It just amazes me that some people are willing to work so hard for $5-10 when it should be clear there is money being left on the table. 2 Quote
JDLego324 Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 (edited) I have walked away from these in Lego Stores in recent weeks. Bought one for my daughter, and that's it. Like the Exosuit, they are back, and they will be easier and easier to find once resellers realize that the flip game for this one is over. Just my opinion, of course. Just my opinion, of course. I wouldn't walk away from RIs just yet... With the new Ideas review just announced and another due in January, I personally think that the Delorean, Ecto 1 and RI are just about done. Seems to me they always intended to make more Exos than RIs. Quote

I hope you know the above offer was just a joke... I'm normally not a buy-to-flip "investor" aside from occasionally buying on Kijiji and reselling locally or on eBay for a higher value. I did that with 12lbs of Bionicle... bought it for $25 in August, sold it for $125 locally a couple days ago. BUT my take on these RIs is that 2.5x to 3x initial cost is a good enough return over 2-3 months to unload a bunch and move on. I've sold 10 so far, plan on unloading 7 more and keeping what I've got left (my little secret) for the future. Oh and I have 1 for us which is the only Ideas/Cuuso set we cracked open and built to date. I'm in the same boat. My pile is paid for but I'd like to unload 1 or 2 more to be a little more in the black. I have one set aside for us too. This set is quite limited so even if more are on the way, I think the demand will always out weigh the supply. And I'm referring more to the completist here who will be paying top $$$. Quote

I believe you are right that they did not intend to make as many RIs as Exos, but then the media backlash occurred, and Lego had to reevaluate. Subsequently, as a result of the negative press, they have obviously cranked more of these out. Quote

Val-E Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I hate it when people inflate their shipping costs and then the auctioned item sells at a low Price as it distorts the statistics. I wish they charged a flat rate commission maybe 7% on both concepts like in other countries. Quote

Val-E Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 (edited) Shill bidding also grinds my gears and over here 99.9% are shill bidders who seem to use the queen Edited November 12, 2014 by valenciaeric Quote

oneknightr Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 We went to Disneyland over the weekend. We arrived on Thursday and I picked up two Research Institutes at the Lego store in downtown Disney. It was a limit of one per household but I bought one and had my wife buy another. There were about 12 on the shelves when I bought them. I walked by after dinner and saw about five left. The next day they were all gone. Seal codes were 38r4. Quote

marcandre Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 My lego store (Raleigh) gets a few every week. They had one behind the counter yesterday. Quote
tractorboy Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 Yeah, I saw that earlier. It doesn't really say anything about a new run. "We're investigating if we can make more". In other words...we don't think making more is really worth it right now. Of course they can make more if they wanted to. I don't think they feel it's worth it at this stage, especially with 2 new Ideas sets coming up soon. Looks to me like they've just shuffled some stock around to get some into B&M stores and keep a few customers happy and off their backs. I think the current demand for the RI is a false one, created by us hoovering them all up when it came out. I just don't see this coming back the way Exo has. At least until I see it back as 'available now' on LEGO Shop at Home. Quote
Val-E Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 As mentioned before, all mine are minty fresh week 43s - they are exclusive to one big chain of stores who are also carrying the other IDEAS (delorean, exo, ecto). I haven Quote
WCH Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 Think it's worth flipping them at the current price or just holding them for the long term? Quote
Val-E Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 Depends how many you have tied up and how much you want to flip for. If more than 5 I would flip half at at least double MSRP and hold the others. This one has a good price point for Xmas and has had a lot of publicity recently. In 3 years Quote
