  4. I find all this chatter about big vs small a good read, but in the end it doesn't matter. I've got two R2s in my investment pile and that's one more than I planned on. I decided to snag one the last time they came into stock at S@H. I don't honestly know how people get their hands on so much stock and I don't really care. There are plenty of good theories out there and I'll bet there is an element of truth to most of them. This is the first Xmas season I've tried selling some of my investments and doing some QFLL and I was moderately successful with both. Fell short of my goal by about $1k (overall sales) but I also disappeared for the holidays to the Caribbean on dec 11th. That was worth more any last minute deals or sales. Besides, I have a day job that I find enjoyable and easy. Pays the bills too. Lego is a sideline that makes up around 5% of our investments. I won't try to compete or I'd go broke. :)

  5. I'd be careful with these going forward. I know this is the hot item around here recently, but as previously mentioned, I'd be willing to bet these behave like the CMF series with Series 1 being worth a lot, then future series' becoming worth less and less as more and more people start hoarding them and more are produced. Not to mention that as soon as some of the rare parts become readily available from other sources, people will be able to BrickLink these guys for cheap.

  8. At first sight, one can say that it is a decent deal. But when you think about it, it's not that much of a good deal IMO. First off, it's vintage, and if you want to complete any of the sets there, it can get costly as some vintage pieces are expensive. Second, selling vintage sets takes a long time, and from the sets in the listing, it seems to me that it would take a long time to sell everything. I don't see this lot being worth it because of these two reasons. I have dealt with these lots before and the older the sets are the harder it is to sell them because no one is looking for them.

  14. I hate you all. At that price, I would be buying them to put away. Other than ToO and Helm's Deep, I have no interest in any of the Hobbit/LotR sets. I want Lonely Mountain because I want that dang dragon. He's just too awesome. I'm thinking Halloween Town, Vampyre Castle, dragon drapped over it.

  15. I was told through Christmas. She said it might actually end Christmas eve in the system. The super heroes deal is good too just didn't have much luck getting the same price points to work out on the Bogo 50 deal to maximize the discount, and some of those are a little over retail. The 20% off coupon is good until the 24th and it is reusable (it says limit 1 time per store visit but I did 2 transactions at one store and the lady said it was fine to use it again). Also on your receipts you get a code for $15 off a $50 purchase online so you could get 30% off that way on some other stuff (not much selection though). That starts 12/28 and ends 1/3 and the code is the same on all the receipts so assume multiple use is fine. I will say this much more customer friendly there than B&****** and will try to make sure you've received every maximum discount you can.

  19. I think the handful of people here who have it all figured out should go and start their own website......they are obviously wasting their time here with us idiots. It's been my experience here though that the ones who bark the loudest are the ones who know the least. Funny how that works out.

  21. OK, who else here from Washington, Oregon, Idaho? (Could include Alaska I guess too) I know we have a few folks from the Seattle area, thought it could be cool to have a PNW thread to call our own for some of our regional stuff that doesn't fit in other threads broadly, like discussion of Fred Meyer or Bartell Drugs? Fred Meyer in particular has a good sale on right now, although they are getting cleaned out quickly: - Uruk Hai Army $19.99 - SW Planet sets $4.99 - 4440 Forest Police Station for $49.99 Lots of Hero Factory on sale as well for 40%-ish off. Anyone else want to raise their hand as a PNW'er?

  22. I sold 12 via Craigslist at $65 and probably could have sold 20 more. I was averaging a sale a day from the first posting. People were thrilled to get them at that price point.

  26. If you have top rated status (discounted 20% FVF), keep in mind that you just can't cancel the transaction unless the buyer agrees to. If they do not accept the cancellation, they can leave negative feedback, you don't get your fees back and it counts against your top rated (less than 2% defections). Just make sure it's tracked and add a signature if worried.

  27. Hello Bill, welcome to the forum. 9676 will in my opinion not be the best of performers. I'm not sure if you should look at LEGO investment in a 10-15 year range if you want to make profit out of LEGO 1)Most of the profit on items are made in 1-3 years after they are End Of Life. After that, it will of course still rise but there will be other more profitable opportunities. 2)You don't know if in 10-15 years, there will still be such a demand of LEGO. 3)LEGO takes up space and space should be used in order of profit (1) 4)LEGO secondary market is getting saturated more and more. And a good tip. Don't buy everything that is marked off xx%. Some LEGO is extremely hard to sell afterwards for a small margin. Take time to read this forum. There is not much said about "buy this set now" but you'll see that when you follow conversations here, you'll find out the good opportunities. Succes and enjoy!

  29. As a fan of the entire series of books and movies I have let it cloud my judgement a bit with the LEGO sets. I still think there is hope for future performance and think that once the theme is gone for good people will realize they missed out on it. It's a theme that will likely never be revisited. As a fan, I just wish there was one more wave of LOTR sets to round out the Two Towers and Return of the King characters and locations that they never got to.

