First tip, Don't expect to buy and immediately sell for a profit. You'll need to buy, hold, (BE PATIENT), then sell. The usual progression is: 1) TRY to buy near the end of an item's lifespan. This requires research, and nobody truly knows when an item will retire, its an art not a science. Typically 2 year lifespan for products, but it differs GREATLY from set to set, 2) TRY to buy on discount. (30-50%) Never pay Full Retail unless you already see the product has retired and is actively bringing big profits. 3) Decide what your needed profit margin is, and stick to it. Don't get greedy hoping for an item to continue to rise. Sometimes they plateau, sometimes they come crashing back to earth due to a re-release (Architecture studio, and Minecraft are examples) 4) Sell on ebay with great pictures, buy it now / best offer, don't accept returns (scammers abound), and try to stockpile shipping material AHEAD of time so you're not scrambling when something does sell. - Just my opins, many may differ. Finally, welcome! There's plenty of discount lego sets to go around (unless you're talking Amazon Warehouse deals). Hope you get to contribute a few tips along the way.4 points

I don't really think manufacturing in China is the great threat some of you make it out to be. The magic in Lego, the je ne c'est qoui, is not only in quality of brick, but also in the licensing, the packaging, the composition and thought that goes into making these sets. The builders putting these sets together are head and shoulders above and beyond their competition. You can't fake creativity, and/or imagination. As long as Lego continues to have the foresight to buy the right licenses and find the right people to put these wonderful creations together their competition can only copy. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Pile of Coach handbags and leather goods knocked off every year in China, yet Coach continues to post good numbers and continued growth. Lego is no different.2 points

I agree about the quality when detailed written steps and processes are available for factory workers to follow. Look at Apple and all the electronics we buy. What this really means is less jobs for currently and future non-China based Lego workers. It also could mean more classified leaks and knock-offs. Lego needs to stay cost competitive. Unfort, it comes with what we (and many others) would consider downsides. Sent from an iPhone using the Brickpicker app1 point

It's high time eBay stepped up on combatting counterfeit goods. They're quick to nail sellers with increased fees and taxing us on postage costs though. Sent from my iPhone using Brickpicker1 point

I did report one of the sellers on ebay selling fake minifigs. In their listing it said "LEGO like" building blocks but it's obviously a copy. We'll see what happens.1 point

Surely lego will be ok with a slow of growth. A slow in growth means that the idea of a bubble and the effects of a boom type effect would be negated. I said it before that Lego would rather 20 years of gradual slow growth than 2 years of boom growth, leading to an eventual bust. Also it is impossible to sustain a high level of growth like Lego has. It has been obvious sometime down the line they would grow, but at a slower rate. The marginal revenue will grow at a slower rate each year, but that is not necessarily a bad thing at all.1 point

Ah cool. I didn't know that. Alright, one last off-topic post before getting back 'on track'. Haha. Here are a couple of remixes I found of the theme tune. I enjoy remixes that can be different but without losing the feeling of the original. I'm not much for ones that go in a completely different way and there is next to nothing of the source in there to be heard. I agree with donotinsertintomouth. Before you know it, you will be buying the sets back for more than you sold them. It happens all the time. Avoid this mistake, and if in 1-3 years you still want to sell them, go ahead, but give it a TON of thought.1 point

You should have shipped the set he paid for and offered a cancellation on the second as it seems it was most likely an error purchasing 2.You could of cancelled even if he didnt respond after 7 days and you would have fulfilled your obligations by sending him what he paid for. It happens often a buyer may buy something twice "not knowing the fist time if it worked" Its your call what to do now and what feels right with you.1 point

I think it might be about the sets that were introduce in 2012 vs 2013. 2012 had Superheroes, Lord of the Rings, Monster Fighters, and Friends to give them the bump. 2013 had Legend of Chima replacing Ninjago...1 point

Ooh, I remember that rumor. The guy pretty much posted a list on eurobricks then bailed lol1 point

