​^ This along with all the little air pillows. I've been using them at will lately just to reduce the amount of space taken up by them. I've been thinking about this person who is selling their collection .. maybe their end game isn't quitting but rather trying to take their profits in one lump sum and move on? If they manage to sell anywhere close to their 28k asking price, they must have made some cash overall. If you're moving a lot of volume, taking a smaller return for such little work (you didn't have to source any of the sets) might be worth it. If you're a long-haul investor, you probably want a little better deal for the risk/storage factor. I do feel the need to point out that using the BP value as the overall value is a huge red flag to me. Many of those sales to US customers include the cost of shipping in the overall value (when a listing has free shipping, obviously that can't be filtered out). There are a ton of big sets too, shipping isn't that cheap that you can ignore it... So from the 33.5k estimate, take about 6% off the top for shipping and material costs. Now if you sell on eBay, take roughly another 12% off (9% + 3% .. assuming seller probably qualifies for a small discount). That brings us to: 33,500 - 4020 (fees) - 2010 (shipping) = 27,470. Looks to me like this seller would profit handsomely from a 28k given some sets are retired and many (if not all) were likely sourced below MSRP. Advertising the overall value at 33.5k with a discount to 28k is just marketing.... a number designed to get you to negotiate less. If you wanted to make 20% today, 22k is the max price. For 10% its 24.7k. If you already have the storage facility + work area, getting 10% off is decent. Plenty of those sets still have room to grow. If I was interested, I'd start at 21 and try to meet around 23. Alas, I'd be in the most trouble ever if I ever made a purchase like that without consulting the other income earning adult in the house.

I think empty boxes may be the Brickpicker spouse's #1 complaint.

Personally, with all the leg work, fees, risk, storage, research and everything else - for my time, if I get less than 50% profit after fees on a set, I consider it a loser in my book (and my goal numbers are actually much higher than that). Now, if there WEREN'T lots of sets capable of getting those profits or more, it might be different. But it's hard to think of 10-20% as a success when there are winners that will draw much bigger out there. If I wanted 10% return, I'd just invest with my financial planner. I want more aggressive returns, and for that, you have to take the risks and do the work. And of course, not all of my LEGO investments are winners (I've made lots of pretty awful purchases) - but my sets that end up much more than 100-150% profit make it balance out and worth it.

Favorite part of filming this set is all the mini figures that can be piled onto all the other pirate sets. Worst part of the set is that the pieces don't fit under the board even though LEGO made it seem like that would be an option. Bonus is the I reenacted a famous game from years ago (aka - Game of the Century).

You spent a bunch of money on some "toys", with the intention of reselling them in the future for more than what you paid for them. Meanwhile, your spouse was ready to have you committed to the looney bin, until you bought them this with some of your profits. I'll start... We have had a pool since we bought our home twelve years ago. Wisconsin winters can be a bit harsh, and this past winter Mother Nature decided that it was time for our old pool to go. She had her way with it, and reduced it to a pile of scrap. Our kids, who are nine and eight, were pretty upset about it, and my wife didn't feel like dipping into savings to buy a new one, so the Lego fund came to the rescue. We just had it installed three weeks ago, fully funded from Lego profit. Now my wife doesn't give me the old fish eye when she comes home and finds several packages on the doorstep. Does anyone else have any fun stories to share?

its because some people view their time as having some value. ​to get a 10% return on stocks you make a phone call or click a mouse aka you have to do nothing. LEGO's don't list themselves for sale, wrap themselves in bubble wrap, find themselves a box to jump into, tape the box shut, weight the box, slap on a label and get to the post office. so yeah - 10% return on LEGO sort of sucks.

While not many of us seem to have heard of it - it was easy to find the meaning of the term (which is pretty offensive). Oversensitive or not - it was a pretty stupid thing for LEGO to let slip by. Plus, the one who wrote it for them must have known what it meant.

Reselling lego is working for your money. Investments like stocks is your money working for you. Nothing wrong with either (I do both) but I expect much higher returns if I am working for the money. And, working for your money is a double dip ... each you you spend working is an hour you are not spending doing something (else?) you enjoy.

I agree with most of this. I also think it depends on scale. Some people have their operation setup where they can find a box for just about anything so packing and shipping takes the same amount of time for a polybag, battle pack or SSD. I find myself scrambling to find boxes that aren't too big for certain sets. By the time I find the right one and get it packed, weighed, sized and a label printed I've burned up a half an hour. I know that sounds inefficient but I'm not at the volume to justify having everything on hand. I'm not real strict on trying to calculate an hourly wage for this venture/hobby. If you add up all the time I'm on brickpicker, I'm making pennies per hour. I enjoy this as a hobby, a way to earn some side income, and most of all, a way to justify the feeding of my hoarding instincts

You could always try to fool the site by logging in at work and stay logged in there... After that, log out at home and log back in. It should pick up your home IP and use that as your location from anywhere until you logout/login again. I don't know how it works, but I'm guessing that might work.