  30. Don't listen to the hipster critics on the new hobbit movie, it r0x0rs b0x0rs. They found the "multiple storylines" confusing. I would image they also find tic-tac-toe a strategic quagmire, as the movie only had 2 major locations: lake town and the mountain. Almost no unnecessary dialog and loose ends were tied. Did a nice job foreshadowing what was coming in LotR. I loved the cameo of a LotR protagonist in his good form during the witch king battle. I couldn't turn off the lego investor as I watched. All I kept saying was "YES YES YES". May be too little too late, but hopefully the older sets get a nice bump from the closing of the series. I for one can't wait to finish my collection now and will enjoy a LotR / Hobbit marathon during Christmas break

  35. I was pretty lucky at a couple Meijer stores today while visiting family. I found 100+ and I know I have at least 2 full cases worth. If I head back to the big city after the holidays, I'll do some looking again. I stopped at 7 stores today, 4 coming into town and 3 when leaving, much to my wife's dismay. I'll post a pic tomorrow in the "Buy" thread, but I can't dig everything out of the back of the truck until my son is out of the house tomorrow. I found a few other good Meijer deals today, but mostly for personal use and not for investment (cough, CHIMA, cough).

  36. Killing me man. I want Lonely Mountain, just for the dragon. Don't care about any of the other parts. Would love to get it at that price. Best I've been able to get is $89 at TRU. Where did you find those deals? I'd buy out Benny's at $63, too. Great finds.

  39. The problem with these sets for resale is postage. After Ebay fees and postage costs taken into consideration, you need to be selling for $25+ to make these even remotely worthwhile... money is better spent elsewhere. I really like these sets, and I have a few in my study at home, but for resale I'm giving these a miss.

  40. My kid loves these and has them all. I am still surprised it is hard for me to choose which character / colors will be most popular. For example from Series 1, I definitely thought the reds were the coolest, but yellows were the clear winner in resale value (though reds are catching up fast). Series 2, I like the Fang Gang... all those teeth... but the slow, frozen blues are the hottest seller. Series 3, I like the tans, especially Scorpi, but current word on the street says that purples will become hardest to find. I'm guessing it has more to do with childrens' attraction to favorite colors than the characters themselves. Given a choice between a brown, blue, or orange mixel, kids choose blue (a favorite color for lots of people). Maybe it's as simple as that. Anyone parting out Mixels yet? ... just kidding... but I was wondering... could someday the Mixel / Nixel packs become more valuable than the others? Could they be parted out? For those that don't know... each color set of three has one character that comes with one Nixel inside (Nixels are little black enemies of the Mixels). If you've seen the cartoon clips, or played the tablet app, you'll know that Nixels get together in large groups to fight the Mixels. It's possible there's some buyers out there who want to create an "army" of Nixels. I believe the current characters that have Nixels in the pack are: Krader, Teslo, Vulk, Balk, Chomly, Slumbo, Glurt, Hoogi, and Magnifo (correct me if I'm wrong... I just asked my 6 year old, and he listed them off in about 5 seconds.... he seemed quite sure of himself). On the same note, I think Lego is missing an opportunity to print more money, by not offering black Nixel-only packs. Just like those kids who don't care about Luke and Han (but want to collect ALL of the Sith and Vaders), I'm sure there are Nixel "dark side" fans. They could also offer a variety of "boss" Nixels, like those shown on the other media.

  43. it would help if people selling the series 1 stuck to their guns and stopped undercutting each other. i mean there's only a handful of full sets. it's not like there's a ton of competition. start bumping them up to $150 and if everyone does, people will have to pay it cause they aren't getting series 1 any other way. then series 2 will soon follow the lead. obviously i know how it works and just saying this more as a wish and not thinking it will happen because people want sales so undercutting is always necessary and goes with any product. haha. but it has dipped from $125 to $110 regularly because there's been more popping up. hopefully sellers stick to $125 and once most are gone and the people who have tons of sets on here can start slowly putting them out there for more. i believe big time in mixels...all series. hold on to them for a while longer. no rush to sell. i also think with series 4 introducing more infernites, that people will want the original ones, thus pushing series 1 up again. i also saw they were going to produce a game, is that the app they are talking about? or could there actually be a lego mixels game such like all the other xbox/ps games? i think there is potential for a great game like that. then sets would really drive up with that hype.

  44. That's how Lego gets more product sold - you obviously need two sets - one to build individually, and one to build into a Max.
    1 point
  45. i see no reason why series 2 won't do really well. series 3 might not as there just seems like way more were produced perhaps. i think in a few months once the listings cool down series 1 will hit $150 regularly and series 2 will jump to $100 per set. i also have multiple sets. ya know i built my first mixels the other night. the purple set, then made the max. gotta say it's pretty ingenious. all 3 were cool in their own right and mixed together to make the super mixel, also very creative. i will say however, they were not easy to take apart and was time consuming, so once the 3 are built, and you then decide to make the max, that kinda stinks. it's almost like it's easier to decide if you want to make the 3 stand alone or the max right off the bat and go with that. either way, love the mixels all around and excited for series 4, especially the glow in the dark ones, i think those will be incredibly popular.
