I had to make a few changes to the way this alert system works because it it actually too fast with the updates and too efficient. It was costing us a small fortune to send out SMS messages for items that people were not really interested in buying. You will need to go in an check your items to make sure you are receiving alerts on the sets that you want. You will now have the opportunity to select either email and/or SMS for each sets for each store that you are interested in. There is also logic in there tracking purchases (mostly Amazon since they have the most changes). That will disable SMS alerts after a while if no purchases are made. You will still always get email alerts, but there is no need to bombard people with 100 SMS alerts if you are not ready to purchase that set at this time. Hopefully this will keep your phones from going crazy as well as keep you up to date when stock is available. It is also keeps the system Free for people to use.4 points

If owned, I would also get out w/in months since City is refreshed so often. In the last year, we have had 3 city explorer type sub-themes. Coast Guard, Arctic and the up-coming underwater sets. Demand will decrease sooner or later. 2x retail if awesome for a City set that can still be had in various parts of the world.3 points

I think there is a point where set rarity comes into play outside of theme demand. This one in North America is already a double. It disappeared extremely quickly and under the cover of Christmas. Many would have made the assumption they would pick this set up on sale or clearance at a later time and being nothing special wouldn't have to worry. I know others have commented that sets with this short of availability are few but I wonder if any city experts have any comparable sets in mind?1 point

I can understand some of the company's standing with the Minifigures line or at least believe I do. In the beginning LEGO did not realize how quickly the line would gain traction in popularity practically exploding (in the US mainly). Even so the second series continued with the $2 price tag after increasing the amount produced. Aside from the growing desire by the masses, I think one of the probable reasons why the third series was the first to see a dollar hike would be how the public had found a way around the blind bag which for series 1 & 2 were unique barcodes for each character making the mystery less mysterious. Moving on to series 3 which introduced the fabled 'bump codes', well we know people eventually figured that method out therefore LEGO mixed it up again (around series 8 maybe) by what I can only figure as having a unique series of bump codes per each production run. (I have nothing factual other than personal experience and what others have said to form that last sentence so let's just chuck it to plausible conspiracy.) Anyway The Simpsons Minifigures (or rather the first series of) had the last current raise in price that could understandably make sense seeing how LEGO needed to mold every single character's head plus they also came up with molded sleeves and shorts. A new technique I think really improved the standard minifigure and has paved way to a whole new level for the little guy. Also there is the topic of licensing too although from what I remember it was Fox who went to LEGO so that was negligible. Keeping the price hike afterwards comes across as a "seems we can get away with it so why go back to $3?" sort of logic. True I do not have a real clue as to all the costs the company has to consider and contend with on a regular basis. However I can't quite see any legitimate reason to go so high in such a relatively short timeframe. Each one has been and continues to be made in China. The costs couldn't get much lower for the company.Almost all new parts made for the line get used elsewhere in other themes. Only a couple are too unique for any other use (Medusa for example). The printed designs may be unique but so are a number of other minifigures in regular sets (some have even stayed exclusive to that set). Those are a few reason off the top of my head that I feel would make anyone think the price at this point is simply because they can. There could be other factors such as the price was also meant to deter collectors who intentionally grab certain ones to sell or even to somewhat counter the effect of how people have found ways to beat their blind system. All this is mere speculation almost to the point of conspiracy.1 point

Love, love, love the new AA as an investment, and very disappointed it vanished before I could get more. The old one has had epic returns... the new one is much sexier- IMO- and will see very generous returns as well.1 point

Very true. I've got a stack to flip and a stack to hold. Sounds like a Kenny Rogers song.1 point

Well said Trek. Interesting to to compare it to AA, both of which are doing very well. But the "Little Guy" much better... and neither one is officially retired. TH is in its own catengory due to the rug being yanked out beneath it. But R2 is in a class of his own. What a unique build. With the combination of Disney and J.J. Abrams behind Star Wars... there will be a film a year from now until the Biblical Apocalypse. Their formula is simple: a trilogy every other year: a SW character-centric film between. There was a time I believed the SW Lego theme to be "cooling off". The rising tide of these future films will lift all SW Lego "boats". This theme- and this set- are red-hot.1 point

I finally found a box of Series 13 at Walmart (still nothing from Target) and now I should have the other twelve characters I did not find before. I have not had a chance to open these ones up for display yet but looking forward to it. Unfortunately I got stuck paying $4 each which pretty much killed my personal 'allowance'. People complain with "LEGO is expensive" looking at the $100 or so sets when they should look further down at these smalls. Going from $2 to now paying twice that amount on these single minifigures is just insane. I could stomach $3 but what the heck? These can't possibly cost the company more to make a couple years later from the line's original inception. Sorry for the sourness. Just one of those things when you get more in a polybag for the same price by comparison or when the total cost could have bought a hefty set or two. Shoot, for a dollar more one Mixel offers a whole lot.1 point

