Interesting experience today via CL. A good one actually. Very nice guy, met me at a Mickey D's and I sold him a SC. The interesting part was he mentioned brickpicker during the transaction. I replied with "oh I guess you know what kind of scumbag I am then" heh heh. Had a good laugh, he doesn't resent lego investors though instead seemed genuinely interested.

Sales are winding down finally...outbound stack (near) is gradually getting smaller than inbound (far)...inbound today is a DS, some Cargo Terminals, Sail Barges and other small misc. (76000, etc)

Some of you guys are out of your minds. Yes, anything can happen when it comes to Lego retirements but just work with the data you have staring you in the face: One insignificant retailer says it's backordered, everywhere else is sold out with no sign of a return. I interpreted Ed Mack's post as "You're all insane and won't believe a set is dead until its bloated corpse is lying in front of you and its too late".

Too late, I've already returned all mine so I can rebuy with double points and Winter Soldier polybag.

They're not, at least not by eBay. You can manually cancel their bids as they come in, but should one sneak through at the last moment, eBay will issue you a defect if you cancel the transaction after the auction ends. Too many defects, no more eBay selling account. And, for those who are using the far more lucrative method of fixed price instead of auction, there is no bid cancellation or accepted cancellation for the non-supported requirement of 0-4 feedback. In being penny "wise" in protecting yourself from the supposed increase in risk of zero feedback buyers (a risk that I have not personally seen in 17 years of selling on eBay), you are perhaps being pound foolish by leaving money on the table by running auctions versus fixed price listings. I would not recommend fooling around in an eBay gray area that's more likely to lead to trouble than avoid it. I also wouldn't recommend auctions over fixed price listings except in very specific cases (a very rare and very desirable item that will surely attract a lot of buyers, or a very flavor-of-the-month very rare item -- new style iPad, hottest toy this Christmas that's out of stock everywhere, etc.)

Emotionally, I have that problem with Super Heroes sets. I've never been into the comics they're based on, so if I just buy based on my own interests I'd never touch 'em. But you've got to consider past performance. Folks love Batman. I mean, even Wyldstyle fell for him.

Hello all, I've seen a couple of posts from people from Atlanta so I know there's some of us here! I've been a Lego fan since I received set 6054 when I was 5 years old. I've owned quite a bit of sets over the years. They were mostly Forestmen, Exploriens, Ice Planet 2002 (6879 is one of my favorite small sets ever), Castle sets around that time (6081 & 6082), and random others. Once I turned 15 I stopped caring about them, at 18 I moved out of the house, and at age 20 my parents gave (GAVE, not SOLD) away every single one of my sets and parts to one of their friend's kid without me knowing it. It was their house though, and they had purchased those for me, but it made me sad nonetheless! Fast forward another ten years from that black day - I have some young'ns around the house and one is starting to get to the age of Lego. I slowly started building his collection with some Junior Lego (straight up skipped over Duplo) as he isn't even of the age to play with those but he loves to play with the minifigures and build towers out of the blocks. I am a collector and investor (and accountant by profession). I've invested/collected in quite a few things including rare coins, bullion, comic books, sports memorabilia and other items. I am going to add Lego to this list as well. Just made my first purchase thanks to someone on this board giving me the heads up on Horizon Express 10233 in stock at Target - nabbed three of them before it went poof! They were delivered yesterday morning and it brought back all those feelings I used to have playing Lego. You all have a great community here and I look forward to contributing to the betterment of it.

An alternative theory - Things are great. LEGO Shop at Home told me when I said it is like a mass discontinuation of almost everything that "well there is a ton of great new product coming out next year". Could it be they have almost emptied their warehouse of tons of old things like the exclusives and they are doing this because there is a bunch more middle sized & smaller sets they want to get rid of because they really are doing an Extinction Level Event on their old product lines. This goes with Mos Eisley's thoughts and I typed them before reading his post but had not posted mine yet.

They don't appear to be having a problem moving exclusives so I would say that policy has no impact on sales. What they aren't selling through is all the regular stuff that you can still get at a discount. But the reason they aren't selling through their own supply is because the majority of sets are still available on every other retailer's shelves. I'm pretty sure their sales are up so significantly this year over last that regardless of what happens the rest of the year, they will still have an increase. I expect more sales, including LEGO stores, after Christmas and early next year to get rid of all the old stuff. They have clearly produced more of mostly everything this year, so just because it isn't all gone, doesn't mean they haven't sold the hell out of what they have been producing.