​This is a good point, the sheer number of pieces and amount of shipping cost per transaction would likely inflate the brick-linked cost of this set significantly. How many hours do you spend cataloguing and searching for individual parts before your $/hr cost is greater than a couple extra hundred bucks to buy it pre-boxed, pre-sorted, 100% complete?

Stay classy San Diego... San Diego cops bust major Lego theft ring, $100K worth of toys stolen

We just did a 5 day Disney cruise with the profits of me selling off some of my sets. The cruise itself cost me nothing, it was all profit from selling sets. I did, however, have to pay for the stay at Disneyland before the cruise.

I did a garage sale and sold $2000 in sets and made a profit of $460. Did not cover all of it but my wife was happy with the Genesis Weber grill that appeared at the house two days later, The grill is $750 so it covered well over half. I'm still crazy but not quite as much as I used to be in her eyes.

I recently inquired about why my country flag wasn't showing up under my user ID on posts. To solve this Jeff suggested that I log out of the forum and log back in again. 76040 Brainiac Attack Rare is it that I put together a set I bought two days ago. But, you've got understand - as a 42 year old man, who has always loved Superman , this set is the bomb. It's got Brainiac with an awesome looking ship. In person, this thing looks menacing. Then you have Superman. And more importantly to me, Supergirl. Supergirl! I never thought I see her as a mini figure. And add Martian Manhunter to the mix - another character I've loved forever. This set is pure gold to me. Can you tell I read a lot of Silver Age DC Comics when I was a wee lad? Anyway, a winner all the way around in my book. Tough to get a discount on this, as it's a Target exclusive. I'm thinking this standing next to the Lex Luthor Power Armor is going to look pretty cool.

I was in local lego store and was told they are not getting any more PC in but she said when they do she buys them. Makes our job harder. Lol

​That's my offer if I need to take the whole lot. Maybe 21k to 22k, but that's my maximum. You need to spend over 20K cash to bring those home. And some of the sets will sit there for a little bit longer. You probably need to get a new storage for those sets and stoarge is not free either, plus the time effort and risk of selling to an evil buyer. I may take advange ot this guy, but this is business. I want to maximize my profit. I'll just walk away if my offer is rejected, there will be no hurt.

I did very well with those trains. The trick was buying at the right price. Everyone bashes LR, but it was an easy double if you did it right. Not every set is meant to sit in a closet for 3 years.

AS long as they keep giving me 10.00 for every 50.00 spent...I'll keep shopping . 20% in store "dollars" is a no brainer and goes a long way to helping my profit margins in regards to selling. It's not like name brand products at K-Mart cost anymore or are inferior to the same name brand products sold elsewhere.

Update: My parts came in. The black 1x1s are in. Unfortunately the white 1x1s were quite yellow and discolored. My fault as I ordered used ones as an add on to another order as that's all the seller had. Only about 6 of them were usable. I usually only go for new condition white parts and this has taught me to stick to that rule. So I'll have to source a few more. Dark side looking good. Just Boba and Maul to come. I also have weapons to come, lightsabers and blasters etc. Light side looking a little sparse so far.

Welcome First suggestion is collect what you like- even for investing. That way if it is a dud you still have it and enjoy it. Second - read the posts here. I have learned a lot and taken suggestion that have been very lucrative but remember everyone has opinions and they are different. Third Develop a strategy and be happy with that strategy, Buy and hold, quick flip, part it out, used, everything on sale, big sets only, exclusives only, etc. are all strategies and every person here has one. Fourth, Time, space and money are all limited. Fifth, define your goal. Six, be realistic, this is work to be successful. My last two big buys were the ToO and Red 5. I am waiting for my orders but I think these are reaching the end of their run (in my opinion) and with points and a winter soldier I feel they are a good buy right now. (Just my opinion.) My longshot outsider is the Maersk EEE. IT is in stock but has a retiring notation. But I really like this set so it is more of a personal thing to me.,

​I had this thought, but the items are owned by (in this case) Walmart. Not sure if they would sell and turn the money to Walmart. If they eventually get turned over to Walmart, it would explain why periodically some of us find products that are 2-3 years old popping up in at random Walmart.

​I'm in the same boat as you. I don't have an easy to obtain supply of boxes, so every time I get something delivered from Amazon or TLG, I evaluate to see if the box is a good size to keep. When I'm ready to ship something, I go through all the boxes I have to find the one that has just enough space for packing materials to protect the box and nothing more. It's definitely work and it takes up storage space but I hate paying for shipping boxes. Oh, and I have to deal with my wife complaining about why I have all these empty boxes laying around.

around these parts we started calling 7965 the Money Factory but Millenial Filcher was a close second. unquenchable demand makes this set a win-win-win. sell now, sell later. make mo money no matta what. buying a set before it retires, it retires and goes up in value, you sell and make money - what a concept. figure out how much you wanna make list it at that price - get it.