Oh as a comic fanboy, I know all about the Supergirl show and my hopes aren't high. I don't think kids really care about Supergirl enough. I barely see any interest in Wonder Woman anymore. j'onn j'onzz Is popular with peope my age but again, the kids doesn't seem to care about him. Heck, since the Man of Steel film and lack of a legit role in The Lego Movie,, ids don't seem to really care much about Superman. Zack Synder is terrible. Everything is Batman, Avengers, and Spider-Man. By the way. The Flash and Arrow (since season 2) shows are done well. Maybe Supergirl stands a chance. I'm just staying away from this set except for one if my son ever asks for it (and he likes Superman).1 point

Why? Many on here like to keep their dorky toy collecting/selling side separate from the rest of their life. Here they don't have to. As far as the OP I would like to echo the sentiment of "I came for the LEGO, I stayed for the community." As much as I love LEGO I can only talk about it so much, and on a slow deal day we need something to keep us online.1 point

I'm interested in your thoughts on sets overdue for retirement. Maybe a top-3 or top-5? Here's my list. All of these are well-past their due date. I'd pop champagne if a few of these hit EOL sometime this year. 1. 10188 - Death Live Star. 2008! Can anyone really argue against this? 2. 10214 - Tower Bridge. 5 years and counting... 3. 10220 - VW T1 4 years old, seems like its been here since the mid 60s. 4. 10235 - Winter Village Market. Seems to have more lives than a cat. The Death Star of Seasonals? 5. 10218 - Pet Shop. With the out-of-order retirement of TH, this set is now 4+ years old. It should have been next. I'm sure I'm forgetting many here. What did I miss?1 point

As hxc sarcastically points out, this community is special for having money to spend and a keen eye for deals. I get the impression that some of you are content to chase Target clearance and a 5 dollar profit for the next 5 years, but I think we can achieve more. As far as "go join a travel forum" I think the people on this site are better suited to provide me travel deals. And I look forward to buying a drink for anyone who does hook us all up with a big vacation deal.1 point

Respectfully, I think you are over-thinking it. Hits and eyeballs make forums more successful and increase the value of a forum. If the Macks ever sell this place, it will be more valuable with more users and posts, not everything condensed down as far as possible. My goal with the Travel thread (which I believe prompted this thread) was to find good deals and eventually get a meetup together and I think that it would have taken off. We have high net worth individuals who are good at spotting deals and I don't think they will think to post Travel deals individually in the "non-Lego Deals" section...too tedious to find the section, then create a thread. I've posted deals here and helped this forum for 2 years. That travel thread was gonna be gold. You are limiting the freedom of the members you count on to make this forum work.1 point

Of course it is still early (or not yet even) in the "EOL" stage for all sets in this theme but you are correct that overall it has not been too good investment-wise. By CAGR in the database, Shelob's Lair (25%) and Mirkwood Elf Army are the leaders thus far. Mirkwood Spiders has really taken off lately, Lake Town Chase got a huge bump over the holidays, and Unexpected Gathering is finally starting its inevitable climb as well. ToO speaks for itself. The first four are very roughly double MSRP on eBay last I checked. Why those? The minifigs tell the main story, if you ask me - especially after the final Hobbit movie. But to address your question, is any of this performance "good"? For the pair of wave 2 Hobbit sets, I would argue yes. They can still be found in the occasional Walmart for up to 50% off and are fetching ~4x that. But it really depends on when they plateau, of course. On the subject of minifigs, Lonely Mountain has five exclusive version minifigs in addition to the big fire-breathing star of the show, including the three dwarves that "matter" in the movie besides Thorin. Perhaps more importantly, it represents the point of the whole dang story from start to finish. For purists, very little of that other "5 armies" spectacle was in the book, and none of the Dol Guldur business. Of course this probably won't matter a great deal but it is something to think about long term. Helm's Deep is not a great comparison, in my opinion, though arguably the closest between the two sibling themes. It did do quite well initially after becoming unavailable, but plateau'd very quickly too. Holidays and all that... It only has 3 exclusive minifigs out of 8 total, by the way, two of which are comparable to the Lonely Mountain dwarves in terms of being "second tier" important characters. No super-villain-huge-awesome-guy to carry the set at all. And unlike Hulk, we know we will never see another Lego Smaug. Furthermore, despite a very solid design, Helm's Deep suffers from "lots of grey bricks" syndrome. The Lonely Mountain does not. It is colorful and therefore more unique. Finally, Helm's Deep is just not iconic enough to represent LotR the way Lonely Mountain represents The Hobbit. It is much more similar to Lake Town in many ways, story-wise. The difference being, it survives.. mostly. Now, had Sauron "lived" in Mount Doom, and THAT set been released, WITH him as a maxi-fig, we would have an ideal comparison product. I realize Unexpected Gathering is much easier to display, so it may be chosen "over" this set by many folks who don't give a rip about any of the rest of it. But I think the (personally predicted) difference in supply will more than make up for that in terms of the sets competing against each other. Another way to put it is that this set is to The Hobbit what Black Pearl was to PotC, or Hogwarts to Harry Potter (imagine if there had only been one version). Obviously I am not the first to draw those comparisons.1 point