They have always released new sets in this manner. They don't need new sets to encourage sales in December, you need new products to encourage purchasing when people aren't already looking to buy. Also, I think too much weight is being put into the no discounting exclusives policy. Sure, people may not be buying as many exclusives, but they're still spending the money, just on different stuff. If someone has a $2,000 budget, they probably didn't stop buying sets because they can't buy exclusives, they just put that same money into other stuff they could get at a discount. Either way, most people weren't buying their exclusives from TLG directly since Amazon usually had bigger discounts on them.1 point

Hi guys, I happen to be an economist. The numbers I posted above are directly from The Lego Group Annual Report which can be found on their website in the About Us section. In 2012 sales for the first 6 months were 9.1 bil dkk, and 23.4 bil dkk for the year, meaning the first half of the year accounts for roughly 40% of the total. Fast forward to 2013, first 6 months sales were 10.4 bil dkk. Assuming this will be 40% of annual revenue, this would result in annual sales of 26 bil dkk, meaning sales growth will slow from 25% in 2012 to roughly 10% in 2013.1 point

This to me is a typical media article. The title of the article makes it sound like sales are down. As noted when looking at the numbers growth has only slowed but as others have said it is still growing. The market is never happen unless growth is greater than the previous year. It sounds like the business is still very sound and still growing albeit at a slower pace. Technically sales havent slowed down, growth has. Those are 2 very different things.1 point

Very interesting for the long term prospects of Lego investing. As for the short term, I'll go on record as saying that they'll see the fastest growth in their history in 2014 thanks to the movie. It's phenomenally successful (and good!), will create millions of AFOLs who want the sets for themselves *and* to share with their kids, has established an in-house line of likable characters and models, and it inspires strong brand loyalty due to its very specific style and personality. Plus, blockbuster movies have powerful influence overseas. Hollywood doesn't even make movies for North American audiences anymore--they make them for the international sales and merchandising. Special effects and action movies are particularly popular with foreign audiences, so even if US sales continue to slow (which I doubt), international sales are going to boom. I guarantee Lego is in the process of making it easier for other countries to get sets at reasonable prices. All of this will add up to huge 2014 sales. If their product quality doesn't drop, and if they continue to produce exceptional movies, TLG could be as monstrous as Disney when it comes to entertainment and merchandising tie-ins. We'll have to hope that the sequel is just as good. Source: I work in Hollywood.1 point

Also, I'm not sure Lego's buying limits have had that much effect. Have any of the people here cut back the purchasing because of Lego's limits? I doubt it, I'm sure they just find other avenues to make their purchases.1 point

It's important to note that GROWTH has slowed, but sales are still INCREASING. At least according to the article posted above, it looks like LEGO sold more sets last year (even if only 1% more) than the year before, so it's not like LEGO is going to be hurting (unless they way overshot their production/expansion in anticipation of continued growth). That being said, this is obviously an indicator of a possible bubble that some believe is coming. I've said a few times before, there is no way LEGO (or any company) could maintain 30%-40% growth annually. Eventually, any company would see that growth slow, or they'd be able to basically buy the world. On the plus side, I do believe the movie is going to help their sales a lot, at least in the short run, which should help their growth this year.1 point

"Lego has said that U.S. and European toy markets are being pressured by the flood of new competition." I guess they don't want to mention buying restrictions and reductions in discounts....1 point

Okay, just unpacked everything. Educated myself online about the contents. Looks like everything is there, sealed in the bags: 28 bags, 5 water plates, 8 road plates, and one sealed set of instructions. I believe I'm going to hold onto this one. Just looking over recent eBay sales, I picked this up for about the same as others have sold for. Used ones are only a few dollars less. This is going into the long term investment pile anyway. I'm sure I'll make something on this. Even if I open it up, put it together, and sell it used, and lose $25 on the sale, it'll still give me more than $25 worth of enjoyment putting it together. Bottom line, I think this is a win.1 point
