I don't know what possessed this individual to pay this much for this classic set, but it sure will send the used values through the roof when the new data is applied to the Lego Set Guide.

I am pretty sure it was done on purpose to by someone who has quite a few UCS MFs and wants to see their price to go up even more.

It is a legit listing, but I'm curious to see if money exchanges hands and the deal is finalized. We don't get records of the actual monetary transactions, but until proven otherwise, I have to believe it went through.

I don't blame people if they are skeptical. Maybe it's some kind of new scam. I don't know. It is a sold listing and to keep our data legit, we use will it. The one question that comes to mind is whether or not set 10179 is that difficult to find in the UK? Who knows. It is amazing if it's true though.

It would be easy to tell your friend to buy your MF for 5000 if you provide him with that money, and no one could say it was just a means to make the MF value rise. And if I could get more paranoid, we could see the "fellowship" of MF owners to start doing the same trick all together.

One problem with your idea is that you have to pay Ebay fees on the sale. That's almost $500 US dollars. I think it was two idiots bidding it up.

On a serious note, the 10179 appreciated over 50% last year and 5% last month alone. I don't know when the prices will stop to increase, but in another year, it could be at $3000-$4000.

So I was just at LEGO store picking up my 10225 ( super stoked )! I was talking with one of the employees who was suprisingly knowledgeable about all the LEGO themes. We ending up discussing the 10179, who wouldn't right? He told me this crazy almost unbelievable story. Apparently shortly before it hit EOL there was an error on the lego.com website and when you added it to the cart, the price was 179.00! Not only that but there was supposed to be a limit of 2. It let you add as many as your heart desired! Needless to say the set sold out within hours. Did anyone experience this personally? I sure wish I had a Delorean, or a flux capacitor for my SUV, if I did I sure know what I would use it for!!

I have never heard of this, and not that that means it couldn't have happened, but I highly doubt it. They had a mistake with the pricing on 10179 for Canadians one time when they did their annual Star Wars special days and I would have to think they learned from that mistake and wouldn't let it happen again. Either that or it was purposely lowered to move out the remaining inventory, if it ever actually had that price. Edited to add: LEGO store employees and guests often tell nonsenical stories with facts and figures that are highly inaccurate.

I am no expert but I think that there is no reason for the huge 400.00 sets (death star and SSD) not seeing huge returns in 3-5 years. I know the MF was 100 bucks more msrp but still. Any thoughts? Also I dont think the SSD will be around as long as the DS. Not sure that sales are so hot

I don't think we will ever see a set go as high at 10179. There are just way to many investors now than there were when 10179 was out. The Death Star has been out for 4 years! I just don't see any way of it hitting 10179 prices.

The current line of STAR WARS sets will not see numbers anywhere close to the 10179. There are just too many 10188s in existence for that to happen. The Super Star Destroyer is a wonderful set, but it is no 10179 Millennium Falcon. Investors are going to have to grind out profits. There are no magical money makers like the 10179, but that being said, there are plenty of quality LEGO sets that will appreciate well, if bought at the right price.

Very true I feel, and unfortunately when you figure in the sales tax on top of the $400 msrp and the cost its going to be to sell on amazon or ebay, or wherever you may sell it, the Death Star or SSD is going to have to be selling for at least $500 or so in order for us investors just to break even. So until it gets up around the $550-600 price range its going to be hard to make a buck on these $400 msrp sets. Am I crazy for thinking this, what do you guys think? This makes the TRU 10% off the DS and SSD look good right now IMO.

I think you guys are looking at the 10179 all wrong. You see $2k and think, wow, that's a lot of money. Of course it is, but it's only an increase of 443%. There were plenty of sets that were available during that time that have done the same or at least similar in terms of percentage gain - 5378 Hogwarts - 408%, 7787 Bat-Tank - 399%, 10181 Eiffel Tower 445%, 3828 Air Temple 545%, 6210 Sail Barge 500%. You could've bought $500 worth of any number of sets during that time and you would've seen the same results, just not a singular set worth $2k, but getting that number from one set isn't the important part. Of course, at that same time you could've purchased a few Market Streets and Cafe Corners and seen 1138% and 797% gains, respectively. The original Batcave and Arkham Asylum were also sitting around.

The point is that there are several sets available today at regular retail prices that will show increases of 300-400% in 2 to 3 years. Sure, you probably won't make $1,500 profit from one large set purchase, but properly choosing sets with that same $500 investment will still get you to the same place, even with the increased number of speculators today.

You have to buy at the right price. Every Lego set gets discounted at some point. Buy at the right price and making a profit becomes that much easier.

Hi all - I'm new to this lego investment business so apologies if this is a common thread topic here. I did a quick search and didn't find anything about it though. Are discontinued sets that have already appreciated lots a viable investment, or just chucking money away? There are two retired sets that I really like (10030 - imperial star destroyer, and 10179 - MF), but they are silly money. I wouldn't buy them with the aim of making a massive profit, but I'd want to be able to turn around and sell them easily for the price I paid (plus inflation) for them a few years down the line. From my inexperienced position, I'd say that both sets have peaked and now would not be a good time to buy either (as the only way for either of them is down). Is this naive of me?

People are expecting a new 10179 to be released because of the new SW movies, so I think people are starting to think twice before buying this now.
