During the week, at the normal retail. On the weekends, from some guys trunk in a dark alley down by the docks next to the abandoned warehouse that is built over the old Indian burial grounds right on the disputed border between the bloods and the crips.

A bit esoteric I know but I finally finished bricklinking the parts and managed to find a manual that wasn't crazy expensive. Finally built the M:Tron 6862 Secret Space Voyager. It wasn't really a set but more a buy 3 sets and send off to LEGO for a manual to use pieces from those 3 sets. Clever person. As most of the sets have boxes and or instructions (or are built), I have identified the following. You never know, sometimes people find outstanding deals. I got a mint Helm's Deep in late Feb for $60, is that believable? Of course there are drop shippers and plenty of other scams, but there are still plenty of legit methods to get some discounts, even on those sets that Lego Corporate doesn't want discounted. I do think most folks are telling the truth, but it's a definite that there's some embellishment going on- it's human nature. I could say, "Back in December, I bought an Architecture Studio for $135 and sold it two hours later for $300. Easy $165 profit." Or, I could say "Back I December, I bought an AS for $135 and flipped it for $300. After sales tax, fees, and shipping, I had a net profit of $85." Both of these would be true, but that first example sounds a lot more impressive, doesn't it?

If you're asking if someone would lie on the internet, I would say yes, there are people that would lie on the internet. As far as some of the deals go, there are some great deals, but you may have to get creative with coupon stacking, rewards, giftcards, etc. People tend to count rewards differently so that factors in too. Why do you ask?

A bank would be pretty nice too, with a huge safe, customer area downstairs and management/analyst area upstairs with openable windows for suicidal brokers to simulate the financial crysis. Post office is also a good candidate with lots of opportunities. Or a health clinic.

I love it when I am building a set from my collection and find the rare piece that I need just by glancing at the pile.

I'd like to see a traditional British pub or a kebab shop with overflowing bins outside, token drunkards and puke on the pavement. I would imagine that something along the lines of a Police station or Library though could well be the most likely.

(I didn't find such a topic, sorry if it already exists) I would love a museum, with fossils on the first floor, some paintings and sculptures on 2nd floor... A sea museum would be cool but I don't think it's possible. Nor a prison... Why not a building with arcade cabinets, pools, pinballs on first floor, a bowling on second floor (yes, TOK posted such a MOC) and a dance floor on the last floor... But I think there's a lot more of chance that a public library or a museum would be the next modular. What's your opinion ? What would you like ?

I have also had some luck at garage sales. Sometimes I go to the sale towards the end and see if they have any Lego sets left. If they do, they usually give a nice discount.

I find that shopping during the week is better than on the weekends anyway. smaller crowds, and less competition. also, it gives you a better chance at scoring the mega deals while those who work bankers hours are at work.

This is a thought that seems obvious, but a lot of times you have to think what it does to Legos brand to have limited production runs, exclusives, etc. It is just good business practice IMO. You have to keep people interested, on the edge of their seats, etc. Having limited production on stuff keeps people interested and coming to your sites, etc. How many companies have lived through massively overproducing items? Think about how bad it is for someones brand for them to have tons of the same stuff sitting and rotting on shelves? If I owned a toy business, this would be a big strategy of mine as well. Obviously having a good product is important, but things like this drive popularity.

I think this question is legit. I try to visit as many as possible retailers in the weekend to hunt for good deals cause I also have a daytime job. Here in Europe normal retailers close at 18:00 hours during the week. I especially hunt for retired or near retirement sets and offcourse good deals in general. Lately I have found some nice little toy shops not so far away where I found some nice older sets. I really like this treasure hunting. To be honoust, finding cheap or retired sets gives me a bigger rush than selling sets with a nice profit.

Ummm.....the same places that we buy it during the week. Are there secret lego retailers that are only open on weekends that we are unaware of?

So I went to Target to get some city sets or princesses or creator and when I was procastinating in the clearance I see this 2 big lego boxes VW T1 10220 with clearance steakers going for $86 in perfect condition. Grab them ask the employee if they have more and nothing shows up, she looks surprise the cashier as well but anyway apply the 10% ending today for cartwheel + 5% Target card. Good day I would say.

Thought about it aswell, basing my design concept on the Haunted House, like the way it opens up, and also want to retain a feature the set had. My idea is to make the garage first floor, along with kitchen and washroom combo. All a general idea and glad someone else is doing the same. Want to PM pics of it each other when we're done?

Hello all. I have been investing in lego, and buying lego for myself...for just over a year now, and find it hugely enjoyable! I love the modular buildings, like many others on this site, and have made a point of buying at least 3 of each (1 each of which i keep to build myself). However, seeing how well the fire brigade is doing, despite alot of negativity, I am now way more inclined to start picking up a few more of each modular, especially with the double VIP points still going for another week or so. My question is, what modular buildings do people think will be retiring this year, other than Grand Emporium? I am classing the Haunted House as a modular for this topic! Palace Cinema has not been out long, and obviously the Parisian Restaurant only came out this year, but the Town Hall and Pet Shop have been around for years now....and the Haunted House must surely vanish soon too? Personally, the HH is my favourite Lego set ever. I have one built and 4 for investment already, and its a miracle those have not been built too! Apologies in advance if this topic has been discussed previously..

The more sets the better. For those that have stayed out of Minecraft because they don't understand it, the two creators of the program (Markus Persson and Jens Bergensten) were named by Time in their 100 most influential people in the world last year. Jump in now whenever the price is under $30, and you won't be disappointed. Anyone know when minfig sized sets are due out? Lego keeps showing us samples, but I haven't heard of a release date.

I always got the same look when I would tell people how much I invested in Magic the Gathering over the years. People are like 'why would you spend so much for a piece of cardboard?' Simple really, there's a market for it and as it gets older and harder to find the more expensive it becomes. Same thing with my watches. This particular brand that I love, made a special turquoise dial of which only 50 were ever produced. I got in on the action because I knew it would be special. There were tons of people that were like, 'nah, turquoise?? who would buy that color?' Then when it was released and real pictures showed up online, most everyone was kicking themselves for not getting it. The price for it at the time was $1790 for the watch, and I have yet to see it show up for sale for less than $3000+. Lucky for me I got watch #1 woo. Anyways, for those that make a living, hopefully not too many people get into the buisness. But if they do, I guess just adapt?

Totally agree, which is why I also added the (admittedly churlish) part about my sales and procurement going so well despite the website ban. I just wanted them to know that they are not stopping or even slowing my game. As far as previous posts speculating about the reason for all this, my theory is the following: Lego wants to have as much control as possible over resellers because they are selling an item with a low inherent value. Lego items have a high value because of name and design. Without name and design they are simply pieces of nearly worthless plastic. This is similar to Coach handbags, another company which tries to stop resellers (they go even further than Lego in their zeal to stop resellers) because they also know that their items have low inherent value. They are selling fabric bags worth around $5 in actual money. They become $500 because of the Coach name and design. The diamond cartels also engage in similar practices of strict control because diamonds are not actually scarce, contrary to public opinion. The diamond market is artificially created. Go try to sell a used diamond and you will find out really quickly what the inherent value of a diamond is. In fact, most diamond dealers have a strict policy of not buying used diamonds. I could go on and on but I think you get the idea. The bottom line is this: if you are selling an item with a low inherent value you need to tightly control the flow (sale) that item. If the market gets flooded with items like this the price will drop precipitously and the whole house of cards will collapse. Lego knows this. Coach knows this. The diamond cartels know this. I don't think it's much more complicated than this.
