying about a dozen sets or so going by theme.(Had over 100 sets in it from 2005-2009 timeframe) Overall, I'm sure I've made minimum wage due to that hours put in sorting, but was able to keep some really cool sets like an Emerald Night, Motorized AT/AT, 7993 Service Station I've wanted for a long time, random figures, etc. etc. Between what I kept and sold/end up selling(have about a dozen left), I'll make a few thousand profit on a few thousand investment. Was hoping to double my money and I'll be darn close to doing it. This takes into account parts ordered, but not time or anything as I don't lose normal income due to working on this. I've kept a spreadsheet just for this lot to see how it goes. I'll also be taking a long break from doing this again as well.
  33. I've got 9 and, as mentioned by another poster earlier, I'm not selling for less than $30. I really like this set and its box is fantastic. If I can't sell them for more than $30, I'll give them to the kids we 'adopt' for the holidays.
  34. This might be one form of payment for future video reviews and smaller set reviews. If people will send us a sample of what we can expect from them in video form or written form, we might be able to work out a deal with qualified individuals. As Jeff stated earlier, we would like to do a BrickPicker Youtube channel in which the site is promoted and the video creator is rewarded with affiliate advertising dollars. Believe me, people make big money off those videos if they are well done and/or interesting.
  35. Hopefully not the eternal sleep.
  36. You and I are both in Toronto so I won't ask you where that store is, but if it was me I'd empty them out and then deal with whether to sell or build. I would certainly pay $50 to expand the wall which is why getting this for $25 effectively is compelling me to open it.
  37. My book is here! I had 2 minutes to flip through briefly...and got lost in it for 15 minutes. Can't wait to dive in full bore, awesome job Ed and Jeff!
  38. With week 40 and 42 dates showing up, it appears they haven't fully "stopped" production on these for 2015. Anyone like me, thinking this feels a little like The Tumbler last holiday season? Not really available at LEGO Shop at Home, but trickled out weekly to the B&M's (and in this case, some retailers), keeping a lid on the reseller market?
  39. I can imagine that LEGO is starting a "out-of-stock" policy for certain sets after they've sold a certain number of them. This does not have to be connected to 2xVIP but also to other shortages they know might happen. Considering this to be a marketing strategy is probably the best idea. I'm not sure how LEGO thinks about this but as every good business I'm sure they want to be able to control their logistics as much as possible. New masses of resellers surely are a problem from time to time which they need to control somehow without decreasing the value of their product. This might be the way they're doing things now and it's probably not a bad one.
  40. Even Huw on Brickset takes news from the Brick Fan and their photo but gives credit where credit is due. If you have your own take on the polybag, then its different news and good stuff. The one great thing about this site is that there is always a little something extra we can talk about in regards to the lego investing aspect to mix it up a little.
  41. Yep, and that's one reason I think it will do really well. Smaug is "the character" in the hobbit series, and this set and the Unexpected Gathering are the two from the hobbit line to have long term. I plan on holding these for years.. so I already have my stash packed up and sealed in a box and put deep out of sight. In fact, I view all of my LOTR/Hobbit sets that way. But on the same token, now that all these are going out, i'm sort of getting investment fatigue, but I probably will buy a few more.
  42. You mean he will use trickery to get voted from senator to Grand Chancellor by way of overcomplicated plan involving a force sensitive boy and a queen in Kabuki costume ? Haven't we seen that movie before?
  43. very nice! I don't know how you feel about the Dectective's Office, but together with the PR it's my favorite right now. I haven't build the PR myself yet but I just bought it during 2xVIP. Today I did build The Big Bang Theory. The minifigs are superb! The set itself not so much. Don't get me wrong, it sure is a nice little set but I just feel as if some things are missing and should have been done better even if that would have meant putting a slightly higher price on it. I guess once I have the room for it I'll detach the stuff and put it into a modular building probably gonna have to build one just for this set ;-) The outside is nice enough so I guess it is possible.
  44. I haven't but I know another member who did here and here are a couple expanded Bike Shop & Cafe MOCs I found the other day to boot.