I'm really not too worried about Minecraft returns. They'll be ripped open and mixed in with other pieces on Christmas morning and the parents are just relieved they could get one or two sets, as scarce as they were.

I have kicked around that idea of a restocking fee, but just like having quick & easy returns set up (which I have tried) - it tends to backfire. The quick & easy is definitely a defect magnet, as it is too easy to claim something was wrong and avoid return shipping costs - just by clicking a button (without the need to contact the buyer to explain). I believe that restocking charges would only make buyers who experience "buyers remorse" more likely to feel justified in abusing the system. By the way, I never have a problem with accepting a return, or canceling an order. It will sell again (generally it sells for more) - plus I like to have as much inventory as I can in my store.

Honestly thought the buyer wasn't going to pay and was just trolling me... My auction was right under TRU ebay's listing for $209.99 after-all haha. I would definitely try selling some smaller sets and "test the waters" on which avenue you think best fits your selling style. I personally rarely use CL/Kijiji as i just don't have the time and the little time i do have i value too much to be wasting time arranging meetups and the headaches that come with no-shows or late buyers etc. I have had to play the balancing game these past few months with which sets to go for. So many winners seemingly retiring which will all be winners. But i don't want to tie too much up. Passing on R2 myself, mainly just because i can't get em all. I was debating passing on AA, but with my recent sale of one I've grabbed a couple to hold.

Definitely sell some stuff first to get your feet wet, you don't want to have your first major sale having a huge issue. Going off topic to give you an idea - but the largest issue is your market size. If you have a great opportunity to sell locally in the future, then I would buy everything now as it is only going to go up in value. If you try to sell on ebay, then you have to compete with any American based seller. Example: Your future exclusive listed at 400US with shipping embedded and an estimated 16% exchange rate. All fees are constant. US Domestic shipping will result in a net sale of $327.80US (323.80 if I personally sell it and ship from the US) Canada to US shipping with Canada Post will result in a net sale of $293.80US plus the consumer MAY have to pay import fees on top: According to tariff schedule 9503.00 your consumer will not have to pay any fees but you don't know that for sure. Basically between you and any domestic seller, a US consumer will likely buy domestically and not worry about shipments from Canada. Unless you have easy access to the US market or are one of very few sellers of your exclusive, your market is limited to Canada and overseas and there is still money to be made (especially in the Asian/Australian markets, thanks GSP!)

Just an update...I called Lego customer service and explained the situation. I told them to charge my card and they did. The woman I spoke to had no idea these were being double shipped. As a thank you, she didn't charge me any sales tax. -Jeff

From my perspective, J.J. Abrams gets the benefit of doubt. He has given us: Lost The recent Star Treks MI: 3 Super 8 (absolutely outstanding film) Cloverfield (another incredible film) ... and has focused his work on being LESS CGI-dependent, and more story development, character-development, and old-school filming techniques that feel much more authentic (ex: puppeteered Yoda (awesome) versus CGI Yoda (sad.). Thank GOD Michael Bay wasn't given this project. Honestly, I can't think of another director more qualified to handle this material. I believe he'll do for SW what Jackson did for LOTR, and what Sam Raime did for Spiderman 1-2. Here's to hoping.

I just scored a (supposedly complete) 10194 Emerald Night Express with box/instructions for $80

You think dealing with Lego is bad on CL, try dealing with musicians...... I have discovered that CL is flypaper for freaks. But, I've had some great deals and some so-so ones. One deal was $300 for what appeared to be around 40-50 sets with boxes and instructions. Lots of Castle, Knights Kingdom, Creator, Dino Hunt, Indiana Jones, Ninjago, Power Miners, and more. The place was about 2 hours away, but the deal seemed well worth it. About 15 minutes before getting there, the guy tells me that he got an offer for $400. I told him that I will be there in 15 minutes. I get there, and there were a ton of Lego stuff. I brought my 3 year old son with me, and when he got there he was so excited about all the Lego. At that point, I think the guy felt guilty about asking more and let it all go for $300. We load up my car to the hilt. My son had to ride home with a Creator ferry boat on his lap, and literally covered in Lego boxes. Over the days, I find that most of the sets were incomplete, and some of them were just the box only. Some of the sets were very incomplete, for example the Coast Guard set had the lighthouse but no boat. I was a little disappointed that I didn't get nearly as many sets as I thought I would have considering the number of boxes. But, I did come out with a Green Grocer with sealed bags and Temple of Fire, both with original boxes, so I shouldn't complain too much.
