  • Top 25 Most Valuable LEGO Sets 2016

    Jeff Mack

Yesterday I was contacted by the website Tech Insider to help them list the Top 25 most valuable sets of All Time. It was good timing too since I did run the price guide numbers recently. With no real big surprise, Star Wars led the pack with getting 10 sets into the list.  I think the one surprise is getting a set from 2015 in there with the Bat-Pod.  No one is really sure how long that will remain in the list and if aftermarket builders will do a good enough job on the "fakes" to kill that market.  Good old Mr Gold is still going strong after a few years and holding onto a value greater than $1,500.

If you are lucky enough to have every set on this list, you are holding onto a pretty nice bundle of cash, $35,277.95! So the big question is, how many sets on this list do you own?

Exactly, below SSD there are a number of sets that are not going to grow as much as stuff like DS, TH, R2 or HH will over the coming year. I´d love to see a poll of how many sets people have on the list.

I sold five of the top six sets within the last three years. I was happy making at least 2X my investment but damn, if I had only held on until now.

This list and that quote is really making me second guess my decision to sell another SSD.

Ed, You should redo this list every year.
Lets see when the DS R2D2 TH HH will make the appearance.

But if newer sets enter the Top 25, it also means current sets that are now in the list will have to drop out of it. Which sets would that be then?

Great work. Can you add a PPP column? Obviously Mr. Gold would be number one and I would think MBS two (oh forgot about the batpod) but more interested to see how far down 10179 and 10189 drop.   Also it would be interesting to see these values plugged into the ROI formula @inversion posted yesterday.

Anyone a member of the "AFOLs of Facebook" group? It's rather hilarious to read the backlash (and indignant disbelief)

What's their beef? Angry they can't purchase these for lower prices despite the simple laws of supply and demand in effect?

Same beef as the disbelievers on /r/lego.  Every one of those sets should be MSRP always, and always in production.

Of all time as it says, or since the year 2000? This list is missing Monorail Transport Base (6991), Airport Shuttle (6399), and UNICEF Van (106). I'm fairly confident there's more. A Galaxy Explorer (928) set, new in the box, sold for over $1,800 on Bricklink in the last six months.  Even since 2000, Cloud City (10123) should be included.  But it's listed on Brickpicker for less than $150 new.  There are a lot of issues with the price guide.  UNICEF Van shows it's worth less than $30.  Tatooine mini build (CELEB2015) shows more than a couple hundred, but I can buy it now for less than half.  Extension Cable (8886) is showing seven bucks new, but twenty used.  It also shows $60 when I look at the chart "Set Value Change from Previous Month" (actually, that chart is completely out of whack for any item it seems).  Minifigure accessory packs 850449 and 850486 show a value of zero, as well as the three tins from Star Wars Celebration and Comic Con (Mini Slave 1, Luke Skywalker's Landspeeder, and Sith Infiltrator).  Additionally, the list has Mr. Gold on it.  What about all the exclusive Comic Con minifugures?  Aren't those worth enough to be included?

I own 8 on the list (only 1 one those is new).  ...and it challenging alone getting those 8 since I started collecting in late 2012.

MF, TM, ET, CG, RBR, MBS, SSD and HT.

note: I'm hoping 10123 Cloud City rejoins the list as the new price is around $900 / $1,000.
