Now that these publications are gone (with several hundred dollars of my $$$) would trading PDF's be viable or frowned upon? Never got the Skaerbaek special issue due to website registration issue... Along with Issue 18+...

Well, a publication shutting down does not remove or revoke the copyright, which usually lasts decades, so making and distributing copies would technically violate copyright law. However, I’d say the most anyone would do to you for scanning PDFs, is send a strongly worded cease and desist letter, if they found out or cared.

Would copyright not transfer to the various creditors in the event of bankruptcy?  Not sure unpaid printers, designers, etc... would have much interest in legal expense for such an endeavor...

Whether the copyright still exists and whether or not you are likely to get sued are two different questions. Someone will still hold the IP rights.
